Hey guys.
Got a new build to pass by you guys.

Case, undecided. (Cheap $100-140, I'll grab one on the day)
GPU, Gtx 275
CPU i5 1156 pins 2.66 gHz Quad
Motherboard Asus, PP5 1156 pins
Ripjaw 1500 or 2000 DDR3 4GB
1 TB SATA HD. Seagate.
PSU 720W (?)
Sony DVD-CD
Sound card, if not built in to case.

What do you guys think? Comes out to around $1000 AUS dollars.
RAK's right on the money. I've got one thing to add, though: what brand is the power supply? all 720w PSUs are not created equal.

Something called SHAW. Sorry about the sketchy details.

I'm all over the place. My Steam account just got Hijacked due to complacancy on my behalf. My distrust in humanity has subsequently been revived. Anyone got any suggestions on how I can reclaim it? I already did the contact support business that they link you to.
I haven't heard of Shaw; it's probably best to go with a well-known brand like one of the following:
Corsair
Seasonic
PC Power and Cooling
OCZ
BFG Tech
Antec
(I'm sure there are others that I'm forgetting; look for an '80+' efficiency certification as a sign of quality)

You have my condolences about the Steamjacking. I don't know what you can do aside from going through Steam support, but good luck.

Edit: Google-fu indicates that Shaw PSUs [http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=653245].

Are people aware that if going over 3.5-4Gb of Ram they'll be needing 64bit OS?
Or just anything over 3 gb.
32 bit windows always reserves the 4th gigabyte (it can use) for things like graphics cards

Very aware. Very! VERY I SAY!

So, I was told to avoid the GTX 275 and go for an ATI 4890. That said, should I go for a 5770 instead? If I can't find anyone stocking 4890.
5770 is a good card, well I've got it and I've got some happy customers who've got it too ^^

I build a new just 3 weeks ago when my tax-return came (and subsequently, had any reasonable amount of money to spend) with only the PSU, monitor, speakers & keyboard/mouse remaining from the old set-up. (I plan on adding 1 of my 2 older HDD's in the box but haven't gotten around to it yet.)
Since I'm looking for any excuse of showing the specs around this is what I have now:

CPU: Intel Core i5 750 @ factory speed ( 2.67Mhz)
Mobo: Asus P7P55D LE
RAM: Kingston 6GB 1333MHZ DDR3
GPU: Asus ATI Radeon 5770.v2 (the smaller cooler casing one)
PSU: LC-Power Giant v2.0 Green Power 550w
Case: Nexus Clodius White

and around 1 terabytes of HDD's altogether with all the old pheriperials.

It's pretty sweet rig. Not perfect (see also: PSU) but it works, and well.

Yeah, I'm just a bit worried, because the GTX 275 has better frame rates (from what I've seen), but the 5770 comes ready for directX11. The 5770 is also $100 bucks cheaper here.

Would you strongly recommend your card?
A great card to overclock /w ATI's Overdrive function, lots of "legroom" in this card. ...if you have the PSU, which I don't atm and overall ATI's Catalyst Center is alot easier to use than NVidia's equivalent imo.
It's small yes but quite loud - emits a relativily high pitched "tinging" sound when you really push it. Case fans do muffle it a bit. I have my case open & all the case fans disconnected so it can be quite annoying without headphones.
Very cool (as in cold), shockingly so I'd say.

In Regards what you said about the 4890 - It's clearly the better gaming card imo but due time 5770 should get better overall when dx11 becomes more prevalent in the industry.
It's a hard choice between these 2 cards.

Hope That helps

Okay, I've built my PC
750W Antec PSU
Antec case good airflow 1 fan
P55-UD3 Gigabyte Motherboard
5770 ATI GPU Gigabyte
Corsair Dominator RAM 1600Mhz 4GB
LG Burner/DVD player
intel i5-720
1TB Seagate SATA HDD
XP 32 bit
1280 x 1024 res

All fans work. All features show up with software checks and whatnot.

However I have a major problem which I assume is due to the GPU.
Seemingly randomly (often when I am not running particularly graphics intensive functions) my screen will freeze. Including mouse+keyboard. Nothing happens. No progress on any downloads etc while it does this. Nothing I can do but a reboot gets it working again. Once I got a screen that was a series of green lines, vertically, that covered the entire screen. Both my RAM sticks are recognised and when this happens my fans all continue running.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have tried re-installing drivers.
Hmm most likely a driver problem. I had same problem with my ATI card yonks ago. Try to update your graphic card drivers. But don't worry if you have to try ALL available ones. My ATI card only likes to work with a specific build.

The answer is easy, buy the cheapest. DX11 is no reason to buy a card, Dx10 is barely on line so to buy a card on the off chance that it will help in dx11 is a waste of time and money. The 4890 is more than powerful enough to handle any games that are out there. Buy the cheaper one now and when and if the more powerful dx11 games come along in two years time buy another card then.

Stinkychops, a one gig card combined with 4 gig of ram on a 32bit OS? I hope you're saving for 7 64bit?

A few small updates to the builds, and a rewrite of CPUs is impending. I promise to get it done before nVidia puts out new cards :p
