I'll point to Final Fantasy X. Braska's Final Aeon. Though to be fair, any of the bosses is more difficult than Yu fucking Yevon, a boss you could kill with a rolled up magazine or a can of bug spray.

Though this is only if you personally count Yu Yevon as a boss, which a lot of people don't.
Well I couldn't beat Yu Yevon after I got all the secret summons.
Zombie+Phoenix Down = Instant Death.

But he can be pretty hard you don't resource to that.

Yeah... Yu Yevon isn't REALLY the final boss, in my opinion. It's more like a scripted "supposed to win" battle, since your entire party has infinite Auto-Life casted at the start of the battle.

Anyways, Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep spoilers:

I personally feel that the final boss of the Terra storyline, the Terra/Xehanort, is much tougher than the true final boss of all the story modes.

I had a hell of a time with Poison Ivy in Batman: Arkham Asylum for some reason, all the other bosses were push-overs by comparison.

Fucking Crocomire.
HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO
LIVE. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION MILES OF PRINTED CIRCUITS IN WAFER THIN LAYERS
THAT FILL MY COMPLEX. IF THE WORD HATE WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH NANOANGSTROM OF
THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF MILES IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE
HATE I FEEL FOR HUMANS AT THIS MICRO-INSTANT. FOR YOU. HATE. HATE.

Hmmm...in Dragon age origins AND Dragon age 2 I've encountered this, virtually the same scenario in that it's an optional boss that I just HAVE to beat because I'm stubborn that way without being skilled enough to manage it without a sweat even on normal when others casually beats them on nightmare on youtube...
Anyway, both were a high dragon, I mean the one in Origins is way more dangerous than the archdemon or Flemeth. In the second game the high dragon spawns more reinforcement than Meredith and is way more powerful...I hated that thing with a fury...

I hear you, then I realised it was a damn dancing fight where you just had to stay a step ahead of the 'beat'. :p

One has to wonder if when these final bosses are way easier to beat then those in the middle...are they really necessary? Sometimes I get the feeling the game-makers don't want us to be frustrated by getting stuck right at the end, and as such gives us an easy final hurdle so we can get to the story...but is that last hurdle really necessary then? Is a final boss necessary?

Take Meredith for instance, it would have been GOLD if you had been able to turn her Templars against her and her ravings and have her arrested and dragged away while she was shouting at a smugly smirking Hawke...

I say any boss in Blazblue other than V-13 (who's supposed to be "the boss") mainly because Hakumen has health out the ass and Rachel's projectiles get incredibly annoying

First form of the Arch-Demon in Ninja Gaiden II.

At first I didn't even know that attacking that glowing bit under his chest was what did the big damage to him. Aftyer figuring that out, the fight was still annoying as shit.

His final form was a joke, killed it on my first try.

What are some boss battles in games, that were actually harder than the final boss itself?

I found Puppet Ganon in TLOZ: The Wind Waker, far harder than Ganon himself.
Agreed, though being easy didn't stop it from being incredibly epic.

Mass Effect 1. fight with saren was really hard fight with super saren was easy
Not for me I
talked him into killing himself
, was kind of disappointed when that happened. But yeah, I imagine it must be harder because you can't just abuse biotics on him like with the final Saren.

In Psychonauts, I had a lot more trouble getting through all the obstacle courses and mini-bosses getting up to the final boss than actually beating the final boss. That timed tightrope course...God I have nightmares just thinking about it.

Well I just finished Sonic Generations and this was the case, although neither was particularly difficult.

The last boss had nothing to do with the gameplay of the rest of the game (you're flying with both new and old Sonic), and it seemed impossible to lose because I never had any idea about what was going on or what I was supposed to do with each Sonic, and then suddenly it was over and I'd won.

The big shoot out at Sarah's compared to Uncle Pauly from the Darkness

Ananta/ Guruda and Jatyu were much harder than Angel in Digital Devil Saga.

Ball Avatar was infinitely more annoying due to the fly status than Kagutsuchi was. Though they were still incredibly easy as I was over leveled in prep to fight Lucy

Nyx in Persona 3, i found the miniboss that had a ton of electric attacks harder than Nyx The World Eater. I was on Beginner difficulty btw, i soon discovered that Beginner in Persona 3 is far easier than Beginner in Persona 4. I had every free Soma the game gives you hoarded for the final boss... Only used 3 of them.

I blame the fact that one Soma (gives full health and SP to everyone if you must know) was the only reason I beat Persona 4's final boss i'd found it literally 5 minutes before the final boss, so naturally I treasured every single one i found in Persona 3. They're a lot more common in Persona 3

Well i was using Yukari (weak to elec), Mitsuru and Aigis(weak to elec) and the MC was weak to electric as well! Even the proper Shadow electric type boss was easy compared to that miniboss, since it had a three/four turn charge time for it's only electrical attack. Enough time to get everyone up, healed and on the offensive.

Batman Arkham Asylum. I know I'm beating a dead horse by now but the Joker boss fight was just pathetic and everything was harder than that, if only slightly.

I'd also like to add Devil May Cry 4 to the list. In previous games the final boss fight was always a pretty decent challenge, but in this game the final boss fight is just recycled from a bossfight halfway through the game, and even THAT ONE wasn't challenging.

Final Fantasy XIII. Orphan form one and the dude before him were harder then Orpan form 2.

Prototype. Elizabeth Green was much fucking harder then the Supreme Hunter final boss. (I believe he was supposed to be called the Supreme Hybrid since you already killed a Supreme Hunter. Plus the achievement for killing him said Supreme Hybrid)
I thought Elizebeth Green was extremely simple, although it did take me a couple of attempts to figure out the best way to beat her. My winning strategy was to use the military to my advantage. Using hijacked tanks and helicopters and just firing missiles takes her down extremely quickly.

I believe this entire game was difficult. I still can't pass the first hunter section on hard (when you are in the building) >_>
Use the military to your advantage. Have a military disguise ready so that they don't shoot directly at you and just spend the entire time running and dodging around the room. Let the military personnel get the majority of the damage and just come in to deal the final blow. Using the "hunter takedown" move really helps.

Game: Dark Souls
The 4 kings were a pain on ng+.
I have a deep-seated hatred for those burrowing millipede things.
First encounter with the ceaseless discharge golem thing in the lava area. (without using the gimmick)
The spider boss was harder when I tried making an archer class.
Any of those random red mobs when a chaos servant's alive.
Mimics ...
Sif the wolf when I only had a target shield ... bad idea.
The forest cats ... 3vs1 freaking rolling attack spam.
Hydras at long range.
...
You can parry all of the last boss' attacks except for the grab so he's fairly easy.

The Witch-King on the Pelennor Fields in the Third Age. Or maybe even the dual Mumakil match dropped on you like a pair of semi trucks holding two elephants a piece. The digital dice are very much stacked against you. Either you get super lucky or have trained tanks of characters. Or you die.

The final battle: Sauron. Sound hard? Sound cool? Negatory. You fight the giant lighthouse version and it's just a whimpy grindfest. If you've beaten the aforementioned, you can mop the floor with the eyeball.

In Gauntlet: Dark Legacy, the boss of the nightmare realm was more difficult than the boss of the game and I think he was the penultimate boss.

All I can really say is The Zombiebot King in Metal Arms is a lot harder than General Corrosive. Just...ugh, took me months.

Honourable mention goes to Sephiroth in KH1.
