I for one think it's just stupid to seperate people based on various differences just to increase grades. This is the 21st century afterall.

Pretty sure that this is part of what caused, you know, the giant equal rights movement in the 1950's/60's.

Isn't this what the Tea Party guys want to do? I remember something about them wanting to repeal the Civil Rights Amendment.

Seperating them by academic achievement? Sure. Seperating them by race? No, I don't think that's right. Unless every single one of them needs the assistance, there's no reason to just group them all into one homeroom simply due to race. I'm sure that there were some of them that were doing fine. And what about all the white kids that did poorly? Wouldn't it be better if you grouped them in as well? Make sure that everyone is on the same level?

Segregation might be useful if used correctly, but this isn't using it correctly. Work with the kids who need it, not with the race that contains a large percentage of those kids.

The idea is... disturbingly logical. At least, compared to all the other policies schools use these days that are taken purely from the "Studies show" ideology.

However, the reason segregation was ruled unconstitutional is that, separate is inherently unequal.
Even if it were to boost scores, that's still numbers. The whole point of raising the score number is that higher scores correlate with happier, more successful students. So here, they're going, "These studies show that segregation correlates with better scores, which correlate with better futures."
They've completely lost sight of the fact that schools are meant to educate the students on an academic level, while also enforcing the ideals of our country. Segregating students, even if it boosted the students scores by 10%, would be blatantly against contemporary America's pursuit of opportunities based not on sex nor race, but on who they are as a person.

The article also addresses the fact that "Studies show" benefits from single-sex education. And yes, I did attend an all-women's college, but I'd like to point out that there are, say... 60, according to Wikipedia. How many colleges are there period? Most segregated women's schools have a historical background, going back even as far as a century back. These places are going to have more funding, and a higher standard than the national average of all single-sex schools.
And again, its the damn numbers people keep getting so wrapped up in!

Umm, first yes, this is unbelievably stupid, but how is this supposed to raise grades?
TEH NUMBERS. They tell us how to raise our kids to be perfect little credit scores.

Really? Come on PA, you were one of the leading states on equality throughout the history of the US.

Oh well. Its not that bad, and whats a few minutes. This is basically forming cliques, and its not like its the entire day. Its also not like the students are receiving inferior learning or anything else.

Besides, it listed worst schools and worst examples, so on the whole, I think people are over reacting and probably didnt read the article.

I view racism and its counterpart, political correctness, to both be inherently detrimental to the progress of society. Both deny fundamental truths. Racism overlooks good qualities of the target race/culture. Political correctness ignores the differences and often times demands the majority culture to give up its needs in the interest of preserving some false sense of equality that isn't really there.

To truly progress our society, we need to notice/accept differences so we can account for them to make sure that we keep things on an even keel. By ignoring differences or pretending that they don't matter, we just perpetuate the same system that's clearly not working (if the statistics given in the report are to be believed).

I'm glad they decided to ignore nay-sayers and try it for the benefit of improving education of these young people. If it doesn't work or has unintended negative effects, scrap it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Two things:

1) Just to get it on the first page of the thread, this segregation refers to 6 minutes per day and a further 20 twice a month. It's done voluntarily, by the students themselves, usually "by gender, race and/or language". The article does not seem to say what's going on during those 6 minutes a day, but common sense says it's not classwork and almost certainly not teacher-led at all.

2) I still dislike it. A true anecdote from when I was visiting colleges as a high school senior: At a highly ranked university near St. Louis, I had the opportunity to take part in an overnight program for prospective students. Early on the second day, I ran into another prospective student on the way to an assembly-style presentation after breakfast and we hit it off. Ten minutes later sitting down in front of the stage, another fellow approached my new friend. "C'mon over here, this is where the black kids are sitting." My friend left to sit in the other section.

Didn't see him again, didn't choose to go to that university, and it still bothers me when groups isolate themselves for reasons ethnic, religious, economic or otherwise.

6 minutes of segregation a day? SIX MINUTES! Outrageous!

...seriously. Is this REALLY a problem?

Interesting point the UCLA had though... same SEX schools seem to work out okay. So segregation of sex might work...

What the public school system needs are school vouchers. Let the parents pick the school they want their kids to go to, private or public.

It work because parents pick the right school for their kids. Fail schools should close down to save tax payers money.

No, what we need is a system that isn't afraid to call your kid stupid (Well, not STUPID).

Ideally, the school system would periodically test children and place them in the difficulty range. The top range would be taught at the fastest rate, while the classes below would be taught curriculum in an attempt to push them to the next class level before the grade finished. Even if this does not occur, the fact that they are separated by intellect will insure all the kids get the very best education possible for their brain size, without the class being held up to make time for, lets face it, dumb kids (Whether by nurture or nature, a shit ton of children are just plan stupid).

Thats my vision anyway. I'm sure most would think its horrible.

I guess they could give it a shot. It likely won't work, but it's never really been seriously tested.

If you'll excuse me, I'm a bit too busy to leave a serious comment. Right now I must beat my state's government over the head with a cold salami for not stopping this shit RIGHT NOW!
