Over Hyped Games

Killzone was, in my opinion a very good game. The story was more engaging then almost any other FPS i've played, largely thanks to characters you can actually sympathize with. Also I loved the sniper rifle mechanics because they were actually difficult to use... Anyway what killed Killzone was all the hype it got as a "Halo Killer" despite the fact that the developers themselves claimed nothing of the sort. So when the game was released and did not work as an opposition to Halo (the games are very different in feel and focus) people were disappointed.

I'll go and agree with others in this thread that say the Halo series was hideously overrated.

My two biggest over-hyped games would be Fable and Halo 3.

Fable, because everyone in the game industry was like "Ahh! Worlds that grow with you! Chop down a tree and it's stump will still be there in 30 in game years! It's going to be the most expansive gaming world ever! Every time you play your character will be completely different! You can be good, evil or anything in between!!!

Really? Because the world was EXACTLY the same throughout the entire game, except at the very end of the game where the sky turns red because bad stuff is happening. The gaming world I got was definatly NOT the one I was promised. Instead of most of Europe, I only got about 3 square miles of England. And your characters always ended up exactly the same! Yes, my guy is evil, but he was exactly the same as my good guy, except his armour was black instead of gold and he had horns growing out of his head. Hell, even the ending is almost the same. Yes, it was still rather fun, but it was in no way the game that descends from the Heavens that will lead us into the promised land of gaming that it was supposed to be.
I do not have high hopes for Fable 2.

And Halo 3 just because everyone was like "Halo 3! It'll be better than all things awesome in the world combined!", except it was just a decent shooter, with okay multiplayer, but nothing too horribly special.

Crysis - it doesn't look half as pretty as anyone says

One of these is real life. The other one is Crysis. Pick which is which.

It's not impossible, but there's no way in hell you can do it at a glance.

Left one is crysis? The picture is a bit sharp, The grass has no deviation, and the shadows arn't on par as much as I would hope. The moutains are meh not enough AA, and the gates not beat up when the rest of the house looks it.

Y'know, if you haven't already noticed, all the big name games have some form of hype. They wouldn't be having coverage if they didn't have the hype. Now all this hype leads to high expectations and eventually/possibly disappoints. Like Killzone. And Haze.

@Soul Calibur 4 - Two words: Online Multiplayer. Not exactly innovative I know, but it opens up the game so much more when you don't have to rely on just smacking around the AI or the same couple of friends. Having a fighting game go online means a lot to the hardcore players. Playing against other people is what makes you a better player. If you keep playing the same people over and over, all you do is learn to beat each other, and not necessarily learn to expand your own abilities.

Now if I could just get Guilty Gear XX Accent Core online or even a fancy new Guilty Gear I'll be happy. Although I don't think they've got the heart to stick to the naming conventions and actually call it Guilty Gear XXX.

Anyhoo, as far as most overhyped game ever OTHER than Daikatana?
Oblivion, without a doubt. For all its technicial prowess that game didn't even come close to sharing a pedastal with the likes of the Fallout and Baldur's Gate series. Best RPG ever? Pff not a chance in hell. It didn't even come close to improving upon Morrowind (it actually really screwed up a few things).

I liked Oblivion a lot, but maybe thats because the only thing I read about it was ign's rather high score. It looked kinda interesting so i picked it up and played it for three months straight. I guess the moral of the story is; don't read the previews, just take a very brief look at the reviews. Or make your own mind up.
I never looked at any previews of Fable, Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3 or Gears of War. I read a brief review here and there and watched a couple of videos and went out and got them.
I really think there's a market for a games website which doesn't deal in hype or listen to public opinion. I bet if you didn't listen know of any of the hype or criticism of Halo3, then sat down and played it, you'd think it was pretty sweet. Although playing of previous Halo's would obviously help, so as long as you didn't know anything about them then you'd think they were all sweet. Probably the same with the original Killzone, which was way overhyped for being what i eventually concluded was a pretty bog-standard FPS. Had I not known of the hype, I would have liked it more I'm sure

Yet kratos could kill the master chief? Plus kratos has already shown he can kill gods.
Yeah and I bet Iron Man could kill Kratos. But Iron Man was a shit game, so whats your point?

That the ps3 is better than the 360 because it's DVD's are made of solid diamond.

As for hype. I think games can be overhyped sheerly by their nature. Duke Nukem Forever for example will never live up to it's hype because 10 years generates a shitload of expectations. Same goes for games that are sequels to epic games. Each sequel to something like MGS has to be better in every way or it won't live up to the hype, unfortunately only one of them did.

MGS4 lived up to all the hype. All of it.
bullshit it did. while the boss fights were excellent (with the exception of the one with vamp), and the gameplay sections that it did have were pretty good, the fact it suffers from the same problem that mgs3 suffered from, aka 10 minute gameplay sections broken up by 30 minutes of cutscenes. not only that but there was so much more that could have been done, in act 5 for example the arsenal gear could have been much larger and more complex, with mutiple routes though the thing, and so many of the cutscenes could have been cut out or at least toned down in how much time they took up by giving you the story during gameplay (for one having the listening device from mgs2), and even then they could have made it so youd have to go to extra lengths to get all the story. it was a good game, but it could have been so much better and there are so many areas where this is just blatantly obvious.

ill agree and disagree with the person who said crysis. disagree because the git doesent know what hes talking about (stop looking at FAR CRY), but agree that it didnt live up to the hype. mostly because few of the things that they promised (and subsequently things that got me interested in the game) were actually in the final release.
Maybe someone *GASP* has a differing opinion? You have yours, I have mine. Let's not turn this into a flame war. There is no need for you to assault someone else because of their opinion. Contrary to popular belief, it does NOT make your argument more valid.
i'm sorry but no. This is a forum. I or anyone else are perfectly within their rights to give a reply or voice disagreement. Unless someone is just intentionally provoking you or being a jerk intentionally then starting or having an argument is fine. That's the point.

on topic: I really think Killzone 2 is being way overhyped. From what i've seen the actual gameplay looks a bit dull. The graphics are amazing (if rather colorblind) but i just don't see what everybody else seems to.

Yeah, but GH Aerosmith has RUN DMC in it too, and I am a fan of them.
