in favor of "smart" devices and laptops,
Would people please stop doing this, drawing such a distinction between laptops and PCs? Laptops are PCs. They're just smaller and more portable. They are otherwise the exact same thing.

Decent Gaming Rig 600-800. And thats for some low end PC.
It's not for everyone, but it's cheaper than it's ever been. Most would see it as a worthwhile investment as you can do stuff other than games on a PC.

Not to mention you're going to need a television for that PS3
It's implied that everyone who is in the market for a gaming console already has a television, and we're talking about the price for a dedicated gaming console.

Even then, it would be much cheaper overall when you add in things like Valve Steam sales. The hardware is nothing without the software after all.

In response to the video:
A very well constructed arguement and overall nice video. I'd like to see more.

My thoughts on the matter:
PC gaming is not "dying". It's in a state of transition. In a sense, it's the old ways of PC gaming that are "dying".

Even 2 or 3 years ago, the idea that a laptop could be a viable way to play big games was unthinkable. The idea that smartphones could have a sucessful game market, casual as it is at the moment, was laughable. PC Gamers were bitching left and right that the triple A industry abandoned them (and to a lesser degree, they still do). PC gaming was forever tied to the image of the customized desktop computer, guys sitting in big chairs with systems bigger than they are running the games. But with laptops able to run the new games, smartphones being able to fill your smaller urges, and almost EVERY device able to go on the internet now, the desktop PC is losing it's purpose. It's not that PC gaming is dying. It's that the image of PC gaming is changing. Some just have trouble telling the difference.

As to what we all know started this:
In defense of Bob, I think that was the general idea of what he was saying: it's not PC gaming that's dying, it's that the day of the desktops are numbered. Some fanboys people just didn't look past the title and had their responses mentally prepared before the video was even half over. However, the way he worded it and set up the video (the title and pretty much the first 30 seconds) wasn't doing him any favors...

This entire arguement is the result of a failure of communication, some VERY poor choices of words on someone's (we know who) part, and PC Fanboys being WAY too defensive about the state of PC gaming (Seriously, this isn't the first time someone's made a statement like this. CALM THE FUCK DOWN).

First thats your computer, so no need to buy a separate computer.

Then upgrades. When you buy a PS3, you stick with what you get. And then you will have to buy the next one. (assuming there is a next one.) With a PC, you can upgrade the hell out of it. Not all at one time, mind you. Just pieces at a time.

And the games can be a lot cheaper. :D
And don't forget to add in the $1200 to $3000 (or more) for a decent 1080p TV to the console's price. There's a lot of people who still have their old standard def TV, and you just can't game on something like that. Then there's those of us who don't own a TV at all. You can't play a console without a screen, and TVs are a lot more expensive than monitors, partly because you sit a lot further back from a TV, so the screen size needs to be much bigger.

Edit: Oh, I see a few people have already made that point, sorry.

I never understood why people say PC gaming is dieing. Seems pretty asinine.

Maybe everyone is just jealous that we are the Gaming Master Race.
Can't disagree with that statement.

Also I think its important that we flame MovieBob so the escapist can get rid of him... I brought Premium membership to support Zero punctuation, NOT MovieBob.

Erm, no. You'll be gotten rid of before MovieBob will ever be.

Yes, it is thriving.

And Bob's video was constructed with poor logic and a lack of information (likely to support his own stupid conclusion).

And the Escapist's news room has taken to producing snide, uninformative and/or downright lying (possibly all 3) articles.

One more strike and I'll be writing the website a very stern letter with my new calligraphy set. Its got flowers on you know.
Can you dot the I's with hearts?

Thats assuming I would continue to flame.. no my good sir, that would just be moronic. I did mine and if enough does that then the escapist will get the message.

The assessment of $800 for a gaming PC is incorrect.

The question should be, "are you going to have a computer?"
If your answer is "no" then maybe it's valid.
If your answer is "yes" then you should look at how much more a gaming rig will cost as opposed to a word processor/web browser.

In a lot of cases, the added expense of turning a computer into a gaming rig is about $135 for a half decent video card.

how ever Im not sure how easy porting is I mean why dont we have red dead redemption or gears of war 2? priacy?
Well, Microsoft is going to take its sweet time to port gears of war. They sell the console and the game after all and they wont have anyone thinking "hey i'll just have to wait for a couple of months and then i can play the game on my PC and wont need to buy an Xbox!"
As for Red dead Redemption, Rockstar sure did a shitty job with the port of GTA4. And it has drm up the posterior.

Normally, i'd recommend getting the PC Version for most games if you can get it.
I may talk a lot about PC gaming being not *that* hard and inaccessible. Building and installing stuff isn't as hard as it used to be.

But to get GTA 4 running decently, you need to jump through several hoops. Rockstar really dropped the ball on that one.

Maybe they wont port red dead redemption because they are so paranoid. The DRM did nothing except annoy People who bought or rented the game (really really annoying) and was a ***** to get off my system. I experiment with Viruses and most of them are easier to remove then GTA 4 and all the software that comes with it.

Maybe the sales for GTA4 where lackluster. I could understand that after several warnings of this drm. Of course, Rockstar will blame it on the pirates.

Now, DRM would be a big fat target for anyone claiming that PC gaming is going to die. Counterargument would be that most DRM is useless and doesn't do anything at all. Wait a week or so and someone will have made a tool to get rid of it.

The Witcher 2 is apparently launching with no copy protection whatsoever.
Let's see how well this particular no DRM experiment pans out, shall we?

It'll be pirated to hell but still move enough units for CD Projekt to make happy gurgling sounds. Like a couple of other companies they focus on what they sell not vague proclamations of 'lost sales' and crying into their money bin.

Pfft. Games get pirated to hell regardless.

What I want to know is if the increased exposure the game gets will actually generate sales.
Heck, I know several people who have already pre-ordered the game because it doesn't have any DRM.

Heck, 3 of my friends bought The Witcher after I lent them mine.

Proliferation sells games.
