Team Fortress 2 - wait, it has to run well on a low-end laptop? Never mind. Well, let's see here...
*peruses massive list of Steam games*

Evil Genius- Step into the shoes of a criminal mastermind that wouldn't be out of place in a James Bond parody. Build your very own secret underground lair (complete with minions and outlandish death traps), fight the forces of justice, and eventually take over the world. It's funny, charming, and a lot of fun.

Majesty: Gold Edition- a "hands off" RTS game, in Majesty you decide where buildings go and what type of fighting units to build (heroes). Instead of controlling heroes directly however, they wander around on their own, exploring the land and slaughtering monsters. You can offer bounties to explore areas or kill certain enemies, but that's the extent of your control. There are some RPG elements thrown in, as you can build structures and research upgrades that make your heroes more powerful. Additionally, they will become stronger on their own as they gain experience from fighting enemies. It may sound a bit strange, but it's actually lots of fun. Oh yeah, and you can create your own custom scenarios.

Dawn of War: Platinum Edition- One of the best RTS games I've ever played. Set in the so-awesome-it-hurts Warhammer 40,000 universe (read http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Warhammer40000 if you don't know about it), it's the perfect setting for large-scale carnage and bloodshed (and there's copious amounts of both, believe you me). Dawn of War focuses more on military units and combat instead of infrastructure. Instead of mining for resources, your armies gain the advantage by capturing control points and holding them, much like the Battlefield series. Before long the battle becomes a frantic see-saw action, with factions warring over key positions while churning out more units and upgrades. Battles are a sight to behold, with ranged units launching explosive shells and laser beams and melee units disemboweling opponents in gruesome ways. With a game this good, you'll be perfectly happy to let the galaxy burn.

Those are just a few recommendations for you.

Audiosurf's pretty good. Seriously, i'm not even into music games and it was still pretty damn fun and intense.

though it is not on steam and made after 2007, you should try out vindictus. It runs on my laptop just fine, which has lower specs than yours, and it is free.

Hey, it does not hurt to try.
How much does it cost? Is it a monthly subscription deal? I think I can run it, but I need to know money XD
It's completely free.

unless you feel like buying stuff from the item shop.
Wow.
-signs up-
Have to check this out, and plus it will help me confirm or deny the accuracy of Can I Run It? XD

Sins of a Solar Empire. Space RTS. Steep learning curve and some really long games but quite fun when you get the hang of it. Makes for some laid-back gaming. My record is a 16 hour long game.

Fallout 1, 2, Tactics. (RPG)
Planescape:Torment (RPG)
Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines (FPSRPG)
System Shock 1 (Google 'System Shock Portable') (FPSRPG)
System Shock 2 (FPSRPG)
Deus Ex (FPSRPG)
Arx Fatalis (FPSRPG)
Freespace 2 (space combat)
STALKER SoC (go nuts with the mods, just watch some of the graphic overhauls)

Just off the top of my head.

it depends what you're looking for.
I have these games:
http://steamcommunity.com/id/Fluffles/games?tab=all
And you can see what I like based off the hours (but the Half-life series should have like MUCH MORE that went unrecorded, +all the mods I've downloaded for Hl2 ;D)
Then I also have Bioshock 1&2, Mirrors Edge and some other ones. I'd recommend Bioshock, but ME is predictable and gets old pretty quickly.

R.U.S.E (Demo on steam) It's a great World War II RTS game.

All S.T.A.L.K.E.R games are pretty good. However Clear sky is apparently a bit weaker.

Eh, Sins has some issues.
I recommend Homeworld 2, since it's cheap and there are heaps of great mods for it.

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance is one of the best RTS games of all time. it's about $7 or so off Amazon [http://www.amazon.com/Supreme-Commander-Forged-Alliance-PC/dp/B000U8AYOO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1289562478&sr=8-1] (Doesn't require the original). There are some awesome mods.

If you like hack and slash medieval RPGs, get Mount & Blade Warband. it's fun. You can lead an army and take part in battles. [http://store.steampowered.com/app/48700/]

Agree fully with SupCom:FA. What didn't you like about Sins? Entrenchment specifically.

Yeah, pretty much anything made by Valve pre-Left 4 Dead (Half-Life, The Orange Box, CounterStrike) should be good. What are your personal tastes?
Oh yeah, I also recommend VVVVVV, an extremely addicting puzzle-platformer.
Just fun stuff that doesn't have crazy technical requirements.
Yeah, VVVVVV is just an 8-bit game, and addicting as all get out (and by "all get out", i mean "Ecstacy") There are tons of games like that out there straight from the manufacturers, usually for free. I particularly enjoy the Karoshi games (karoshigame.com).
