I honestly don't have much of a horse in this race. Out of all the Oscar movies this year I've only watched Arrival, La La Land, Kubo, Zootopia, Fantastic Beasts, and Suicide Squad, Dr. Strange, Jungle Book, and Rogue One and out of all those I'd say the only really noteworthy one was Kubo and the Two Strings, but all those movies had some major problems.

Edit: And how the hell does La La Land even get nominated for costume design?

If there is any justice whatsoever in this world then Kubo will win visual effects. I didn't even like it that much, but it wins there, no question. Possibly animated movie too, although I suppose a case could be made for the Disney entries.

Star Trek Beyond should win makeup and hairstyling purely on the weight of that one chick. You know the one I mean. She looked cool.

Hell or High Water was alright I suppose. Arrival too. The central premise doesn't hold up for me but it was interesting all the same.

The rest I either haven't seen or have no strong opinion on.

Guess who won?

Suicide Squad! Now a fucking Oscar-winning picture.

That one really put my nuts through a salad shooter. How was that even up for consideration? Except for maybe Killer Croc there was nothing noteworthy in lines of makeup in that movie. The rest was all stuff that has been done at every single nerd convention for the past decade. Of all things to pick, they went with this fucking train wreck. Ugh

Jimmy Kimmel is never going to live that down. Someone with as much live experience as him should NEVER have screwed up that badly.

Edit: I know he wasn't the actual announcer who messed up, but someone handed Warren Beatty the wrong envelope, which fell under Jimmy Kimmel's purview as the host.

Basically, Warren Beatty was handed the envelope with the Best Actress winner rather than the Best Picture winner he was supposed to present. His co-presenter, Faye Dunaway, recognized the Best Actress winner (Emma Stone) as having won for La La Land, and so announced that the Best Picture winner was La La Land.

However, as was revealed by Jimmy Kimmel partway through the acceptance speech, the Best Picture winner was actually Moonlight, not La La Land.

I've only seen one Best Picture nominee, Arrival, which was fantastic. I thought about checking out La La Land, but then I read that it was a movie about Jazz, the objectively worst kind of music. Oh well.

Anyway, I wanted Deadpool to win Best Picture. Nobody really cares about the other categories.

Yeah, I only saw 2 of the best picture nominees in time. Arrival and Hacksaw Ridge were both pretty great. Maybe I'll go see Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight after hearing so much buzz about them.

Aaaaand fuck. Suicide Squad is now an Oscar winning picture. For a minor, insignificant Oscar but still. That sentence should never have been possible under any circumistances, on any planet, by any rules of metaphysics, in any reality. And Kubo got no love.

Still waiting for Hell or High Water to come out here.

And the award for best twist ending goes to: M. Night Shya....no, Warren Beatty! All this because they keep 2 sets of envelopes so that they can hand one to each host if necessary. So the crew of the show screwed up and handed Warren the spare best Actress envelope.

I feel bad for Warren - he's gonna get raked over the coals like Steve was.

I'm glad La La land didn't win. A more white picture couldn't have been made. all technicolorful, cheery, and 1950s flavor, like it was made from a collective to be an oscar contender.

I struggle to think of any other movie that's as obviously Oscar Bait as La La Land. I suppose there's nothing really wrong with that, but it will invariably be a divisive movie since a lot of people will be ticked off by some of the more obviously baity choices made in production.

From what I hear, Moonlight is pretty damn Oscar-baity too.

Oscar Bait movies are still better movies than most movies churrened out by the Blockbuster scene.

Appearently being the best possible is considered bad :p

Not bad, just not entertaining. I'll still get around to watching The Arrival tonight. Seems like it's in the same vein as Contact with Jodie Foster so I might enjoy it.
