Team Fortress 2 - wait, it has to run well on a low-end laptop? Never mind. Well, let's see here...
*peruses massive list of Steam games*
Evil Genius- Step into the shoes of a criminal mastermind that wouldn't be out of place in a James Bond parody. Build your very own secret underground lair (complete with minions and outlandish death traps), fight the forces of justice, and eventually take over the world. It's funny, charming, and a lot of fun.
Majesty: Gold Edition- a "hands off" RTS game, in Majesty you decide where buildings go and what type of fighting units to build (heroes). Instead of controlling heroes directly however, they wander around on their own, exploring the land and slaughtering monsters. You can offer bounties to explore areas or kill certain enemies, but that's the extent of your control. There are some RPG elements thrown in, as you can build structures and research upgrades that make your heroes more powerful. Additionally, they will become stronger on their own as they gain experience from fighting enemies. It may sound a bit strange, but it's actually lots of fun. Oh yeah, and you can create your own custom scenarios.
Dawn of War: Platinum Edition- One of the best RTS games I've ever played. Set in the so-awesome-it-hurts Warhammer 40,000 universe (read http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Warhammer40000 if you don't know about it), it's the perfect setting for large-scale carnage and bloodshed (and there's copious amounts of both, believe you me). Dawn of War focuses more on military units and combat instead of infrastructure. Instead of mining for resources, your armies gain the advantage by capturing control points and holding them, much like the Battlefield series. Before long the battle becomes a frantic see-saw action, with factions warring over key positions while churning out more units and upgrades. Battles are a sight to behold, with ranged units launching explosive shells and laser beams and melee units disemboweling opponents in gruesome ways. With a game this good, you'll be perfectly happy to let the galaxy burn.
Those are just a few recommendations for you.
