Last summer, Sarah Palin tweeted the word "refudiate". Now, The New Oxford American Dictionary is accepting her word into their dictionary, as well as naming it "Word of the Year".

I for one consider this utter bullshit. We should not be praising morons for their misuse of the English language.

Anyone think differently? Comments? Anyone else as livid about this as me?

I honestly don't see why it means anything. New words are added to the dictionary all the time. This is only a big deal because it is Sarah Palin.

No, I agree with you here. While our languages are living languages and change as we speak it, I dont think we should reward bad literacy and verbal skills.

Ehh, for some reason to which I can only attribute to witchcraft, Of the people who like her, they REALLY like her to the point of living in denial of her blatant idiocy. (not because of her party, shes just that dumb)

However, wouldnt this have been better suited to Religion and politics forum? Being in off topic opens up the gas station for a flame war to develop.

Silly question... but is the 'New Oxford American Dictionary' renowned for its razor sharp wielding of sarcasm? I sincerely hope so.

ughhh... every breath Palin breathes makes me angry. i actually considered McCain a viable candidate until he picked Palin as his running mate. i will admit that i tend to lean a bit more to the left, but, yeah... Palin embodies pretty much everything i hate about pretty much everything. what's really scary is this new talk about Palin actually being a viable PotUS candidate for 2012 :( damn, she makes Dubya look like a genius.

i really shouldn't post this, 'cause i'm sure some tea-partier will jump up to defend the Mad Hatter, but, yeah... she just incites me to rage.

oh, and back on topic: yeah, i am absolutely livid that they'd treat "refudiate" as a legitimate contribution to the language :(

I have no issue with new words being coined, and I think our language should be constantly malleable.

However, I think this is a fucking stupid word that means nothing. There are several other words already like it, it's just that she was too much of the 'idiot trying to be high-brow' to know them.

This particular story is just awful, and to add insult to injury it's not even a particularly nice word. It's not easy to say and has no poetry to it.

F- Oxford, F-

Though I suppose it is Oxford American, so I don't know what I was expecting...

Thought about that, wasn't positive because it really has nothing to do with politics, just happens to be about a politician.

MODS: If this should be in the Religion/Politics forum, please feel free to move it there.

Oh God.

Sarah Palin is Officially the worst future president in the world.

At least Bush was a fun guy.

Haha! You know, I said the same thing after the fact. Its so sad that this country just allows idiocy to run amok nowadays. Promoting it, however, is a whole different level of sadness.

Hopefully the next accolade Palin will attract will be "corpse of the year" or "miss necroverse[footnote]Intended slang, I realise this is not a word. Please do not add it to the Dictionary, oh great resourceful people of Oxford.[/footnote]".

And yes I would be angry if anyone else but her was involved with defiling our language, but it just makes it so much worse that she is a participant.

Not if I have something to say about it... oh wait that's right being a liberal I don't have any guns, well I guess it's back to biting sarcasm and making jokes about her poor choice of names for her downs baby.

OT: This is moronic, to even think of adding this word is a slap in the face to everyone who understands basic English.

While I am more than happy that new words can be added to the dictionary, that fact that the word is just a combination of refute and repudiate (and means the same as both words) makes it unnecessary. As a Tea Party supporter, I am offended and stupified by the sheer audacity of this shit. Palin needs to shut up, and webster needs to stay the fuck away from her.

You know that's truely terrifying? She could be the next president if Obama goes.

Try not to think about that too much, I'm certainly not.

OT: I don't really mind that she said the word, but the dictionary in question going that far? Sounds a little like the New Oxford American Dictionary is trying to bake itself some brownie points, which makes me lose credibility with it.

Can you imagine what it would say, though?

Refudite - Re-feud-ite [I think.]
a, a person that refudes something (see refude, refudinate)
b, a person belonging to the secretive Refude cult.
c, we love you Sarah Palin.
d, marry us.

They generally have to rexhonorate themselves into procrudian usage before they are deformatised into dictionaries.

This one totally elongavated the process of infurundating itself upon the public awardeception.

And with that
I don't think I could agree with you more.

It's astounding, the veracity with which our culture celebrates stupidity. It really does make me want to go colonize Mars...
