PS:T put me through the wringer. I hated the Practical One SO VERY MUCH. I couldn't even try to be evil. Hell, I CRIED at the end, and I got what was by all rights the best ending.

(Also the most badass ending. <3)

I'm a JRPG fan for the most part and love the stories and plot of the older Final Fantasy's before Hironobu Sakaguchi left Square-Enix.
You speak some truth.
Up until and including IX the FF stories were great.
RPG games tend to have the greatest story lines.
Some others:
Oddworld games
HALF LIFE
KOTOR
Oh, I completely forgot Half-Life. Now there's an outstanding plot for ya'
Wrong
Valve doesn't make outstanding plots.
They take the most generic, used all to hell plots and makes them believable.

Portal :D

Love how a string of seemingly meaningless tasks evolves so damn well into a deep storyline.
I really liked Portal, but I wouldn't exactly call the plot deep. It might tie into Half-life 2 Episode 3, but that really only adds depth to Half-Life, not Portal.
The plot was plenty deep when you consider the game as a whole. On the surface it may seem like it's just a game about a crazy robot, but it's actually a pretty good allegory for a bad relationship. There are a couple essays about this on the web if you're interested.
I've seen a few essays on it before. I still think it was just a simple story, but very well written. Still an excellent story, just not that deep.
I love Portal as much as the next person but tell me specifically what was "deep" about it...hell tell me what the story was beyond "you're in an experiment and are being lied to about cake by a psychotic computer"

There's not really a story =/ some good monologues, but it's mostly pure gameplay, which is a good thing IMO.

I don't care what Yahtzee says: I still think that the plot in the Metal Gear Solid series is the best EVAR!
I'll go with this. Plot is amazing, how it's presented can be up for discussion. I don't think Yahtzee disliked the plot, just how it's presented and told. There is just to much to it and around it presented at the same time.
I agree. I don't think it's the plot that people rip on, it's the presentation. There are just way too many corny twists that don't end up important at the end, and though I can forgive long cutscenes, the ones that they have just have way too much inconsequential dialogue as far as aiding the story goes. It just feels like nobody ever took a second draft of a lot of the scripts where it was needed. Its overall plot, with certain political themes is quite good, however, and the characters (minus Raiden and his girlfriend) are interesting and well-written

Overall, though, I think my favorite story has been the Half Life series'. I actually enjoy not knowing what's going on, because the suspense draws you in. Right now, I'm worried about where Barney and Judith are, what's going to happen with Alyx after the end of Episode 2, the G-Man's overall role in the story, and the status of the combine and all of that. It's refreshing to just see it from a silent everyman's eyes, and not have little plot points fed to you by long cutscenes.

Planescape: Torment.
Fallout 1.
Deus Ex.

The World Ends With You is surprisingly good.

The Warhammer and Warhammer 40K universes are amazing.

The world in Mass Effect is outstanding, but the actual plot of the game is only so-so.

I say this every time this comes up, Red Alert 3 has the best plot ever. The Soviets invent a time machine, go back in time to kill Einstein so the Allies don't have technological superiority in the future. Best plot EVER!

Eternal Darkness had a good plot, but the way it was told made it excellent.
Agreed. Some of the "flashbacks" were a little lame but I still loved the entire game through-out. Not many people (at least amongst my group of friends) seem to like it.

Ahaha yeah. Seriously though, I've played this through 3 times (for each magic thing). The first time, I knew the bath thing was gonna happen, I expected it and it didn't bother me. The second time through, we played it a few montsh after, it made me jump LOADS. Was so funny.

Baldur's Gate Series.

For me, it has the best story, characters, and quests of any RPG I've ever played, ever. It remains my favourite RPG and game series of all time.

Yeah, I didn't mean I actually KNEW it was going to happen. I just thought it was really obvious :p Was just funny that I didn't actually have the same trail of thinking the second time around.
