I'm looking for a PC RPG to keep me off MMOs, but don't really know anything but the big titles.

Some things I have played.
I think I'm done with the Elder Scrolls games I have didn't get very far with either but about 30+ hoursish. Not really feeling starting a new character in them. (Maybe Morrowind.)
Definatly done with Fallout 3, played the hell out of that. (and F2)

Finished both Neverwinter Nights and I have the whole Baldurs Gate collection sat downstairs which I'm thinking about playing but Turn Based isn't what I'm really wanting.

Other than that there's nothing I can think of RPG wise until Dragons Age comes out.

Any gems I have missed? Don't care how old really as long as they are good and will last me a month. :)

Cheers for any input, will return the favour one day with FPS knowledge.

Really bored of WoW, I just sit in game and use it as a chat room for my friends.
Subscriptions run out, so I'm taking this time to try and stay away from it again. Don't trust new MMOs like Aion or Fallen Earth because of my Conan experiance.

Baldur's Gate is not turn based.
Well, I suppose technically it is, but the game only 'stops' if you pause the game, otherwise it just goes.
Which is why I TOTALLY recommend the BG series. And get the BGComplete MOD to combine both 1 and 2 (And their expansions) into one massively huge game in the BG 2 engine, which means higher resolutions and the character class kits like 'Bounty Hunter' and 'Undead Hunter Paladin'. I'm a massive BG fan, and can't help but gush and recommend them over and over again.

Neverwinter Nights really comes into its own on multiplayer. It's the closest thing to pen and paper D&D I've ever seen. The single player campaign by comparison isn't even worth the effort.

I have a boxset of them both but have only played BG 2 as I didn't find the mod until later on. I was pants at it and almost all of my combat was turn based when I played. Wasn't overly experienced with DnD but after both Neverwinter Nights I suppose I could play it in less of a turn based style. Wouldn't take long to sort out either... I'll probably give BG1 a chance with the "new" engine.

Edit: Din't read the whole post definently give Jade Empire or Arcanum a look over (you can set the combat in arcanum to Real time, turn based or a sort of mix.)

But if you like steampunk (who dosent?) I came across a little known gem called Arcanum reccently its much in the style of Baldurs gate I think its moraless the same engine but its incredibly deep and has some absolutley fantastic dialogue, no idea why this game got such little recognition. Well it's kept me entertained up to now anyway.

Oh and in a week theres a spiritual successor to the gothic series Risen to be released maybe worth a look, free roaming action rpg.

Baldur's Gate is real time. The rules are turn-based, but it plays out in real time, so don't miss a great game becasue of false information.

By the sound of your post, you missed pretty much most of the PC RPGs worth playing. Here's a short list of what to check out, this should keep you busy for a while

Mass Effect
Jade Empire
Knights of the Old Republic series
Planescape: Torment
Vampire: Bloodlines
The Witcher
Icewind Dale series
Drakensang: The Dark Eye
Gothic series
Anachronox

And that's before I start listing the action RPGs such as Dungeon Siege or Diablo...

EDIT: Another thing you could do is go to any major review site and have it list all PC RPGs in order of review scores. Should provide a adequate source if you lack any ideas on what to try next.

Yeah, I only have 'auto pause' on for when a character dies, a character loses a target (The enemy goes invisible or the enemy dies), and when the character's weapon is unusable (Out of arrows/bolts, sword breaks...which only happens in BG1). Otherwise, it's a free for all! Plus I like the control of being sure that my party won't get their ass blasted because they are standing around.

But if you've played through NWN, BG will be easy to pick up. The only thing you might have to adjust to is the class restrictions that aren't really present in NWN. I had a mage in NWN that wore light armour and used a double-bladed sword. You can't have that in BG. So it's a little trickier that way, but I like the BG series way more the the NWN series. But that could just be me.

It is turn based all attacks and actions happen turn based there just isnt a pause between turns so it seem continues.

If you don't mind turn-based combat there's always 'The Last Remnant'.

Jandau made a good list of games. I would re-emphasise; Anachronox, KOTOR 1 & 2 and Vampires - The Masquerade Bloodlines.

I've yet to play Mount & Blade, but it looks pretty good. On the slightly older end of things; Baldur's Gate 2, Arcanum and Planescape Torment are all pretty good. Arx Fatalis has a couple of flaws, but is still worth the play.

IceWind Dale? ;P Ummm I loved NWN(both 1 and 2 + expansions) multiplayer. That and some of the modules. That being said I casually play D&D and the NWNs wont come close to the geeklove I get from my 3rd ed books (go druids).

Instead of a PC rpg, why not go pen and paper? Seriouslyh ... PC game = 10 - 20 hours ... D&D pen and paper = possibly years of gaming ... and it can be any setting you (and your party and dm) wants to play.

I've never understood why WoW isn't geeky whilst D&D is :p So give pen and paper rpgs a go and see if you like the feel of geeklove XD 4e (current version of D&D) is pretty easy to pick up.

Planescape: Torment

Probably the most sophisticated and arguably best story in a game ever.

Y'know, I think well over 50% of my posts on these forums have had something to do with Torment. Mainly because people need to be reminded of this absolute classic game.

Yuck! How do you even dare to mention that filth! Dungeon Siege on the other hand, epic.
As for a good RPG that will last for a looooong time, I give thee, Mount&Blade. It's brilliant.

Apparently, Realms of Arkania is a tough but enjoyable series. Based on the popular German P&P RPG "Das Schwarze Auge" (or "The Dark Eye").
