Pandas are adorable, and the Chinese government wants them around, so why not keep them alive?
Because the Chinese probably plan to harvest their liver and throw away the rest, like they do with almost every other animal in their country; cut off one bit, make it into fine cuisine, and throw the rest in the bin.

OT; No. Sorry, but if they won't hump themselves off the endangered species list, they ain't worth saving. Put them back in the wild and leave them to be damned or saved by nature.
Mmm, panda intestine soup

Seriously though, it's probably just a national pride thing. Why all the China hate?

Who are we to tell them what they ought to save? It's one of the more decent ways to spend money, especially since deforestation is probably a big reason for them becoming an endangered species.
I don't hate China. I just dislike the way it handles certain things. Like politics or criticism. In this case, I dislike how it handles wildlife.

As for spending money, no. A decent way would be giving the poor a decent education and researching a way to get around the 'one child per couple' rule without poor people drowning their secondborn kids or whatever.
You know, raising a few pandas is pretty cheap compared to helping millions of poor people. It's like saying, "Instead of wasting money on no smoking ads, we could have universal healthcare."

And politically, it's slowly becoming more open, and it's fairly stable, which is more than some overnight democracies can claim.

People only care about pandas because they're cute. If they looked like a cockroach, no one would care about them at all. They are probably the most useless animal in existence.

But helping millions of poor people could yield more benefits than raising a few pandas. All they will do is sit on their ass, eat bamboo and maybe bear a cub or two.

As for politics...I dunno, I don't trust a place that cheats in the Olympic opening ceremony. >=( XD
What I'm trying to say is that it's perfectly possible to do both. A few extra pandas is like buying a desklamp with the purchase of your house. Besides, it's not so much that money isn't directed to the poor, it's that money directed to the poor ends up in some official's pocket.

As for the Olympics, you forgot to mention the fourteen year old gymnasts :p
I don't know what the Olympics committee was thinking when they picked Beijing...

Screw the pandas. Save the Hirudo Medicinalis!

They're currently at "near threatened" status right now, but they have been endangered in the past. They're a great little organism and they're beyond fascinating and extremely useful to engineers and medical professionals alike. Their nervous system is very similar to the human nervous system and could prove to hold the solution to many nervous system based problems.

People just don't care about them because they're not cute, but Hirudo Medicinalis could save your life one day.

SAVE THE LEECH!

So you think that because natural selection has led them down a path where they have evolved to their current state makes them idiots? That's like saying that if you are born with no legs that its your fault. It's not, and only an IDIOT would think so. Also humans tend to have one defenseless child at a time which tend to be hard to protect and more often than not the fathers bugger off to work or to find the next truck stop waitress to knock up while the mother lays on the couch eating spicy junk foods.

As the majority of humans are unenlightened idiots who can't see beyond their noses and destroy whatever habitat they inhabit, not to mention that they gorge themselves on frequently barely digestible and wholly unnatural foodstuffs.

I can sit and draw comparisons between the human animal and the panda all day long and find ways in which the Panda is actually superior. But that is not the point of what I am saying.

To be human is to have a shred of humanity. Without compassion and understanding we are little better than parasites who inhabit a world before we ourselves go extinct because we destroyed ourselves.

The lack of humanity displayed on this thread is sadly typical of the society and culture that prevails today. Life is not a game. How would you feel if something elsewhere considered us to be unworthy of survival because of what we do?

People murder each other over petty things, they bring incredible suffering and laugh about it. People do such terrible things to their own kind and yet we hold ourselves up as the pinnacle of creation? When I look at the world I know that I am raising a child in it and feel afraid for her.

I've been part of the online gaming community a long time, I even met the father of my child here and yet I'm frequently ashamed of what I see. Speaking about life and death as if they were nothing more than ones and zeroes.

The Panda is a gentle and loving creature and knows nothing of malice. They are not perfect, and if they had actually remained undisturbed by the encroachment of humans they may have eventually evolved into a more efficient state.

Simply put they will never evolve beyond the point they are now and shall become extinct because of the spread of humans. It makes me wonder if we will ever evolve beyond the mindless stupidity that dominates our species.

Because we KNOW better, and that truly makes us the real idiots.

Pandas are cute and it would be a shame for them to disappear. But why the fuck won't they save themselves? If they dont feel like living why should we keep them from dying? We've tried for years to save them and still they can't be arsed to save themselves. Useless animal.

Pandas. Firstly, take their looks; black and white, supposedly to camouflage in with snowy mountains with deep shadows.
So they live in bamboo forests.

Their diet is 99% bamboo. Pandas can't digest bamboo properly. They're clearly idiots. Wikipedia tells me they've been living in bamboo forests for millions of years, and haven't evolved the guts to properly digest the food they life off've.
Idiots.
Pandas eat fish. They are carnivorous.

Remember, the panda-bear is a chimera-esque animal that is half panda and half bear. Unlike the koala-bear, who's name merely contains the word "bear", the panda has a variety of diets.

Yeah. Pandas are so... stupid.

They should eat meat. But I think they don't have taste buds that enjoy meat or something. Bamboo tastes better for them. Its like a human eating bark that was sprinkled in powdered sugar. Tastes better but it doesn't do anything for you.

Plus they sometimes don't even wanna mate with another Panda. What's wrong here...

They would have died off without our help long ago.

Even if there wasn't any human interaction, a large group of them would have eaten all of the bamboo in their area and therefore died.

Yeesh. Best part is that they have nothing to offer us other than 'something pretty to look at'. Cows for meat and milk. Ox and Horses for beasts of burden. Pandas to be a pain in the ass.
Pandas do eat meat. Like I elaborated in my previous post.
Bear in mind though that they only eat meat when they can't find any more useless bamboo to stuff into their stupid faces.
Meat accounts for something like 1% of their diet according to the Wikigods.

But they're sooooooooooo adoooooorable.

No but seriously, are they causing harm? If not, just let them do their own thing, if they die out, so be it. I;m not saying we should poor millions into saving a potentially useless species (debatable as pandas can be used to lots of things other than just natural cycle, see entertainment "Kung Fu Panda"), but don't go out and kill them!

I like pandas and all but I wonder what panda stew or panda steaks would taste like. If we stop trying to save them is it okay if I eat one?
Oh man, I'd try that. Om nom.

In the words of Noel Vermillion:

Hands off the panda!
Meh, I'll take her guns away - she won't be saying anything then! Haha, I've cut your strings little puppet!

panda doing badly is a good deal our fault.
they were around before us, so i'm sure it isn't because of mother nature's fail that they're endangered.
by that idea, tigers ad elephants are also endangered because they suck and can't handle themselves.

they're endangered because of us, we need to take responsibility.
help them reproduce in safety or kill ourselves to better the planet (whichever comes first)

/endthread.

Applause, sir. I see you've played a blaz or two.

Christina Vee, shockingly, though not unwelcomely, cute.

There are weird animals out there with weird mating practices that didn't take human intervention into account. I think Douglas Adams mentions a bird in this awesome talk that has similar problems:

I watched that entire thing and consequentially stayed up far later than I had intended to. Entertaining though, a good watch.
