OK, despite my reluctance, I'm being tempted by Overwatch, it's gotten to the point where it's cheap enough for me to consider an online only shooter. My question to you all is. I'd it worth getting into now? As a newbie, am I going to get curb stomped by everyone about 487 levels above me or will I stand a chance?

The game has systems in place that (I)should(/i) pair you up with players of similar skill and experience, but it really comes down to luck sometimes.

One tip I'll give is pick 'easier' heroes to start with before trying the 3 star ones, and also pay attention to what your team picks, and try to complement what they have.

One final golden rule - if your team needs a healer, take one instead of spamming 'we need a healer' in chat.

Depends how much experience you have with shooters.

If you've played a bunch, and TF2 in particular, then you should do fine. It'll just be a matter of learning the characters, and they're all pretty straightforward.

Do you like Team Fortress 2? If the answer is yes, then you'll probably love Overwatch. Overwatch is an excellent successor to TF2, and more fun to play IMO as it feels better balanced and with enough variety in characters to keep you coming back. All of the characters are good, but you may not be able to play some of them very well. Characters that I thought I would love I'm not as good with - but it doesn't feel like the game is being cheap, I feel like it's poor skill on my part and probably not enough practice and understanding the mechanics of some of those characters.

I played the beta on Xbox and loved it - but I couldn't justify purchasing an online only game. Recently a friend suggested it and he bought it anyway. Since it's on sale I picked up too, and now the last few nights I've been going to bed at 2 am and need to be up by 6. :(

There's no "loot progression" so everything is fair in game with loot being cosmetic so no one is going to be more overpowered than you. Matchmaking seems to be decent, and on xbox I never grouped with anyone but as with most multiplayer games it's always more fun with friends. I'd recommend starting in matches against the AI until you feel comfortable with your character then go in. It can feel overwhelming if you look at several charcters in a row and their special abilities - but when you start playing with one and understanding what they do, you'll pick it up quick. Also watching the killcams and observing how others on your team use their abilities.

Hope you dont mind trying to figure out how the characters play. I think my biggest gameplay gripe with the game is how not obvious most of the characters are to play. TF2 I feel the classes are all easy to get the idea of. Soldier is straight up damage, sniper is long range, engineer builds, heavy is the tank, etc.

Some characters in Overwatch are straight forward like Soldier 76 and Mercy, but others not so much. And all these characters with all these abilities, its tedious to try to figure each out. I wish they just had a small blurb describing the point of each character. Had no idea what the hell D.Va was supposed to do until I asked my friends who do like Overwatch, apparently its all about her defense shield.

Free weekend just ended + sale going on, meaning most likely you would be playing against a lot of new players.

Personally, with what little time I did spent on the free weekend, I'm disappointed, because I was expecting the new and improved vanilla tf2. Superficially, Overwatch resembles tf2, but really it's first person Dota, but only the late-game portion.

Overwatch is 6v6 only, and games are way too short. As a result, practically everything you are doing is important. If you die you have to wait 15 seconds and spend another 20-30 seconds walking back to the objective, out of what could be potentially a 6 minute game. The short game time is not really an issue in itself, but rather the downtime waiting for the Play of the Game to finish, commendations, and matchmaking.

Just like Dota, what heroes your team has practically determines how the game will end up, with support being the most important role. But just like Dota, nobody wants to play them. If you don't have a healer, prepare to lose. The most engaging and mechanically satisfying heroes that everyone keeps picking are of course, the most useless. If the enemy has Reinhardt and 2 other tanks and you don't have Reinhardt and 2 other tanks, prepare to lose. One would think that that the counter to a tank would be a sniper or a stealth hero, but that's not the case.

I would say if you enjoy tf2 as a casual game, then this isn't worth it. If you enjoy and are good at Dota and CSGO, or like CSGO but with less importance with accuracy, you're pretty much at home.

Overwatch was always worth it.

If you are familiar with FPS games and what an objective is, then you will do fine. It will take time to get used to each hero, but if you aren't prepared for that then I wouldn't bother buying any new games.

And the matchmaking seems to match you with people who are more or less on your skill level. There is a vs. AI mode, but frankly, just jump into arcade random hero and get used to the game.

Don't worry too much about not understanding all the attacks/characters/abilities, that will come in time. And for your first few levels, the matchmaker will only match you with other brand new players, so you'll all be in the same boat.

At first, you will die randomly to attacks and various things that you don't fully understand yet, but the flipside of that is that the enemies will often be just as oblivious.

I still have fond memories of getting a sextuple kill with a D.Va bomb in one of my very first matches, and it was because all the players on the enemy team were literally all brand new and had no idea what happens after "NERF THIS!" is yelled out.
Now that I've prestiged a couple of times, the matchmaker matches me with actual experienced players, and I'm lucky to even get a double-kill with a D.Va bomb these days (without combo-ing it with something else).

I say enjoy it while it lasts.

I'm pondering the same issues, and the price point for an MP only game has been the biggest turn-off for me.

...if I can find it for about ?18, I'll probably give it a shot, provided there are enough non-obsessives playing on XB1 to make it fun for the occasional blast.

Its preference but for me the short rounds make it work. There is no filler, everything you do counts and unlike, say Battlefield, where a long game on a losing team can take forever, a bad game is quickly over and you can get into it.

I disagree that the game is about support, Ive run teams with 1 and no healer. The game is about looking at what is not working and changing up to counter it. The good players flex and adapt.

If you opponent rolls 3 tanks you adjust to it and there are counters, bastion, sombra, reaper, pharah, tracer, roadhog... You do not have to meet Reinhart with Reinhart. You need to play the game to get a feel for this though.

If youre starting out Id start with soldier and roadhog.

At 20 bucks it's certainly worth it. If you have buddies to play with it's even more worth it.

I payed the full 60 and haven't regretted it once. I also suck at FPS, but, like TF2, there are rolls to play outside of run and gun.

I'm of the opinion that games with free-to-play elements such as micro transactions are never worth anything above the price of free. If I have paid for a game, I do not want that game designed to wear me down to always pay a little bit more.

Overwatch is really on the decline for me.

I feel like with every balance patch since Ana was introduced the balance of the game has actually gotten worse. I'm also not a fan of them putting the one hero limit into quickplay, which has really ruined a lot of my fun.

Sure, "no limits" is still a thing in the Arcade...once in a while...when Blizzard feels like it. Funny how the game mode that the game LAUNCHED WITH and which was the draw of the game is currently nowhere to be found.

MMR is also still totally borked.

I find myself playing less and less now, only hopping on when there's an event happening, and all of my friends are the same.

I don't know what newbie/low level play is like, since I have...I don't know, Blizzard doesn't keep track of Arcade time for some fucking reason, so I can only assume something well above 500 hours of gametime.

But I feel like, with the popularity the game still strongly has, I could be just now getting into the game and have a good time. I kind of thought about getting a new account, but I figured that'd be unfair since I would likely be put with low level players at first and because I don't want to spend money again on a game I already own.

But you'd have a lot to catch up with, which could be good or bad. I'd say it's worth it if you like online shooters already, if anything it's quick to pick up on in its basics.

With THAT loot system, even by the low LOW standards of online-only games, Overwatch will always be garbage.

I don't get this. You don't have to pay for anything, and Blizzard has been adding new quality content outside of skins, which have no effect on gameplay. If you can't appreciate a game for it's gameplay, then maybe the game isn't for you. Skins are merely icing.

Get this entitled garbage out of here.

It's too bad you missed the free weekend, I would definitely recommend trying it before buying. I was very excited about this game once I got into the beta since I love online FPS, but only played for a couple hours before it got really boring. It seems like it combines the worst aspects of big genres, the try-hard raging of competitive realism shooters, the floaty shooting and lifeless characters of cartoon-y shooters, the short matches of arena shooters without the tight controls and gunplay to make it work, and the rock-paper-scissors hard countering of MOBAs.

I tried it again last weekend and bounced off even harder than in beta, to the point where even for free it's not worth it to me, YMMV but if you're going to buy it it is still on sale for another day or two I think.
