....

OT: I feel the need to once again reiterate that the series isn't even that good, whilst not as poorly written as Twilight it's still below average. When will we see baby names like Shadow, Durzo and my personal favourite Cthulhu!

Just for that, I'm naming my first son Azatot Azathoth.

Edit: Now if only I could spell properly.

I'm thinking Kylar would be a good name, if you want your kid to grow up and become a mass-murderer.

OT: No. Just no. Rue and Cato aren't too bad, but naming people after popular characters? I get if the names were inspired by fiction, if it just gave the name exposure, but there's a difference between "I like the name Katniss, I'll name my kid that" and "I love the character Katniss, I'll name my kid after her."

Although I kind of like the name Sabriel...

Its better than calling them Dovakiin or Princess Beyonce.
I would give anything to be named Dovakiin, seriously.
You'd give anything? I'm pretty sure it's not that hard to get a name change. Seriously, go out there and do it, Dovakiin. (see, doesn't hearing yourself called that fill you with a feeling of power)

I just hope there are no boys walking around named Peeta. It sounds like Pita. As in the bread. Oddly, Peeta is a baker, hmm. I suddenly understand.

I want to name my future children after video game characters. My boy will be named Garrett, and the girl Viktoria. Not super uncommon names, but they have meaning to me.

Oh my God. Now I have to do it. I want to see the look on peoples faces when they meet xXxeXtrimeDUBSTEPsnipezzzz420smokzweedxXx for the first time.

OT: The names dont sound all that ridiculous... Not traditional, but I cant see kids getting bullied for those names.

I mean, its a whole step above naming your kid "Batman" or something.
That sir(s) was the funniest thing I've read in a while. I will give you twenty of my boyfriend's dollars to name your kid that.

You win one (1) internet!

Don't go spending it all in one place!

So...you're saying I should move that from my top spot of names to give my child?

Lol, to be honest this is the kind of thing that helps turn me into such a complete bastard. When I see people naming kids after pop culture phenomenas or to win contests, I believe it's a sign that we need to start taking rights away from people. I believe that before you should have control over any other person, even your own offspring, you should meet certain minimul requirements of responsibility. Something that feeds into my occasional declarations of saying that we should sterlize the population and then reverse it only for people approved to have children, reducing the population is a big part of it, but also it can be used to put an end to this kind of crap.

Barring that, I'm wondering if perhaps there should be some kind of approval process in hospitals which baby names are approved through before they go onto birth certificates. Kids don't stay these little, cute, borderline objects forever, and names can have a huge impact. Some pop culture referacen, contest, or whatever is a very short term thing that can ruin an entire life, as can Mr. and Mrs. Hooker deciding to name their daughter "Ima" for whatever reason.

As time goes on the "sacred right to name your kids whatever you want" increasingly comes into question as people prove themsevles unworthy of that "right". There were attempts back in the day to say force Indians to assume proper english names, and so on, which have reinforced the reasons why people should have this right, but as time goes on I'm increasingly questioning this being an untouchable right. Ultimatly I don't think an approval process would matter to 99% of the people out there naming their kids, anyway as most people don't do garbage like this, but you have to be concerned about the welfare of children where parents DO engage in this kind of thing.

Of course to my way of thinking as soon as parents showed up and named their kids something crazy to win a contest or whatever, I'd see that as justification to call social services. As bad as that system is, it's probably for the best given that I doubt the parenting abillities of someone who would name their kid Trogdar or whatever. :p

All kidding aside, and while there is no guarantee it will happen, if we find the teenage "Baby Dovakin" engaged in a school shooting rampage or something, it's not like there will be much question as to what drove him to it.
Are you me? This. Im so tired of patents naming their kids idiotic things. Dumb naming is rarely ever subjective, it's pretty easy to distinguish dumb names from good ones.

Eh, it still beats naming your kid "Moo". Which, according to my newspaper's article on unique names, totally happened in this city.

But to everyone who's claiming that this is the fall of humanity (specifically RT-Medic and Therumancer), this is freaking rare. I worked at a grocery store for the last three days and saw many, many children, and heard most of them referenced by name by their parents. Of the hundred or so kids I saw, the most unusual name was "Parker". So I'm not as concerned as many of you seem to be.

6 Year old girl; Mommy, why did you name me after a two dimensional character from a book whose entire premise was lifted from Battle Royale?

22 Year old mother; It was that or be one of the 27 "Bella's" in your grade at school.

You know what I think of when I see the name Peeta?

<youtube=Zw9YBeU63d4&feature=related>

Anyway, I'm not surprised. The Hunger Games don't seem to be as popular as Harry Potter or Twilight, so far. Even if we ignore that, the fact that names like Harry, Ron, Edward, Jacob, Bella, Alice and so on are more normal-sounding than...Katniss and Peeta. Yeah, I know they're real names for something, but still. Serendipity is a word for something, but I wouldn't name my kid like that (Although I wouldn't be surprised if there's someone out there named like that).

Now, excuse me while I go name my kids Squall von Dart Touchdown and Altair Kratos Snake the Bard. Unless its a girl; in that case, replace Altair with Aeris.

Actually... I've met a "Serendipity" and a "Serenity", both women. The former prefers the nickname "Sery" (rhymes with "scary") and the latter likes her name.

Well, Serenity doesn't surprise me. Unless my memory fails me, Serenity was a Sailor Moon or something. Not that it makes it right, but I guess its had some time to settle in. The name, I mean.

But Serendipity? I can barely pronounce the name! *Sigh*

Rue is kinda a cool name.

I know somebody called Roux, which is pronounced the same.

At least it SOUNDS like a name, not like 'Harper Seven Beckham' or 'Apple tree' Or 'Peaches Geldof' (really fucking names... Seriously.)

THOSE ARE JUST WORDS IN ORDER, THEY AREN'T NAMES!
I don't know. It'd be cool for a while, like any other novelty, but over time, I'd rue the day my parents chose that name.

...I'll just see myself out.

Oh my god, someone named their child a name that isnt widely used and is a little bit odd! Lets all lose faith in humanity and ***** about it!

Names are boring, if there was more people called Starblood Deathadder, the world would be a better place. Instead we call our children Paul, or Carl, or Jane. What the fuck is wrong with this world when Jane is a better name than Starblood Deathadder? A wrong world, thats what it is.

I don't like Katniss very much, but Rue is a seriously good name in my opinion. Cato is so-so, good if you like roman military... because it reminds me of it. And i don't like military. Maybe we can pretend he's roman but not military?
Well I've always thought the more well-known Cato was Cato the Younger rather the Cato the Elder, who was an incorruptible statesmen and philosopher. Cato the Elder does have a long military background, but he was also a really good politician who made Rome's infrastructure amazing. So I guess it's more political then military.
