So, what do people think of the new Paranormal Activity 2 trailer?

I know it's only a teaser but it looks like a retread of the first movie just in a different house, although I'm willing to bet that the baby will become possessed and the dog is probably going to die ('cos animals do not survive horror films with the exception of Jonesy)

I'll still end up seeing it as the first one was pretty intense and was one of the few modern horrors that managed to successfully create atmosphere and tension (as Moviebob said, the key is 'tripod')

So just wanna hear your thoughts really.

Also, ponder this: Is PA the franchise that will replace Saw as our annual Halloween movie

Well I'll give it this, it certainly looks atmospheric and interesting but I still don't know if Paranormal activity was the kind of movie that really NEEDED a sequel. Part of the success I thought came from how 'new' it felt to have a video camera making sure you see every strange goings on in that house and if we see a sequel of it then that means that it'll be doing the same sort of stuff again and as a result won't feel as fresh as before.
Plus with the spooky phantom standing there in the final shot it seems like they are dropping the original angle of the demon thing being invisible.

Still I might give it a look but here's hoping it doesn't end up as the next 'Saw'. I still reckon Paranormal Activity felt more like a one hit wonder than something that could be a full on franchise.

Hmm... interesting.

The first one was... a great scare. The movie itself really wasn't that great, but it was a fantastically scary film. A sequel... well, we'll see. There's only so much more you can do with that premise and technique... but we'll see.

You are very correct sir. Paranormal Activity is a victim of it's own success. If it had remained a cult hit rather than snowballing into the behemoth that it became we wouldn't have a sequel, but as this is the 00's any film which is popular becomes a franchise.

But on the bright side, at least Platinum Dunes isn't making it although I'm sure in 5 years they'll be doing a remake

Am i the only one who didn't find the first one scary? It was abit over hyped for me cos people where sayin "OMG it's so fuckin scary" but not once did it make me jump.

OT:It seems like they makin a straight off sequal hopeing to cash in on the other ones success.

Good for them, while I didn't find the first one scary i'm happy it had the success it did. My favorite part was that they didn't use the modern movie view of horror, which is gore gore gore, monster is behind you, gore, gore.

I wish them all the best in their second movie.

I had a lot of fun with the first one even though some stupid dickface posted a spoiler on a forum I visit. Was I scared? Not really. Keep in mind that hype and group hysteria has been used plenty of times to sell horror movies (I wasn't scared by the Exorcist or the Blair Witch Project either).

And frankly it beats the hell out of crap like the Saw franchise and constant remakes of 80s slashers.

I liked the first one, really effective when you watch it on DVD alone in the middle of the night (i suspect much less effective with friends, or with strangers of unreliable attention/interest in a movie theater)...

...but i don't really see why this should have a sequel.

Also I didn't find the first one scary in the slightest, all these new horrors that attempt to be psychological and what not are shit only work on thick people since my sister seemed to be quite spooked by it along with that "4th kind" or whatever it was about the aliens. Although if you get get some bimbo to go to the cinema with you to watch them, you've scored.

I haven't seen the first one yet. I've heard mixed reviews, between meh and absolute shit. Maybe I'll watch the first one, and then possibly consider possibly watching the second one.

A lot of those type of movies though... are just, shit.

"Oh no, someone has killed our dog in some way, who could it have been, and could it be connected to the random noises and such around our house?"

Though to be fair, that's nearly every haunted house-style horror movie that involves a pet.
Remember, folks: The dog is always right.

I watched the first one at my local cinema. There wasn't an empty seat in the house, but for the first time in my life it was actually quiet. There weren't any idiots on their phones texting or whispering! And it was infact one of the only films I have ever actually screamed at while watching it, but luckily pritty much everyone did :S

It really depends on if you believe in that stuff which determines whether you will find it scary. Paranormal based films are pritty much the only things that creep me out and although you know it isn't real, you get extremely paranoid when you have got home and your trying to get to sleep lol.

But a second one is a bad idea... All I can think of is Saw, a good movie that got re-made so many times because the creators wanted more money or whatever. And besides Saw 1... they all sucked!

The first time I saw it was at 2am with all the lights turned off and I was wearing headphones. It was an awesome experience, did a good job scaring the crap out of me. I agree with majority of the people here though, a sequel honestly shouldn't exist.

Yay! A thread about this movie, (even if it is the second part) where I can post without getting infracted for threadomancy! Okay, here goes my quick review of part one, which includes spoilers. If you haven't watched it yet, this is the official

SPOILER WARNING







Good: The interaction between the demon and Micah. Micah calls it out, the demon increases its attacks and Micah gets angry, calls it out some more. And so on and so on.
That's about it.

Bad: I'd been waiting for Boogitty boogitty boogitty Kelso moments from start to finish without ever getting one. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10qvsKWVewc at 28 seconds, for reference). Every "scare" is just sounds without explanation. You'd think that works well, but there should be a certain resolution, a show-off moment. It just gets boring without getting anything like that.

Bad: Three endings.
The one remotely scary ending is where Katie comes back upstairs with Micah's corpse, throws it at the camera, eats from it then realizes the camera is still there before lunging at it, her face changing at the last instant. The other two, a variation where Katie commits suicide and another one where she just sits at her bed until she is shot by cops who think she is attacking them (she's still holding the knife which she used to kill Micah) are just bad. Bad bad bad bad.

Bad: Acting. Not at all believable. Katie's clutching a crucifix, which shows that she believes in the christian god, right? Then why don't they just call the church for an exorcism? Hellooooo? Am I missing something here or are they ok with just calling a psychic but won't call an exorcist, even when it's clear that whatever's after Katie NEEDS an exorcism. Sure, that Diana person (the one who had the same things happen to her when she was growing up) had a failed exorcism, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't try it at all!
Gruh. This is just such an oversight!

All in all, it was entertaining but just not good. It was fun while it lasted but nothing makes me want to make a sequel. But did they smell money? Yes. Do they want more? Yes.
Is it going to suck? Yes.
