This is the best news I've heard about the film industry in a while. I adored the LOTR Trilogy and I adore Peter Jackson, he has such a fantastic vision of Middle Earth and with him directing The Hobbit, its pretty much confirmed that they are going to be amazing movies

Good news, Ian MacKellen has been confirmed to return as Gandalf. Only he could return to the role really. Although Christopher Lee wont be returning as Saruman, as he says he's too old to fly to New Zealand now. Sad news.
hmm that shouldn't be much of a problem for the adaptation of the book The Hobbit, since hes not in it
My thoughts exactly. Infact, Gandalf, Gollum and Elrond are preety much the only characters who's actors would have to return to keep continuity between films. Bilbo is younger in Hobbit, which requires a younger actor, while the rest of the character cast is completely new. It will be interesting to see who exactly gets picked for those roles.

Anyway, great to hear Jackson is going to direct the films. While I am sure die-hard fans of Tolkien will disagree, I think he mostly did a good job adapting the books. I just hope he won't resort to the use of Hollywood tactics this time around. The Battle of Five Armies is dramatic enough in itself, it doesn't need "spicing up" with tactics that want to make you facepalm.

As long as Weta Workshop is on the case, I'm all over that.

My concern is... how in the world is there enough plot for 2 movies???

There's two movies coming out, and its most likely that the White Council will be featured as in The Hobbit Gandalf goes to council with them, and they go to Mirkwood and fight Sauron out of Dol Guldur. So Saruman was a heavy presence in the book, but he just wasn't present in it.
If that's true, it's easy enough just to build a set near where he lives. I mean, they did do a lot of set recreation in the trilogy. It wouldn't be too hard to green screen him in or something.

In my opinion Peter Jackson is the only one that can direct The Hobbit and make it great. This is great news that he could be directing it and I cannot wait for the films to be come out.

I'm very excited about these movies. And making it into two films is actually a cool idea. For those who haven't read The Hobbit (library -->), the journey of Bilbo Baggins is a small and isolated part of events on a much greater scale than he truly understands. These larger events set up the action for The Lord of the Ring but are never narrated in any detail. It's as if Tolkein wrote this adventure novel, then right at the end added, "By the way, there also was a grand international campaign to defeat the Lord of Shadow in his dark forest stronghold." Actually seeing those events narrated in detail should be endlessly fun. It will also require a host of original characters and settings, a first for this series.

EDIT: On the other hand, making Bilbo's journey a two-parter sounds like a terrible idea. I hope one movie focuses on his journey and the other on the broader war. If they try to do both over two movies, it will seem disconnected and anti-climactic.

I agree, just as long as it still has a male model skateboarding on an orc's shield while shooting arrows at unlikely speeds into enemies within unpractical proximity. And I really hope they have a lot of shots where the camera follows a traveling projectile in slow-motion. You just never see that, you know? It's so fresh. And the combatants better spin around a lot and not hold their weapons properly. Fight scenes shouldn't just be choreographed, they should be conspicuously choreographed. If they aren't, fight scenes create the illusion of danger, which we obviously don't want. So yea, as long as they do all that, and don't use any Hollywood tactics, it should be great :).

I did like the movies, but Legolas was like the 'Hollywood tactics' character. Won't miss him, hope they don't replace him, hope he dies in a fire. Every time something cool happened, Legolas showed up to ruin it. The Oliphaunts were really cool until Legolas climbed one with his swords, killed it by doing nothing, then skateboarded (again? really? amazing) down it's trunk. Peter Jackson faceplam. His face. My palm.

Jesus he is not looking sharp.

Well, uhh.... Good news indeed.
Really? He looks like he's lost a TON of weight to me. I guess he does look somewhat bedraggled though.

Oh well, who cares what he looks like because all that matters is he's probably MAKING THE HOBBIT!!!

well there goes any hope that this would be a decent movie
I pretty much lost hope when Del Toro was no longer going to direct it, it was pretty likely they were going to get in some talentless hack to replace him.

First, Peter Jackson directing another movie in the LotR universe? Yes please.

Second, 3D is a crutch, people! WE DON'T NEED NO STINKING 3D!
I couldn't agree more, on both points. 3D is a gimmick that adds nothing to cinema.

I'm so sick of hearing people go on about how it will be good NOW, what NOW that it is to be directed by Jackson!? Don't get me wrong I love it here at the escapist, and also, not to sound like a head-up-his-own-ass-film-geek, but Guillermo Del Toro is one of the greatest directors in recent history and while Jackson's trilogy certainly boasts epicness and is and always will be a masterwork in cinema. Toro's artistic take is unbelievable, Pan's Labyrinth anyone? It would've been nice to see HIS interpretation of the Hobbit, and it would've seemed fitting as the tale of the Hobbit is more interpersonal than its followups. I'm sure it will turn out just fine under Jackson, but its like a lot of you guys don't even know who these people are and what stance they have in their field. So really, why the hate for Toro? If you didn't like the Hellboy films, and honestly I didn't either, just not my thing I suppose, watch the Devil's Backbone. I'll admit that he doesn't have as boastful a resume as Mr. Jackson but it would've been an interestingly refreshing project. Shame.

Personally I think he should have been director from the beginning.

And by the by, The Hobbit is going to be one movie, the second is going to be a bridge between The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings based on god knows what.
