I played Op force before half life ( i was fully clued up on background) and found the friendly marines so much more comforting and fun. Fighting though Black ops still puts 50% of shooters AI today to shame.

Maybe.

Shephard should do a comeback!

the pacing to opposing forces was alot better than Half Life, but the level design for Half life is superior, it makes more sense.... come on people?, while playing playing Half Life did you ever question why you was in that particular place?, be honest! it just seamed so well.
I did ask myself some stuff, like "why there's so big sewers everywhere?" "what's up with all these almost-bottomless pits?*" and "how the hell did they get those containers through that door?"

* What about using grues instead?

The one thing I remember and miss the most from Opposing Force... is that extremely awesome (and cute, mind you) living weapon, that resembles a fish... something, that he pats when idle and feeds to reload...
It's an infant Shocktrooper.

I bought the Half-Life series last weekend and spend the last week playing Half-Life 1 and both expansions, and I thought Opposing Force was the best of the three. The arsenal was bigger and better, the length was just right for the story (Half-Life 1 dragged out for too long for such a simple story), no crummy and lame extended trips to Zen, the combat knife was better then the crowbar, nightvision goggles were better then the flashlight, better end-game boss, less "side-quests", etc. I could go on, but i'm not exactly trying to write an essay. I did not enjoy the crappy rope segments, or the return to loner gameplay (I expected more marines to assist you), but the major reason I prefered it was because it leaned more toward shooter then action adventure. I do not think the Half-Life series pulls off FPS adventure gameplay well. Metroid is superior in that area. Although OF did have adventure elements, they were not as heavy as the original.

you speak with a forked tongue, clearly.

and you totally get eating by grues, its dark down in the bottomless pit, so yeah grues eat you just before you hit the floor of the bottomless pit.

Totally agreed, I loved Opposing Force. Hopefully, there will be a set of episodes dedicated to A. Shephard :)

I'm a big OF fan, but I still think Half Life is better. Opposing Force does get points because the Xen visit is very short and bearable, the levels are fun, the gameplay is tighter and it's interesting to see things from a different perspective. I'm also waiting to see just how they are going to tie up shepherds story.

However, my (few) gripes with the game are the fact that the new aliens don't fit into the rest of the series at all(unlike the Xen aliens that are in HL2) and I felt the way the game deprived shepherd of his weapons and kept him out of most of the original game was cheap. I would have preferred to actually see the military invasion of black mesa, not to mention the first encounters with the marines gunning down scientists(and allowing you to choose whether to not to do the same). That and let at least allow you to keep your weapons, rather then having to start with the crowbar(er, pipe wrench) again. Have the rest of the marines you are with get ambushed or something if they really want to isolate the player. As for a machine gun and ammo, well, that can be mitigated by not having any replacement ammo available until later.

I loved Opposing Force, it was nearly as good as the original. It was a great twist on the story and had better action in some places. I'm still hoping Adrian Shephard will return to the Half-Life world. The G-Man still has him in stasis.
Whoah. Big idea.

Valve said that they want to keep going with the franchise. Perhaps once Freeman's arc is done, we can take a look at what thankless job Adrian is set too? Hell, set it so that it happens at the same time as Freeman's adventure, so we can take a good look at the shit Gordon set in motion.
That's what I love about the whole HL world.
There are so many directions they can take this in, not just Freeman.
I preferred the original HL but I cannot deny the brilliance that is Opposing Force.. in fact, I think I might just go and play it now.

I'm pretty sure Valve said that Opposing Force and Blue Shift were not canon, hence the lack of Race X in Half Life 2. Plus Shepherd does speak, or characters seem to understand that he does 'What's your name?... Cpl. Shepherd, huh?'

Haha, it makes me laugh that the 'advanced' training course is just moving and shooting.

I did always (and over the holidays in a very happy rejoining) play Op For multiplayer, just because it was the same thing, but with more weapons. And Gasworks was a great map, I loved it.

If that is true then why have Barney in the game?

Are there any references to Blue Shift though? And Barney's first non CP line is 'about that beer I owed ya!', and a security guard says this to Gordon, and it is not the security guard banging on the door that is the Barney of Blue Shift. And the whole Race X issue - I though that they were replaced with the Combine in 2.

Google will help us here.

Hmmm. I'm sure I read somewhere that they are non-canonical, but apparently Valve have never said so, so an Internet to you, sir.

I thought that was because is name was printed on his powervest and uniform.
This, too, makes sense.

Not as good I would say. I just want valve to fucking fix the crash so I can finish it...
Which Crash?
The one when Freeman runs through the Portal?

Anyways, the old CD version is amazing, not sure about best but certainly my favourite of the HL1 games. Mostly because it has the best guns and enemies, can anything top the Squid Bazooka? The M249 that makes you move backwards when firing, that's cool too.
It's main flaw is that it's so short, which could be a good thing from a certain point of view.

I want to play Opposing Force again... I never played it through. T_T
I stopped at the place where... you have to go through a large dark tunnel, and there's two-three huge monsters in there, that used lightning, I think, and had a shitload of hp, and I had little ammo left <.<;
That's the exact same place I got to as well. It was so hard.

Opposing Force was cool, but I like Half-Life better. There were parts of it that made it just feel like a half-baked mod or something, like "Oh yeah, and there are these other horrific aliens invading! Yeah!"

The weapons really made it and the game even had some nice squad combat sections with other Marines. The AI was pretty impressive.
The Ai is great - On my last play though i had 2 marines, a medic and a engineer following me and it was the rails section with all the black ops, Me and the marines stormed right in, everybody was throwing grednades then the marine with the light machine gun opened up. A mintue later he stopped firing and the last black op fell to his kness and collapsed to the floor. I had to rub my eyes to check if i wasnt dreaming, it was one of the best fire fights ive ever had in a FPS. I found the other marine (who had a shotgun)who was heavily injured but had 3 more Black ops on the floor around him. I normally kill the marine with the machine gun so i can steal it, but i couldnt do it this time.
