First off I have to say if you don't have the OB I would highly recommend it, its only 10 dollars for five of the highest rated games of all time.

Secondly, how and why do you think valve does it? This price is so ridiculously low, if I bought a game off of ebay, I'd pay half of it just for shipping, not to mention I'm getting five games.

Edit: This is off of steam for those of you who don't know, http://store.steampowered.com/sub/469/

Edit2: What happens when you play HL 2 HL 2:1 and HL 2:2? You're going to want to play HL 2:3. Combine that with http://whatsinthebox.nl/ and there is the perfect storm. I can only hope

Because with games profits go up as price goes down; Valve's sales data backs this up. There was an article summarizing a speech made by their president at a convention featured in the News Room awhile back, you might wanna dig it up and read it.

And I just bought Portal for $20 two weeks ago... *facepalm*
Edit: Would I have to pay to activate the games on steam as well? I don't really trust steam...

Only £5?

You know what, I'll buy this. They immense love for this game is overwhelming, and I've come to trust the public's opinion after the greatness of COD 4 and BioShock. With a pricetag as low as that, I'm definately buying this.

On a sidenote... where is this magical game being sold for £5?

No, once you got the magical box then enter the activation codes and you're off!

It'a bloody good deal.

You dont need to pay to activate the games. Just buy the game you want from Steam, download it and play it.

Edit:Sorry for the double quoting...

DAMN! Should have figured but I have bad feelings toward steam ever since I bought a copy of CS:S from a store only to find out I had to pay a further "Activation fee"...

I have TF2 and Half Life 2 (minus the episodes) on PC and the Orange box itself on 360. Is it worth getting again just for ep 1, 2 and portal for PC?

Valve do it because it increases the interest on Steam, the traffic on their servers and the sales of the title.

As their distribution costs are lower than physical stores they can afford to take the hit on their profit margin. It's also a lot easier for Valve to do this kind of thing as they control Steam directly and they own the best selling titles on it.
Even when they do deals for other developer's games it's easier as once they've (the other publisher/developer) agreed on the price cut and when it should hapen all Valve have to do is run an ad and push a button.

Getting store retailers to do it would be much more difficult, assuming you could get them to lower the prices on their stock (which they would have already paid for) at all.

Exactly. And while I never thought I'd find myself saying this about any group in any industry...Valve really are the good guys of the gaming industry if you think about it...

Over 10 EUR? Hmm. Even though it's ripping off EU customers (5 pounds compared to 10 EUR? come on...), I might buy it.
