Over balancing of items in games

I have found in some games that items are balanced way to much. It comes to mind most in COD4 were sniper rifles accuracies are changed based on the fact they are semi-auto or bolt action and shot guns are made to only shoot ten feet because they large power. This arbatray altering of items I feel has been taken way to far. This is not to say in games items need to have some balance because we do not want everyone using the same one powerful thing. I am wondering what other games you know of where the creators tossed out varity and specialization to make things more balanced

Definitly, good guns should be harder to get, or else harder to get ammo for. The only drawback of this is if the games had multiplayer. Then every gun could be accessed at once and nothing would be fair. Of course the invention of skill matching or whatever it's called solved that, but thats probably what does it for most games (COD4).

Surely overbalanced is imbalanced?

Anyway yes it can be a problem - MMO's are constantly trying to achieve balance while not over-nerfing anything important. If done well though, much fun is had. Example: TF2's entire set.

haha me too!

I'm sorry but I can't agree.

Ever play Rainbow6 Las Vegas?

A pistol wielding man repelled behind a window holding down entire teams is not fun. The Automatic shotgun was not fun either.

see my point not to over balance the pistols. they should not be that powerful they are made to be artifically better in order to make them more usfull. In personal experince it is dam hard to hit a target with a 45 at more then 25 yards. so the pistols should be made as less accurate then everything else. Will shotguns are in fact powerful and are infact very acurate at medium range ask anyone who shoots clay pigoens. So it is in fact that pistols were brought up in order to make them even with every thing is the problem

MMO's do it all the time. Most of the time, it's about balancing the imbalance you caused with your last patch.

It's a Catch-22, really. If you don't give the gamers what they want (which leads to a lot of imbalancing), they blame you for not listening. If you give the players what they want and it tips the scales a little, they blame you for not maintaining the balance.

I think in MMO's are are able to have a lot of varity that makes up for it. you can be really strong but not have magic and the other way round. It is making a large varity and have specialization that makes you opisite but equal.

Yes and no.

No, because not all guns are made equal in the eyes of God, therefore they should not be represented as such in a video game.

Yes, because it's not really that fair to have people with crappy guns in a multi-player fragfest where other people have sweet guns.

I know what you mean. At the same time, it's not good when you have very unbalanced weapons, especially if you get them later than others(read: PTRS and PPSH in CoD:W@W), so it's a slippery slope either way. Best thing is, I guess, the Cod4 approach; have the best guns unlocked at the beginning (AK-47, M16, M4, MP5, M40, RPD, etc), while the later weapons are more specialized but not necessarily worse (G3, Barett, P90, G36, etc).

Thats really my point that guns have to be represented accuratly to a point but I think games like COD4 took it to far in making most guns completely interchangeable in each class. that some guns should be better then others

COD4 IS unbalanced. The DE is by far the best pistol, P90 is by far the best submachinegun, and the barrett is by far the best sniper rifle. Pretty much all of the high level guns are the "cheapest" (except for assault rifles).

See I disagree one I can use the .45 no problem against a DE, P90 only has fire rate, I can easily counter with the scorpion's higher accuracy. All the snipers are the same I can out snipe the 50 cal with any other they are all basicly the same

The three are still "better" most of the time, true there not god-like or anything but all things equal (player skill, perks) those three will come out on top.

See I don't agree, hence the thread in the first place that I feel if to people of equal skill were using say to snipers I think it would be a draw becasue they are so equal, also with the smgs

I would totally have to take 3rd rung's side on this argument.

The best Submachine gun is possibly the MP5 for it's fire rate and its accuracy firing off of the hip in medium to close range firefights. The first sniper, the M40, is possibly the best once you get used to the mechanics, followed closely by the R700, and the M9 silenced is possibly the best pistol due to its low recoil and high rate of fire.

Every time I use it it just feels easier to rack up kills than with whatever gun I was using before. That said, I tend to avoid it because it feels like an easy button for the game. So use it for whatever role you play in a match, but be mindful that only using this gun (which you'll be tempted to do) makes you miss out on other fun weapons.
(The P90 is unlocked at Rank 40 Colonel)
They also point out how the sniper choice is between the top two (level wise) ones (R700 and the Barrett).
