I understand why somebody would use it when they are referring to an older post, but I see so many people quoting the post immediately before theirs, because obviously the average person doesn't know how to look up.

other things that annoy me are quotes within quotes, and people who don't remove pictures and videos from quotes, and people who quote a wall of text and refer to a specific sentence without pointing out which sentence they are referring to! seriously! snip your quotes!!!

I'm all for being clear about who you're replying to, but why not use an "@User" format rather than filling the page with things that have already been posted.

Quoting is good, it alerts me to the fact that someone has replied to what I've said. It also allows them to edit my quote and narrow down exactly what it was they are replying to. But if they don't that's okay too, after all it's not like I don't know what I typed so it's fairly obvious which bit they're addressing. Also it keeps the brilliance (or not) of my initial post intact for all to see and love/hate/not care about.

The only quote thing that bothers me is when a user quotes the OP. Reading an entire Thread conversation before posting can be tedious.
Basically this. I don't really mind quotes, regardless when the subject post was made. It's just convenient.

I do agree that people probably should snip images from their quotes. But I don't find that very essential either.
You don't find this annoying at all?
Not really. I actually get excited when I see the "1 New Message" thing, especially during workdays.
Same. You can't expect me to keep the page open and refreshed to stay in a conversation.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is where the shark was jumped in this thread. Thank you, and have a nice day.

I don't really mind quotes at all. It's good to see a method that makes it easy to see who said what.

Yeah, I agree. People quote others far too often and incorrectly. It especially annoys me when people quote the original poster when it is obvious who they are responding to or fail to snip a humongous post.

Oh yeah. I agree so much with this. I have no problem with anyone quoting me, or someone quoting others, I often happen to miss certain posts and see the post being quoted on the page I am currently on may open my eyes to the fact that the post is even there. However, if there's one post EVERYONE will read it is the first post. You don't go into a topic and just answer whatever you feel like. You read the post that opens the thread, make up an opinion on what to reply with according to this. There's no need to fucking quote it! We all read it. This is of course unless they quote small parts of it to actually debate a single point of the OP, but in general, yeah. Don't quote OP.

Whenever someone quotes me I think of that as a good reason to keep the discussion rolling since I don't really have time to watch every thread I've ever participated in.

Mad World said:

Actually the OP is more likely to check if his thread got any replies and doesn't need to be notified because in a way every post is a reply to him/her.

Yes that was actually sarcasm
..Youtube system no one knowing who replied? What?
All you get is a list of 10 comments or so where a lot of random users are arguing about something that was said 4-5 pages back and you can't know what that post said without actively looking for the post in question. Even if you find it there's no way of knowing if you find the correct post, or a different post by the same user. That's what he meant with his post. You see who replied, you just don't see what he replied to. I liked it the way it was before when the comments that was a reply to other comments were placed under the one they replied to, but Youtube has had several stupid changes the last few years...

Other, smaller, tighter-knit communities tend to get along fine without much use of the quote feature, but The Escapist is a pretty massive forum and despite lurking here quite a lot (and not posting half as often as I browse) there are very, very few people I recognize.

Now watch as I proceed to not be replied to ;)

I have proven you wrong! You haven't been lost in the tides as you're on the first page for the thread; and all users worth their salt at least read the first page.

I quote, even when the post I am quoting is just above me, so people know I have continued/started a discussion with/involving them.

I do however often trim quotes so there is no more than the quote I am mentioning and perhaps the one that quote was quoting.
I also often spoiler a wall of text or if I'm not responding to its entirety, select a few lines.

But I like quoting, it's helpful for discussions, rather than having to check back repeatedly. I usually just comment then ignore the thread, only returning to it if someone quotes me.

And I will do the exact same with this (perhaps after reading a few posts).

But yeah, you are right, if the post is on the first page you still have a chance of beeing quoted. SUCCESS

Nope. Don't agree one bit.

It's an organizational thing. It helps keep people in track with what points they are rebutting. Also to people late in the game, they don't have to scroll back pages at a time to find out the entire conversation. It's just right there.

I view it as a public debate of sorts. If everyone is screaming at someone else, how the hell do you know who's talking to whom?

Remember Youtube a year or two back? It didn't tell us who was talking to who. Complete pandemonium (although admittedly, it still is.)

I kind of like them. They help put people's random statements into context. Imagine reading a page of comments that just say:

"You're wrong"

then a few posts later:

"No I'm not"

Then you'd really have to read the entire thread to see where the argument started. The quote system allows you to read it from beginning to end in one gigantic post. However if your conversation gets too long, you should put it in spoilers to save space.

Btw, how do you make spoilers? Is it just something that you type?

Personally, I love being quoted. It lets you know that someone has responded to your post, thereby keeping the conversation alive. If you're trying to hold a discussion with one or two other people in the middle of a busy thread, then, again, quoting helps to keep things manageable.

In fact, the only sorts of quotes that bother me are people quoting the OP, because that is redundant. Except when done ironically. :p

Is it just something that you type?
you make spoilers with[ spoiler]Stuff in spoiler[/spoiler]

Currently finding it hilarious that this thread is full of more quotes than most average topics.

On topic, I'm completely alright with quotes. Sometimes chain quotes can get messy, but most people on the site clear a quote up whenever it gets out of hand.

Who else agrees?

I understand why somebody would use it when they are referring to an older post, but I see so many people quoting the post immediately before theirs, because obviously the average person doesn't know how to look up.

other things that annoy me are quotes within quotes, and people who don't remove pictures and videos from quotes, and people who quote a wall of text and refer to a specific sentence without pointing out which sentence they are referring to! seriously! snip your quotes!!!

I'm all for being clear about who you're replying to, but why not use an "@User" format rather than filling the page with things that have already been posted.

Nope I quote all the time, though I snip and remove stuff. I like that you get notified if someone quotes you for good or bad reasons.

OT: Sorry about that, I felt it was needed.
On a serious note, I am very rarely quoted so it doesn't bother me, however I could see it getting very annoying very fast.

Yea I sometimes just use blank quotes so that the person I'm speaking to gets the auto-message

Quotes don't annoy me. I usually just skim them so I know what's been quoted then read the post.

I could see why quoting the OP could seem annoying, but the same applies here, too. By quoting the OP, you send him/her a message which notifies him/her that someone was quoting. And that could be useful (for the OP, in this case) in order to know who to respond to.
Actually the OP is more likely to check if his thread got any replies and doesn't need to be notified because in a way every post is a reply to him/her.

I say change it to the youtube systems so noone knows who replied to what, because isolated posts really are the best way to discuss topics.

I have no idea whats you mean geK0.....

OT: I guess its like that to show exactly what they are replying to, rather than just the user.
Yeah this isn't a problem at all.
