HAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.

I'm not touching Origin with a fucking 10 mile long barge pole, why would I want a more restrictive, memory intensive version of Steam? Why would I encourage EA's bullshit of making titles Origin exclusive?
Herp derp let's ignore the largest digital distribution market around.

Brilliant guys, you really think many gamers will give up Steam just because you have BF3/ME3? We gamers are a fickle bunch and EA has proven that they'll dick their customers time and time again just because they can, I doubt you'll find many people porting over from a distribution channel they have hundreds of games on just to use EA's shitty service.

I do not know what EA are thinking here, sure, releasing Origin to compete with Steam is sound on paper, but in practice you potentially deny millions of sales to yourself just because we don't want change. It's practically corporate suicide!

I've heard rumours that EA will pull all games (including BF) from Steam once Origin goes full power. I doubt it and certainly hope not, I don't want to have to be locked in to another service just to play BF3.

But I will always stick with Steam, it's a great service, they've had years of experience in the business and haven't really put a foot wrong (with me) during my time with them. Plus when they have a sale, they seriously have a sale.

Just to calrify, I do agree with you point, no objections here, and if it wasen't for the fact I don't want to argue with my friend because he is, in short, an arrogant idiot, I would try to force it into his hit that Origin will fail and go down burning.

On the other hand, he does have a slight valid point, not one I agree with, but a point nontheless, he's reason for changeing serice is that he is dissatisfied with Steam, Not 100% clear what the specifics are, but among them are that for a patch to come out on steam compared to the retail version of the game, useually take 1-2 days, and the specific game he was playing (witcher 2) it took a week or more for them to do so, I'm sure he has other reasons, but that is the newest I've heard of.

I do not, however, share this opinion, I know why they have to do the ekstra work, so does he for that matter, we both study computer science, so it's not something alien we can't understand, but where he sees it as a nuances, I see it as a priviliage that Steam even wants to go around reworking at time, entire games to build in their API to make it work, it is like an ekstra Q&A.

But I'm sticking with steam, no contest.

That is exactly as I understood it, but as I said, I misread it at first, But yeah, thats my opinion in a nutshell.

They did do wrong, but in the end, it always came out positive, the worst was my pre-order for H.A.W.X. beeing delayed 2 weeks or so after retail release for no reason they wanted to tell me, only to give me a refund, and then the next day, it was up... balls...

another very firmly believe he will use Origin for his online games, and disgard Steam (even though he has 150+ games there)
I'll take his steam account if he doesn't want it! :p

OT: Nah, I doubt Origin will really break into the market too well.

Indeed. From my glancing at news, I don't think EA will physically stop BF3 from going on Steam (stupid move to deny the most popular PC gaming distribution platform) but Origin will house exclusive in game content not available anywhere else. From what I've seen, it will be a few new weapons (including one specifically for campers, wtf?) etc etc.

But EA know enough about money grabbing that stopping Steam from having BF3 is ridiculous, I don't think they're THAT stupid to do it. But time will tell.

Digital distribution is dodgy business at the best of times, put EA at the helm and you are just asking for a shitstorm, they have already proven numerous times they got no problem banning people from their games if they don't like someone on the forums.

But people wont learn until they burn, so flames on!

Ha! Give money to EA? Willingly?

No way.

Hell, I would buy retail just to keep as much of my money as possible away from EA.

Besides, Origin's Australian prices are bloody ridiculous. I checked them for Alice: Madness Returns. $80AUD. it's cheaper to import the damn thing via Amazon. Oh, and the Origin US price for the same game? $45.

Yeah...

Fuck you, EA.
Fuck that noise, the Aussie Dollar buys 1.06 US dollars too. Yeah if I want Crysis 2 or any other EA game I'll be buying it in a couple of years in a discount bin. If they do 75% off sales maybe they might get a little custom from me, but gouging prices like that? Fuck it, I get World of Tanks for free.

They have, as far as I know, all EA titles has been pulled from the store, the games you already own are still oyur on steam, but Steam isn't allowed to sell any more EA games there.
A quick search on Steam reveals that The Sims 3, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect are all still there.

That being said, EA has always been stingy with pre-order bonuses when it comes to Steam. I don't believe for a moment that Steam making DA2 available for pre-order the day after the free upgrade to the Signature Edition offer ended was any coincidence. So when it comes to major EA titles, I'll probably use Origin. Also, Origin has the FIFA series, which Steam never bothered to acquire for whatever reason. So I'll certainly be getting FIFA 12 there.

Widespread use of Origin will depend on whether EA has something to offer. Pre-order bonuses will only get them so far. For games that I don't pre-order, it will likely come down to price. EA loved doing "Buy two or more, get everything half off" sales with the EA Download Manager, which was the precursor to Origin. If they keep that up, I can see buying quite a few things through Origin. Nothing like getting a brand new game for 50% off just by spending $2.50 for that Mass Effect DLC pack I never bothered to get, right?
Exactly. Or better yet, looking at their publisher catalog: http://store.steampowered.com/publisher/Electronic%20Arts reveals that there are actually a whole bunchload of games still available.

I agree with the DA2, it was most certainly not a coincidence. I still think it was quite silly and still haven't bought DA2(not entirely because of that, I'm waiting for it to go down in price as well).

The move make TOR available only on Origin, when it comes to digital download is certainly an aggresive one, to promote Origin. From my point of view, while I can understand why it's done, doesn't seem like a good one. Rather than getting Origin up and running, I think it'll make TOR less popular, that it potentially could've been. I'm still going to try it out, but again, it just seems plain silly to limit your sale of such a multi-million dollar game.
this is true, if anything they should've just had some exclusive small content of an add on if you bought it from origin, say like a few free start up items at the beginning or maybe a small extra quest for some easy XP at the beginning.

What is you toughts? does Origin stand a chance? or does it just fill a niece in the Digital distribution market?
I'm pretty sure filling a niece is pretty illegal in many countries. =p

That said, I'm probably sticking to Steam, it's a well established service, and well, I'm not big enough of an EA fanboy to justify having both Steam and Origin running in the background. Now if they make Mass Effect 3 or The Old Republic Origin exclusive... well... I'll just get a hard copy then.

I am not god/amazing at economics, but it doesn't always depend on the overall "worth" of your dollar/currency

http://www.ehow.com/info_7746957_average-annual-salary-america.html

average australian yearly income -----> 66,976
average american yearly income -------> 43,460

you have much more money in circulation, and due to imports and exports along with covering a certain percentage it is near dead on with those earnings that you pay 70-80 while we pay 50-60 usually

now am i saying its fair/correct/equal?

No, but i'm just saying it's not as simple as "our dollar is worth more than your dollar!!...mann...!"

I'm never using Origin. I've heard the horror stories about people getting their EA games locked if they say something bad about them on the official forums; I'd prefer not to give EA even more power over my games.

I have Several Games on both Origin and Steam. The Majority of games I own are on Steam mostly due to the sales. As Far as i'm away the games on Origin are only EA titles so the games library is pretty limited.

The only reason I have bought games from EAstore/Origin are when I can get a good deal. I like the 25% discount coupon on my Bday.

Origin is an Improvement over the Digital distribution software they had before, but it's not even in the same ballpark as Steam.

The only reason I like the Origin is from the economic point of view:

More competition, less Steam monopoly, better choices for us, customers.

I expect to see all EA's games back on Steam before the end of the year.
I'd hope so too, I hated using GFWL for bulletstorm and I don't want to have an online service pushed on to me by EA of all companies, I'll definitely be boycotting it until they return games to Steam.

I've always liked Valve, and I've been using Steam for years now, so it's proven itself to work just fine.

On the other hand, I have highly mixed feelings about Electronic Arts. Every so often they'll put out a game that I really enjoy, but then they'll release a sequel that feels like a completely soulless copy of the original. They've got a pretty good track record going of buying up series that I happen to enjoy, then putting out sequels that either have nothing to do with the originals, or even worse, take the stories of the originals and go completely bat-shit-insane stupid with them (like the Command & Conquer series). I've also had some pretty bad experiences with their customer service in the past, though I have no idea if they've cleaned up their act. I highly doubt it, given how EA treats its games, but that's hardly anything more than assumption. And of course, this isn't even taking into account that Origin is an unknown. It's new. It hasn't proven itself yet.

The only thing that would really get me to even consider jumping aboard with Origin (at this early point in its lifespan, anyway) would be if they offered System Shock and System Shock 2 with updated settings to accommodate for higher resolution widescreen monitors built into the games. That's about it. And even then, if that actually happens with Origin, I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen on Steam and/or Good Old Games soon after.

How dares EA to open a digital store and compete with Stream. The nerve on some people.
