Also, pubs. Pubs in Britain are wonderful. They are different from bars or clubs, in Britain more than other countries they are the social hub of the community (Less prominent in the middle class, but still) . True, I haven't been many times as I'm underage, but I go with my family sometimes and it's always enjoyable. The pub we go to supports the local band, will have many different sports on the tv for us to discuss or argue about. There are the regulars - people we always see there and are friends with just because we drink beer with them (me including, shh). I've recently met a man who left school early, got his qualifications in juvi (borstal) and now is slef employed and can do all sorts of jobs - every type of carpentry, mechanical things, pottery, you name it he's done the job. He has some pretty neat ideas, you might go as far to say philosophies. I love being able to meet these people and drink with them every time we go in. Every one looks after and knows one another in a pub.
That's probably my favourite British thing.
That's not an exclusively British thing. I'm English and I always thought it was, but Australians and New Zealanders do it even better than us. :(

When did patriotism become a bad thing? I'm not proud of my country, because I AM my country. My neighbors are my country. My government is my country. I don't care who we fight or what we fight for, my country is me and I will defend or assault who I see fit. I'm starting to wonder when people became so soft. When xenophobia was frowned upon. Loving your country more than any other is a trait seen so little these days.

I don't see whats wrong with seeing other countries as lessors to your own. From whatever country you're from, you should love it like family, and blood is thicker than water.

I have never...ever seen evidence to indicate patriotism could be a positive force.
Oh nonsense. Response after disasters, the will to fight and the will to protect are all things that are enabled and accentuated by patriotism. Japan's admirable and fantastic response after the earthquakes was largely due to patriotism. France's heroic defense of their country in WW1 was largely due to patriotism. Scotland defeating the English under the command of Sir William Wallace was largely due to patriotism.

I could go on and on for days here.

Patriotism and nationalism are very dangerous things and they can be awful forces of evil, but they can also do the opposite. They can bring people together who would otherwise be seperated. They can coordinate mass efforts of relief and defense. They unite different people together with a sense of community and culture.

Nothing in the world is solely negative. Patriotism is no exception.

What I like about Scotland:

It's history
It's ability to fry everything
We have learned from our mistakes and don't vote for the conservatives
The scenery, to me the Loch is just an everyday thing but when I see people coming here for a holiday I realise the Loch is better than it seems.

I don't consider myself patriotic by any means and there is a part of me that really doesn't like many aspects of the UK, but one thing I'll agree with you on is about the pubs.
I think being generally apathetic in the UK is our sense of patriotism.

Well no, patriotism on its own isn't bad at all. Neither is any other feeling you get--on its own. It's what action you take based on those feelings that make it "good" or "bad." I consider myself to be a pretty patriotic person when it comes to some things, but I never go around shooting gays or taking out my frustrations on the "unholy Spanish." There is just no excuse for that kind of behavior. Those sorts of people are less "patriotic" and more "bigoted and ignorant."
I know, thats why I put it as a negative thing. Unholdy Spanish was a sarcastic term I was using beacuase I heard about police raiding bars in Texas where a lot of Hispanic immigrants tended to go, as the police where being prejudice.

I've said it before, I think the true patriots are the ones who have issues with their country and make attempts to change it for the common good.

People who consider themselves "patriots" (mostly the gun toting rednecks who tend to be racists) aren't patriots. They're just bigots who've falsely idolized their countries.

I love America. And I'll ***** about everything that's wrong with my country.

There is a difference between patriotism and being nationalitic. The people who are the later take it too far. I enjoy being british, but not so much that I would squander someone who isn't. After all it was just chance that I was born here.

EDIT I realize this is a really shoddily written OP, but whatever.
For shame, Evie! :p

OT: I think Bill Hicks said it best, really:

"I was over in Australia and someone came up to me and said 'are you proud to be American?' 'Well you know, I didn't really have a whole lot to do with it. I mean, my parents fucked there.' In fact I think the American flag should be replaced with a picture of our parents fucking. That would really put us off. One guy came up to me after a gig 'hey my dad died for that flag!' 'Oh really? I got mine for a dollar.'

I hate patriotism. The last time I checked the world was round."

I'm proud to be English, embarrassed to be American.

Folks in general find it easy to point fingers at Americans, and stereotype each and every one of them, so I expect folks to get all cranky if anyone is patriotic for the US here. >_o

Nothing wrong with loving your country. Hell, even being blind to its faults isn't such a terrible thing. Just don't be a dick about your country being better than the next country, and don't go to war for it.

I think it's a double edged coin. It's great to take pride in your heritage and the heritage of the community you live in, but at the same time it also creates boundaries between other nations who may look down upon something you take pride in. I'm pretty sure it's stuff like this that starts wars.

Then again this will lead to my thoughts on getting rid of all countries and having one nation under the banner of 'Earth'.

Because of some of the dumb-ass things that some Americans do (IE: the NY Church as of late, Paris Hilton existing...).
I'm happy to be American, just embarrassed at the same time.

Personally I feel that patriotism is like a form of social cancer. It spreads rapidly and starts killing off cells and by cells I mean other races. But like religion, I tolerate it. Because it gives a great many people some form of fulfillment.

I can never exactly be patriotic when it comes to our country, OP. Constantly seeing the kind of complete idiots we churn out as well as the rudeness of a lot of British people, it just keeps me from really loving this country.
