Most of them are easy to counter if you know what's coming. If they keep using Super Mega Unblockable Hyper Attack #7, you can always use your REAL fists.

It does suck, and it is indicative of a lack of real skill, but it is easy to counteract in a well-balanced game (like Smash Bros.). Just roll out of the way whenever he does it, then charge up a smash attack to let loose when he turns back. You'll easily destroy him and he'll have to adapt and improve, making both of you better players.

Welcome to The Escapist! Don't troll and you'll be fine. Enjoy!

It can get annoying if you get stuck on a wall with nowhere to go but the pointy end of someones sword. Personally I just end of randomly smashing buttons until either something cool happens, or someone who actually memorized the combos dominates me.

It's a boring way to play, but it's not really an indicator of a lack of skill at all. Let's say I'm playing as Ryu and you keep landing on every fireball I throw because you can't time your jumps properly. Wouldn't it actually be dumber of me to stop throwing fireballs at you than to stand in the corner and fireball spam? If you keep falling for the same move repeatedly either your opponent is really good at setting it up or you're the one who's lacking in skill (or the game is just broken, but I'm assuming we're actually talking about decent games here and not stuff like MK).

Well I can't really comment because I've been known to do that too. Mostly because I'm not very good at fighting games and I don't play very many of 'em. I would think though that most attacks can be countered in some way so if he's just spamming the same attack over and over, just figure out the counter and use it against him. He'll figure out soon enough that he'll have to vary his moves if he wants to beat you.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of spammable moves in Brawl. Pit's arrows, Pit's annoying spinny blade thing, Wolf's sidesmash, etc. One of the many reasons I don't play Brawl, but instead Melee. I will leave it at that to avoid a flamewar.

If you can't beat the move then:

A: try not doing the same thing. Headbutting a brick wall=unproductive

B: Be equally annoying. Spam your funtastic move, especially in brawl where many people are annoying.

C: The game is broken, and you should find friends who play for fun not to win if they decide to take advantage of said broken-ness.

Nothing wrong with spam. I think it's worse to lose against it in fact.

It's only annoying if you let them do it to you over and over. If your friend only uses that one move, you know what he's going to do next, so you can get out of the way and attack when he's vulnerable. I speak from experience, as my younger brother used to do the same.
Pretty much stole my thunder. If his attacks are that predictable, just learn the appropriate counter.

This.

Except, of course, for several unblockable combos in 2d fighting games like MvC X.x

Ever get repeat tripped in Mortal Kombat(1)? It's impossible to get away from.

My dad used to do that to me all the time. I hated it.

I play Meta Knight a lot in brawl, and I usually try to play a varied style. But when I'm faced with the decision of mashing B or losing, I always mash B. And I'm really, really good at it. I don't lose when I mash B, I make my friends ban me from playing meta knight :/ So yeah, it's annoying as fuck, but at least when people lose they can use it as an excuse eh?

I dislike spammers, especially considering I always play DBZ:BT3 with my friend, and the only way he can play is spamming his energy attacks, while the "proper" way would be mixing it up with physical and energy attacks. Considering I play "properly", the second I get close, he accuses me of cheating somehow, just by trapping him in a really long combo, then firing an energy attack, making him lose about 1 1/2 bars of health.

But like everyone else says, just learn the attacks, and learn their strengths and weaknesses.

There are some games in which this comes up a little. Kirby's drop attack is not one of them. Roll. If you don't know how to roll, then watch the video in the options menu that teaches you the controls.

If people keep on making the same move, it shouldn't be so difficult to just attack at the right moment, would it? Random button bashers like me that even sometimes don't know what they are doing, now that is something to fear for! Because you can't get in our head! :p
Schrodinger Fu!

OT: Just stick to being of to the sides of the stage or just hang around parts where you can fall through. If he does the Brick or Final Cutter, he won't be winning very much in those places.

I sort of do this, I attack very quickly (unless I'm online in which case I have a bathroom break in between the game registering my attacks) so sometimes I repeat the same move sequences because I've used up most of the moves.

I dislike it when people whine about it more, people used to complain when i would play mitzerugi in SC4, saying I was spamming when I really wasn't (alot of his moves look the same, also he kept doing the same downward trust move with raphiel). When people do spam it is a bad stagey that only beets new players, it is easily countered.

Stop falling for it, and force them to adapt. A move is only as good as you let them use it. As for kirby's down + b, Just wait for the fall and charge a smash in the middle of the move, once he gets out, BAM ko at 50%+ (Snake's forward smash is beautiful for this)! And since you can still throw him, just pick Dedede, falco or anyone with a throw loop, and loop the ***** so he never uses that move again. I fucking hate smash and I know this shit.

Also as a meta game, repetitiveness can be confusing at some points. I.e. say your playing against guile in SF2. He is just spamming sonic booms. Hes thrown twenty in a row without doing something else. There sometimes is this voice in your head thats like "he threw out like twenty of them, no way hes going to do it again! Hes going to bait a jump-in or poke, no way he would be dumb enough to do it again." so you walk up to hit him, and BAM!! There is a sonic boom in your grill. Frustrated, you jump in. FLASH KICK! Now your just mindfucked. And your in no shape to continue.
The 'old man' tactic is lame, but you need to think strategically against things like that. You basically have to scare them out of using their 'one move'. Make them play technical, use shenanigans, be cheap, just make them play your game. And people can only play lame when they are ahead. If you have life lead, just run away and annoy your opponent to coming to you. Learn your timing, your counters, and how to adapt to your opponent. Basically L2P scrubs.
