Good or Bad
Personally i hate when x-play or some gaming magazine preview a game and say how fantastic it is then slam the game when it comes out. if a game is crap tell us and the developer that before it comes out, dont put on your happy face and tell us to look for so and so when it comes out this fall!
or just over hyped pieces of excrement

Bad. Very bad.
Great example? Come on, anyone can see it. Halo 3. Halo 3 was WAY too over hyped, and I remember my brother beating it in like, a day. I was never interested in the series.
Then there's Super Smash Bros Brawl, which was also overhyped to hell. Haven't played that, but it just looks like a normal fighting game, just with Nintendo characters. It doesn't look all that special to me.
But yeah, overhyped games are extremely bad, because there will always be people who think that the hype was pure BS.

the new Soul Calibur

i'm sure it's worth the price just for the added roster and graphic improvements but the lack of technical innovation in the 12 years it has been around is just not impressive.

Gah, Super Smash Brothers: Brawl. People acted like it was going to be the second coming or something. If that game had solved world hunger fans would still have asked for more.

Little Big Planet is overhyped but i think it's deserved since the whole concept is like an eclipse of great art direction and side scrolling nostalgia.

i don't think it's a good vs bad issue. it's just that hype can be annoying when it's over something that you don't like and it's constantly being shoved in your face.

The original Fable... it was hyped as the best RPG of all time, yet although I liked the game, it wasn't particularly brilliant.

Hype can be a double-edged sword. It can bring lots of interest to your average game (ie. Gears of War) or put retarded expectations to your game which developers can never hope to achieve (Assassin's Creed). That's why I never fall for hype at all. I'll always get disappointed. Case in point GTA, FF, and so on. In that way I'm kinda like Yahtzee, I have poor to realistic expectations for games.

EDIT: If you were expecting more from Soulcalibur I have no hope for you.

I feel that way about the 2D/mostly 2D fighter since Bushido Blade and the old Team Some Guys v. Some Other Dudes games (Marvel v. Capcom, for example). It doesn't seem like the genre has moved forward in any way. The closest to an innovative game in the genre in the last decade has got to be the Super Smash Brothers. Not to get too off topic, but the game was at least not the usual, formulaic fighting game. (At least, not until Nintendo makes the fifth nearly identical version of it.)

That said...my only question is: why are you surprised at all? Like movies, games cost tens of millions to produce and can generate similar revenue. Just as all 'blockbuster' movies - no matter how mediocre - get hyped so will games. Maybe it's part of games becoming so mainstream; mass appeal matters to anyone hoping to cash in on the next big game, so the developers are more likely to avoid risky concept games and stick to sequels, adaptations, and frequently repeated formulas. They're likely to market the heck out of games and try to get in bed with the reviewers when possible. (Here's looking at you, Atari.) Sure, I'm being an elitist jerk, but if that much money is on the line, we can expect games to try to aim for a mainstream and to be marketed with the same hard-sell, over-hyped tactics as movies.

hmm.... I've never had much problem with over hyped games... Movies...on the other hand are retardedly hyped because after they come out they get retarded amounts of hype...
Example: The Ring
People watched it, claimed it was scary as hell... I watched and fell asleep.

At least with hyped games they are worth their time, they just aren't as good as they are made out to be...

Halo series... Not the greatest thing, but they are enjoyable...
Smash Brothers... It's okay and fun if you have friends over, since it's not too hard or skill based
Fable... I must have missed the hype first time around since I barely heard about it, and when I played it I liked it... It was a welcome relief from the turn based RPG's that dominated the market at the time.
C&C Renegade... Wasn't hyped much to most but it was hyped as the potentially the first RTS+FPS in a long time... Problem was they cut out any RTS. Multi-player was still okay(when it wasn't bugged to hell)

Only way you can be bothered by hype is if you actually believe it when someone tells you something is 'THE BEST THING EVER!'... In which case you're an idiot an deserve disappointment.

I never really understand the criticism of overly-hyped. Perhaps I'm just abnormally anti-social, but games are only ever categorized into 2 segments in my head. "Games I should check out" and "other people's games".
So I'm utterly unfazed by Halo 3 blowjob parties or Portal-induced epileptic fits, because I can't really tell the difference between 'hype' and 'justified popularity' from the outside

Halo series - the first game was definitely worth the hype, it was years ahead of its time. 2 and 3 were utter crap.
Crysis - it doesn't look half as pretty as anyone says and it plays worse than Big Rigs: Over The Road Racing. Performance, AI, gameplay and even the multiplayer are all crap. Especially performance. The hype this game had was ridiculous.
Grand Theft Auto IV - it's a great game, but massively over-hyped. It breaks with tradition so much and kills much of what made III, Vice City and San Andreas so much fun.

Fable is synonymous with extreme amounts of hype. Now that they're making Fable 2, it might actually live up to what they said was going to be in the original. Fable is still a great game though.

I think the one thing that bugs me with hype is when people expect the sky when a sequel is announced. Especially with FPS and fighting games. I mean c'mon, do you really think that there's going to be more than just extra weapons/extra characters/slight changes to gameplay?

The only time this hasn't been the case was Half-Life 2, I really didn't see the gravity gun coming.

Im gonna go with... oblivion... yeah... oblivion. After it came out I was reading articles that stated, point blank, "What kind of rpgs can be made now that Oblivion is out?" "Clearly the best RPG ever made.", cept, it was so perfect it was boring, so damn boring, like a beauty queen with not even a flake of bad skin, that can't hold a conversation or even do anything but stand around. Damn, can't believe I picked it up for fifty bucks.

Alright, so you don't think Crysis looks good. What do you think looks good?

More on topic: I agree with Proto Cloud. If you're a game dev, you want hype, just not too much.
