I was posting in FolkLikePanda's under rated musician thread and I noticed that some people were mentioning over rated musicians/bands as well, so I thought I would just open up a thread devoted to the that topic as well.
So who do you think is over rated in the music world?

I personally dont like U2 and I dont get their appeal, most of that is to do with bono's voice, its horrible, but he is seen as a great musician by people.
I also dont like Tom De'Longe from Blink 182, I like blink 182 but I hate Tom's voice and his guitar work isnt really earth shaking.

As you can tell I think that a singer sets the tone of the band because they are the most (pardon the pun) vocal and noticable in the band. So for me a great band can be ruined by a bad set of vocals that dont work well with the rest of the band.

What do you think?

Personally I hate black eyed peas now.

How hard is it to get at least 3 lines of differing lyrics people?

STOP SAYING THE EXACT SAME THING FOR THE ENTIRE FREAKING SONG

As much as I sound like a mustaine lover right now : Metallica and the fans of metallica who refuse to give Megadeth a chance. (Seriously give Megadeth an actual chance you will be suprised)

finally someone who agrees with me Metallica are a bunch of sell-outs now 1989 onwards it all went downhill. Megadeth's new album Endgame is better than Death Magnetic

This is a controvertial one but Nirvana. I don't mean to say that they're bad I'm just saying that they were over-rated. In terms of defining a genre they are very important but there aren't exactly a lot of good Nirvana songs. Maybe there would have been more if Kurt hadn't painted the wall with his brains, who knows.

Linkin Park. I don't think I need to even explain this one do I?

Led Zeppelin. Kind of like Nirvana in that there are people who think they're the best thing to happen to music ever but really they don't have all that many good songs. Good, sure, not great.

I absolutely agree that U2 is one of the most overrated bands. OK they're not bad and they sometimes have a hit I absolutely adore, but I really don't feel they deserve all the credit they get. For instance to become a member of U2.com you need to pay $50 per year. This will allow you to buy tickets before they go in normal sale. So you don't get a discount or anything, you can just buy them earlier. I don't know of any other band that allows this kind of "service". So in my opinion they're severely overhyped.

Kurt "I shot myself after one decentish album" Cobain.

Nevermind is not the greatest album ever. Nirvana would likely have followed similar career trajectories as dozens of other bands and faded into relative obscurity if Cobain hadn't martyred himself and been immortalised on a billion hoodies.

metallica i think ... they have all few good awesome songs butand everyone makes out that they're practically a gift from god which just isn't true =|
Because they are. Best Metal band of all time.

OT DragonForce. They have all of 2 songs, everything sounds the same, go away the only reason you got anywhere was because of guitar hero was overdone anyway. It's not as hard as the game makes it out to be. Sure its hard, the guy can play give him that, but they could be making such more meaningful, better music.

Pretty much anything that is on top 40 radio is overrated. Overly repetitive lyrics and beats. Over produced and Auto Tuned.

metallica aren't overrated, they spearheaded and defined an entire genre along with slayer, anthrax and megadeth. they've sold more records than any other band on earth besides the beatle, including 5 consecutive no. one albums & Master of Puppets remains one of the greatest albums of all time. hmph.
yes i expect backlash.

I was really talking about the fans more than Metallica itself. But what the fuck is with the drumming on that album(Death Magnetic), it sounds like garbage cans instead of actual drums. I don't mind "No Leaf Clover" but everthing else during Metallica's sellout period is bullshit.

Kanye West is overrated by no-one but himself.

Metallica, Nirvana, The Beatles, U2, Machine Head, Slayer, Guns n Roses and there's another band whom everyone bums but I can't even remember their name I hate them so much.

[EDIT] I was trying to find the quote about Kanye West but I can't find who wrote it now, so I'll have to leave it.

I agree that Nirvana are overated, but I blame the millions of angsty teenage fans for talking about them like they shit golden eggs.

As for Led Zeppelin: I get the impression you just havn't listened to them enough, Led Zeppelin IV is one of the best albums ever made...You may have to skip Stairway though...
