Why was it important to provide that level of characterization in a team based shooter game? What, does she get a buff when she's recently looked at Widowmaker's ass or something? How does character sexuality even matter in that game?

Seems more like Blizzard saying "Oh, look at us we're being inclusive!" while actually meaning "Let's whip the simpletons into a frenzy for more free press!"

I was playing Overwatch last night and one guy started every game he was in by saying:

"So, just so you know, they made Tracer a lesbian. Now I don't have a problem with it, but don't you think there's some sort of agenda going on?"

Sure guy. I believe you.

Every. Game.

I'm not sure if this is my favorite direction for the character, because I liked her sexuality not being brought into the mix (Whichever way it swung), but eh. The story's shit anyways.

Why is it important to know that Genji and the other Japanese character are brothers? Do they get a buff if they recently worked with each other? Why is it important to know that Widowmaker gets off on killing? Does the player get an orgasm transmitted through the controller for every kill she gets? Why does it matter that Winston is an idealist, who took his name from the scientist that raised him, and wants to genuinely save the world and make it a better place? Why does it matter that Soldier 76 and Reaper have a history and are rivals, I could go on and on with every other character detail that's been published that has nothing to do with the game. And yet, nobody seems to be bothered by all that "extra, unnecessary data", but someone's sexuality is declared? All bets are off it seems.

You guys might be joking, but i'd actually seriously love this. Incentive to roleplay your characters ftw

To be fair, all of that is completely meaningless to the game, gameplay and the plot. None of the characters' personalities, interests, fetishes, petpeeves, likes, dislikes, fears and hopes ever come into play at any point. Ever.
So all of that is kinda unimportant...

Which is exactly my point. People are saying things like "this has nothing to do with the game, so why did they do it?" and I'm pointing out that you can equally say that about all the other shit too, so why single out her sexuality? It's just as meaningless to the game as every other character detail that nobody seems to mind.

You know what it sounds like you got there? An intrepid undercover member of the Games Media, trying to scare up some quotes for the next piece of clickbait trash about all teh "outrage". Probably all written up already, save for that juicy "Look at how backward the natives are!" quote.

Having read through about 6 pages, i'd say that the reaction is much better than the one for Battlefield 1 (Playing as a black character), and Dragon Age: Inquisition (more graphic gay romances).

Those were just... awful. Then again, though, these are apples to oranges, as the BF1 and DAI comments were from YouTube, and that is just a festering pile 365 days a year, anyway.

do you even play the game?????

genji and hanzo wouldn't get buffs

they'd get debuffs

they hate eachother
If you watched The Two Dragons cinematic they released and came away from that with the opinion they hate each other, you clearly weren't paying attention to the narrative.
