After 8 years, a new main game finally is out. My excitement is palpable right now, as my copy should arrive in a few hours. I I'll update the topic with impressions and such once it does, and of course properly mark anything that may be a spoiler, including the MC's real name.

Feel free to share persona hype in here.

I never played Persona before, but DYKG video on the Shin Migami Tensei series has gotten my interest, do I need to play them before playing Persona itself? And do I need to play the other Personas to undertand the new one?

Persona is a spinoff of smt so while some shared elements exist no need for you to play either to understand the other exists. Persona 1-2 and 3-5 happen in the same world in chronological order but all you miss is easter eggs and nothin significant if you play em in the wrong order.

All that said, you really should play all of em, as they're amazing games.

Holy cow the game is awesome. It breaks a lot of new ground without feeling unfamiliar. A bit about the plot and feel with minimal story details :

So, as p3 was themed around death and 4 around the truth, this game is themed around justice. You run into a guy abusing a woman, stop him, then he sues you cause as you stopped him he was injured and you have to live a year in basically what is under a juvie parole situation, in a new school. Anyone who saw the trailers will remember the prisoner themes but to me those were too abstract. After playing the game though, I get it. Everyone treats you as a delinquent, kids in school spread rumors, teachers chastise you without you doing anything. The overall atmosphere is oppressive in a very unique way I've not quite felt before. The evil elements seem particularly detestable this time too, but no more on those as the game revolves around people and their malice.

As for gameplay, there's a lot of cool angles and sylish moves and the dungeons are more unique and not just rooms with different wallpaper. Slinks are now called co-op, they give you gameplay enhancements on top of persona xp. Even sneak attacks are refined, with a system reminiscent of stealth takedowns from the recent deus ex game, including a cover mechanism that looks as though you melt in the shdows.

Voice acting and music is awesome too. Joji Nakata voices your guardian. It's like Sol Badguy is your dad almost, beyond awesome.

*Sticks fingers in ears* No spoilers, no spoilers, can't hear anything about the game until February, lalalalalalalala

Quick summary, best friend introduced me to 4, then 3 after, 4 has better characters while 3 has a better overarching plot.

Preordered the SE version,
Are the characters interesting? Basically that's my fave thing about P4.

Still stumbling through P4G atm but loving it. can't wait to try P5.
Would also love for a PS4/Xboxone or even Vita version of P4A:U tbh

There's a lot going on with each, hell even the mascot char is interesting. And it isn't just the playable chars either. The world oozes with pesonality. Even the new velvet room helpers are impactful from the gate.

No.

If you'd like to play Persona 3 or 4 (Which are regarded as the best ones), getting them on PS2 is probably the cheapest and most convenient way, unless you already have a Vita, where you can play the PSP port of Persona 3 and the Vita port of Persona 4.

No, and you should count yourself lucky because Persona 3 was an incredibly tedious slog leading up to a really sucky end.

This game has a lot of respect for old school smt. Demon negotiation is back, eveyone has a mellee weapon and some sort of projectile firearm, harkenin back to classic smt. They integrate both with the usual persona weakness knockdown extra turn system (yes negotiation too) for by far the best gameplay in either series so far. Also finally we get curse damage nukes and not just mudo style IK moves that never work.

*Sticks head out of sound proof bunker*

Here's hoping five nails both.

*Sticks head back in. Closes vault door. Closes vault over other vault door. Enters through spoiler decontamination chamber. Puts earbuds in. Puts sound mufflers on over ears.*

Every game is a stand alone title. However, they occupy the same universe, so certain scenes pack an extra emotional punch if you've played the other games. If you decide to replay the old games then you can safely skip the first game. The second one had a pretty great plot, while 3 and 4 introduced a lot of the game mechanics and style the series is now known for.

I got 5 that says the next Persona game is going to take place in a prison of some sorts
This one does already in a more metaphorical sense, or in a literal one as far as the velvet room goes lol. The themes are of justice this time around.

I was making a Jojo reference this might be a coinsdence but personas 3-5 are very similar to the plots and themes of jojo's 3-5

Persona 3- A stoic teenager stops a demon from taking over the world
Persona 4-Students try to track down a serial killer who targets women in a small town
Persona 5-Teenagers being criminals to attack a larger evil in the form of an organization

How's the dungeon design? The bland, randomly generated mazes were the worst part of 3 and 4, but 5 looks like it has massively improved on that front?

Yeah the game plays like an rpg batman arkham asylum with cover based sneak attacks instead of just runnin behind a slow ass shadow and hitting it on the butt and a third eye bat sense style of searching out cover spots or treasure hidden in jars and crates (which you gain through the igor social link/co-op). Also if the enemies spot you too many times you have to cut your run short so you wanna hide well, which isn't hard. There's lots of jump points and ladders and crawling through vents and all that stuff, I have only seen one dungeon and bits of what I assume is a second due to timeskip shenanigans so far cause the game is really long but yeah, it feels as though you really are a phantom thief from a fairy tale infiltrating a very well guarded cache hidden inside a castle.

Bumping for an update, so I finally beat the first big boss. The game handles bosses in a way I just have to describe. You fight them normally up to a point but then you get a prompt for a "plan". This means your win conditions change from "reduce their hp to zero" into narrative-specific goals that are themed to match the story and battle. I won't spoil what exactly your options are but I will say the game makes boss fights stand out in a unique way.

I like the idea of negotiation but in the games that I played (SMT Nocturne, Persona 1 and 2) I always found it really tedious. Have they changed the system at all or is it still answer random questions/throw money at them and hope they join you?
