I'm not overly surprised.
Especially since my wife and I named our puppy 'Primrose' after a character in the same series.

...on the other hand, that's a PUPPY, not our child.

Meh. People are / always have been / always will be: Weird.

Young parents today are fuckin' idiots.
I'm pretty certain someone named his kid Luke or Leia when Star wars came out.....I'm pretty someone is considering it today...Same for Indiana, Harry, James (Bond), etc. Point is...I'm pretty much certain that someone was named with the name of a character from a work of fiction in the entire history of mankind.

Meh, nothing particularly wrong with either of those. Sure they're unusual, but they're not completely made up words or random nouns strung together.

In all honesty I'd take an unusual (not made up) name over a common as muck one. My parents chose the two most common UK girls names of the decade for me (Emma Elizabeth). There was always at least one other Emma in my class/year/sports team when I was a kid (I was one of FOUR Emmas in a class one year) and literally about 80% of the girls in my secondary school year had the middle name Elizabeth. At one point when there were two Emmas on the school netball team I got so sick of the confusion it caused that I jokingly started calling myself Fred. It stuck too- that was the name the coach and team used for me for the rest of the year. Even now at university, out of five people doing my course at my college two of us are Emmas.

I hated it, and I'm still not overly fond of my name just because it's so overused. I'm not saying I want to be called Trixybelle Dogbiscuit or anything but a bit of originality on my parents' part wouldn't have gone amiss :p

/rant, apologies.

This trend is ancient history. My mother was an elementary school teacher for over 30 years and witnessed every baby naming trend over that time. In the 1980s, it was soap opera names like Hunter and Taylor. My own mother's name, Nadia, came from a movie my grandmother watched when she was pregnant. And that's why my Italian-born mother has a Russian name, even though it sounds Italian and has since become a fairly popular Italian name.

But then again, how many names throughout the world are derived from the Bible? Mine is. I'll bet it's the same for a lot of people on this site. Really, a lot of us would have names like "Cato" and "Cinna" today if a tiny cult on the fringes of the Mediterranean hadn't become the state religion of the Roman Empire.

Oh for fuck's sake, parents, just name your children Bob or something. They'll thank you for it.

I see nothing wrong with this...there are far worse names and place to get ideas for names for your kids from. Personally I've kicked around the idea of naming my daughter Ziva[footnote](See: NCIS)[/footnote] if I should be so fortunate as to become a father in the future.

Rue is kinda a cool name.

I know somebody called Roux, which is pronounced the same.

At least it SOUNDS like a name, not like 'Harper Seven Beckham' or 'Apple tree' Or 'Peaches Geldof' (really fucking names... Seriously.)

THOSE ARE JUST WORDS IN ORDER, THEY AREN'T NAMES!
Frank Zappa named his son 'Moon Unit'. Not even joking.

After that, all other efforts to destroy your child's future seem feeble.

I was expecting worse...these names aren't as bad as what they could have been named. Isn't there also a character in The Hunger Games called Haymitch Abernethy? I wouldn't wish that on any child.

Also, with regards to that list you linked to, I think Audio Science makes for quite a cool name...if you were are a character in a rhythm action game.

"So where'd you get your name Cato?"

"Oh I was named after a character in this book called The Hunger Games. He's known for being a brutal bloodthirsty monster who enjoys murdering children."

Ok fine, maybe it's a bit more complex than that, but honestly, that's a terrible idea.

I want to name my kids with badass Greek and Roman names like Leander, but I don't want a stupid story for why I picked them.

Also, my girlfriend hates that idea and I'm sure I'll end up abandoning it by my mid twenties.

Hey, they might not be naming their children for Cato, the murderous bastard. They might be naming him for Kato Kaelin, the country's most famous mooch.

...Okay, y'know what? Don't name your kids Cato, people.
