Nope, they created some of the most original games way before their time.Metroid,Zelda,Mario, hell even Pikmin was original.
i know if you had read my comment i said they were very original now all the do is remake old games with motion controlls which is a fucking con.
not really, if you look at their new games they're full of original gameplay elements the only thing they really do recycle is the characters which I think is a good thing, Mario, Link etc all get a lot of hate for being constantly used but that's because they're the fucking mascots of the company! it also allows consumers to build up a greater love for the characters increasing loyalty to the brand, which works well considering most gamers grew up with Mario!. imagine what it would be like if the wii tennis game didn't contain them.

Meeeeh the only original game I can think of right now is Trackmania. I can guess it probably wasn't the first racing game to throw realism to the wind. But as far as I know, no other games attempted to make a game with such "zany" race courses. Combining puzzling and cars was a pretty cool idea as well, but bloody hard.

Well just like Music (nothing is original , its official, every possible assembles of notes have been used) most obvious game ideas have been used. The norm. is there for a reason - people like it. If games try to hard to be innovative (Mirrors Edge) they usually get slated for being too different (ironic).

i am just praying they make another good zelda game, but knowing them it will be a collection of shitty minigames or just another one rehashed with a mothion control scheme.

also whats a Gilgamesh that was the spelling suggestion for minigames.
Second.

There are alot of good games out there. Somehow none of them are original. Every original game i've seen has been either really bad, overlooked or unavailible to mass population. If this keeps up every game is going to be about a space marine saving the human race from evil aliens, because he's the only one who can. How lame is that? I want your opinions on this subject and IF YOU CAN, name a original game OTHER than Portal.
You forgot the overly done evil greedy cooperation who does not care who gets hurt, or the backstabbing person who uses you to do there dirty work game plots.

Who cares if its original if its a good game. i would take 100 great games that have pretty much been done before than 1 original game that has some new mechanic or art style. If a game is good, its good whether its original or not is irrelevant.

I'm not really sure if we are talking about original IP's or original gameplay. Regardless, I have found Left 4 Dead to be both innovative when it comes to co-op gaming, and extremely well executed. Another game I feel needs to be mentioned is Mount and Blade, which offers a truly amazing take on medieval combat, and what I consider to be the best modding community outside of Half-Life.

Gilgamesh is a recurring "character" in the Final Fantasy franchise.
Actually, originally, Gilgamesh was a legendary hero, like Beowulf. You know, there was an ancient Epic of Gilgamesh, same as there was an Epic of Beowulf.
Really sucks that the entire Epic of Gilgamesh is lost, and that we only have most of it. At least, we think we have most of it. The chunk that is missing might be inconsequential or not, we may never know. Which makes me pissed.

Well, I think the problem is really the same problem in the film industry. It's hard to be truly original because with the amount of ideas we pump out every year, we were bound to sort of, "run out" of good ideas.

Portal was not that original nor was it the best game ever created. It is a decent game though. The last original games were Silent Hill 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Bioshock. Dead Space is fun but not really original, more like a retelling of stuff that already came before it.
How are any of those original? they are all either sequels or spin-offs of the original games.

If you really think about it, in terms of genre there really isn't anything original anymore, what makes games original nowadays is how the game plays and how it tells the games story to the player.

Riviera: The Promised Land was awesome and somewhat original. While the story is as normal as the story could be, the gameplay really broke it out to something interesting. It was like playing one of those old MUDs but with vibrant colors.

Alas, it fell into obscurity. I can only hope that Knights in the Nightmare does better in June. Addictive Bullet Hell tactics.

I didn't read the entire thread, but can't help it just to comment and say:

Hence the reason I am replaying old school games I forgot about it. Currently Chronotrigger haha. <3

The Civ series is still original.

Mirrors Edge. (I know it's already mentioned, just that I ordered it today and am excited :D)

Black and white games are original (Although getting on a bit now, they still look BEAUTIFUL, look at number 2 and you will see what I mean, number one released in 2001 still blows me away.)

Assasins creed

Spore

Pyroblazer (basicly a new wipeout)

I disagree with this, there are plenty of creative minds out there bussling with ideas, one of the things thats great about humanity.

Originality is a very hard thing to come up with nowadays, almost everything has been done before. Not that being unoriginal is a bad thing necessarily, afterall most people use other idea's that they've been inspired by as springboards for their own.

Hence this does lead to repetition of major recurring themes or concepts as people see these concepts as being good and build their ideas around it but making something truly original is a very hard thing to do. It's when ideas start stagnating because no-one bothers to change them enough from each other as a) they're too lazy or b) they see the idea as too much of a money maker to radically change that a lack of originality becomes a stranglehold, but luckily we're not quite at that stage yet (we're getting close with FPS's though... so many of them their stories could be overlayed on top of each other and it would be hard to tell the difference.)
