With Community patch 1.72 Gothic 3 is decent. Melee combat is more skill based than luck based. You choose your character class by deciding which trainers you go to to use your learning points(acquired with each level up) on. You decide which factions you want to do quests for. You can carry as much as you want in your inventory (unlike diablo.) It's less than $20 on Amazon.com

Knights of the Old Republic I & II, Planescape: Torment, The Witcher, Mass Effect, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura.

Pretty much anything from Bioware or a former employee of Black Isle.

Titan Quest and Immortal Throne are also amazingly fun, and cheap to boot, but they are action RPG's as opposed to traditional RPG's.

Also Arena/Daggerfall/Morrowind/Oblivion make good MMO substitutes, playing much like a single player MMO with more detailed story and world setting.

I've heard a lot about Baldur's gate, but i've never checked it out. How much do you think it's going for nowadays? I'm going into the city tomorrow, so I'll check it out there.
I got all 4 (BG1 & 2 with the expansions for each) for £5 about 4 years ago. Not sure how easy it would be to find in stores though...

IceWind Dale? ;P Ummm I loved NWN(both 1 and 2 + expansions) multiplayer. That and some of the modules. That being said I casually play D&D and the NWNs wont come close to the geeklove I get from my 3rd ed books (go druids).

Instead of a PC rpg, why not go pen and paper? Seriouslyh ... PC game = 10 - 20 hours ... D&D pen and paper = possibly years of gaming ... and it can be any setting you (and your party and dm) wants to play.

I've never understood why WoW isn't geeky whilst D&D is :p So give pen and paper rpgs a go and see if you like the feel of geeklove XD 4e (current version of D&D) is pretty easy to pick up.
Dude, seriously? You think that PC games take 10 - 20 hours? You are doing it wrong. The only PC rpg that /I/ can think of that you can beat in like 10 hours is FABLE. Trust me, that game was done wrong.

Most of the games listed above take more than 60 hours. I know I've spent more than 100 hours on each playthrough of Baldurs gate 2 and Icewind dale 2. Playthroughs of Morrowind seem more like a full time job.

Also, the truly hardcore don't play 3rd edition, because they are playing 2nd edition. It's the dividing line between dungeons and dragons and WotC d20 system, which worked fine for the Star Wars pen and paper rpg, but was an entirely different animal from dungeons and dragons. It is one of the greatest tragedies of our time that a playing card company stole the good name of dungeons and dragons and slapped the brand name on their product.
Well, I dont know ... take oblivion .... main quest could be done (if played hard) in 5-6 hours.

Morrowind us an entirely different game to oblivion. Morrowind demands running around to millions of different sites ... Oblivion's fast travel, whilst less annoying, seems to bleed alot of the adventure of travelling around Cyrodiil.

And I prefer 3rd ed to 2nd ed. THAC0 was damned stupid. Plus I like the meatyness that druids get in 3.x ... 2nd ed they were gimped
d20 system just took the dice from D&D and changed their meaning. thac0 is a smart system that really makes sense, especially in the early levels where armor class zero meant that you had virtually no chance of hitting them unless you are really lucky.

Druids... should they be 'meaty'? I think they should be balanced. Hell, the entire class is BASED around maintaining balance. I'm all for the ABSOLUTE neutrality requirement of 2nd edition. Good and evil have NOTHING to do with what druids do. Druids in 2nd edition actually get the most damaging spell IN second edition: creeping doom.

Don't get me started on sorcerers either. Charisma is a stat for leadership and influence, not arcane powers. Int casters ftw.
