metallica i think ... they have all few good awesome songs butand everyone makes out that they're practically a gift from god which just isn't true =|
Because they are. Best Metal band of all time.

OT DragonForce. They have all of 2 songs, everything sounds the same, go away the only reason you got anywhere was because of guitar hero was overdone anyway. It's not as hard as the game makes it out to be. Sure its hard, the guy can play give him that, but they could be making such more meaningful, better music.
i agree with you on dragonforce they are quite repetative in there songs but do have a few good ones, but i disagree with you on metallica being the best metal band of all time ... that title belongs to IRON MAIDEN!! WOOOOOOOOOO! =) LOL!
Well I didn't say it wasn't up for debate if you're going to name a worth band such as Iron Maiden. But I still maintain my personal opinion that Metallica are the greatest Metal band ever.

metallica aren't overrated, they spearheaded and defined an entire genre along with slayer, anthrax and megadeth. they've sold more records than any other band on earth besides the beatle, including 5 consecutive no. one albums & Master of Puppets remains one of the greatest albums of all time. hmph.
yes i expect backlash.
I really only hate the snobby Metallica fans who hate Megadeth and refuse to listen to Megadeth (Basically everyone of my friends except one who doesn't care about music and another who is open minded to music). One of my friends whenever I say currently Megadeth are ahead of Metallica keeps going "Mustaine said he would do anything to be back in Metallica." But then again it is pointless arguing Mustaine unstable opinions as he doesn't even know what Melodic death metal is. and thinks I mean metalcore.

It's really sad that you have to expect backlash for voicing an opinion. Does the internet really degrade people so much that if we have a legitimate opinion we need to brace for a verbal punch in the face? I know the answer is yes, but DAMN it's a sad state of affairs.

Thank you public school system for telling everyone that they're special, and making everyone feel entitled.

How do you judge if a band is overrated? If they are successful they must be doing something right. And despite the rise of WOW i cant believe that millions of people can love something repetitive and bland. And why all the hat for Metallica (they helped bring metal to the masses, clearly they are bland and horrible i guess), Nirvana (maybe everyone has a phobia of allegories) and the Beatles (at the time they were very different, hence the success). It must just be personal opinion, so i am going for Jimmy Hendrix, Michael Jackson and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Curse their successful and popular hides!

Led Zeppelin. Kind of like Nirvana in that there are people who think they're the best thing to happen to music ever but really they don't have all that many good songs. Good, sure, not great.
I don't think you listened to them at all if you really think songs like Stairway to Heaven and Kashmir aren't great songs.

Hmmm over rated, well there is Britney Spears, Hannah Montanna, Jonas Brothers, Miley Cirus, Lady Gaga, etc. They shouldn't even be allowed on TV!

If they brought out those songs back in the 70s, they would have just died straight away.

Kashmir is the only Led Zeppelin song I don't like ironically.

I'll go out and say that every well known band that can make their money doing music is overrated. What's up with idolizing mucisians?

Personally I hate black eyed peas now.

How hard is it to get at least 3 lines of differing lyrics people?

STOP SAYING THE EXACT SAME THING FOR THE ENTIRE FREAKING SONG
(sings) "I got a feeling (woohoo) that tonight's gonna be a good night, that tonight's gonna be a good night, that tonight's gonna be a good good night..." ;D

I am cruel.

Anyway, my overrated band is Oasis (cue Kanye West storming on): "Hey Oasis, I'm real happy for ya and I'mma let you finish, but... (cue Liam Gallagher giving him a Glasgow Kiss and knocking Kanye's sorry ass all over the stage at V Festival - oh, wait...).

Seriously though, Kanye West is pretty overrated (the guy's a bit of a douche, and I never really liked his music much anyway, to be honest). That said he rates himself the highest anyway. And Oasis are great, fair enough, but they only came out with a few really good songs. They're a good band, true, but they don't deserve the massive amounts of adoration they seem (correction, seemed) to get. I'll miss them now, but there was never any need for the massive publicity they got when they said they were splitting up.

Stairway has lost pretty much all it's appeal to me, blame overplaying.
As for Kashmir - it's cool and all but it hasn't aged well. That's probably Led Zep's problem; their songs don't age well.

Yngwie Malsteen or however it's spelled. ...although he's a solo artist not a band, I'll assume that I can just include him anyway.
Just because you can play fast, doesn't make it sound good.

Nirvana and Coldplay. The first didn't create a single song that was not just new but also good, and the latter didn't do either.

Coldplay, Radiohead, the entire genre of nu-metal (Korn, Linkin Park, Slipknot, POD, etc).

I lol'd at the whole Metallica vs Megadeth thing popping up almost immediately. They're BOTH massively overrated by their fans, but apart from that noone really gives a damn.

Anyway, it's hard to say what's overrated and what's not. It really just boils down to "this is popular but I don't like it".

I was posting in FolkLikePanda's under rated musician thread and I noticed that some people were mentioning over rated musicians/bands as well, so I thought I would just open up a thread devoted to the that topic as well.
So who do you think is over rated in the music world?

I personally dont like U2 and I dont get their appeal, most of that is to do with bono's voice, its horrible, but he is seen as a great musician by people.
I also dont like Tom De'Longe from Blink 182, I like blink 182 but I hate Tom's voice and his guitar work isnt really earth shaking.

As you can tell I think that a singer sets the tone of the band because they are the most (pardon the pun) vocal and noticable in the band. So for me a great band can be ruined by a bad set of vocals that dont work well with the rest of the band.

What do you think?
U2 and Dreamtheater... easy.
