Someone mentioned to me today that 1337% of Pi = 42. Sure enough, I ran the numbers and to two decimal places, Pi * 13.37 = 42.00.

For Discussion: Share something that when someone said it to you, you were like "really?" then you found out it was true and you were like "holy shit."
Dude, no, it makes 42.003093778495535598245542034447 silly!
for your information, only the first 2 digits after the decimal count. so its 42.00.

and yea I know its sarcasm. Im just being a dick.
No, you're not being a dick, you're right; significant digits.

Not according to excel :S

But the windows calculator agrees *Scratches head*

It's really a weird concept, multiplying 0 with itself 0 times... *Brain hurt*

Really.

Like, really?

EDIT: The internet suggests that this is in fact not true. That doesn't surprise me. Meh.

Oh god it's like that "what happened to one dollar?" thing!

My mind is going to explo
There is a prize behind one of three closed doors. You pick a door, then one of the OTHER doors you DIDN'T pick is opened, the prize is not behind it. This leaves two doors, the one you picked, and the remaining closed door. One houses the prize, one does not. You are asked if you would like to swap your selection.

Should you?

;D

ohh! does anyone remember the one about the two guys, where one always lies and one is always honest!?
Both those are not really hard (the first one is not really a question of logic but a question of character). The second one is the easiest riddle ever if you know what to ask.
2+2=?
with the first one. statistically, it is always better to swap.

and I think the two guys one has a stipulation where you can only ask one question. (I really can't remember)
Statistic doesn't help much and scientific research (look for the matter on TED.com) shows that if we stick to our decisions than even if the "prize" is not in that specific box eventually we will be happier with it than if we did switch.
And I want to be happy.

As for the other question I think you are correct about the "only one question" thing, that's why I suggested

2+2=?
Since true answer is obvious and false answer is anything other than 4 :p.
Unless the "truth" guy has a doctorate in mathematics and proves to you that

2+2=3
Than you are screwed...

2 + 2 = 5, for significantly large values of 2. ;)

Yeah. No. if you had any mathematical sense, you wuold see that answer is stupid. If Pi*1337/100=42, it would be the same as saying that PI=42*100/1337 or PI=4200/1337. 4200 and 1337 are both integers, so 4200/1337 is a rational number. PI is not a rational number (mathematically proven). Yeah, not impressed with bad calculations based on aproximations.

more ontopic, learning that a terrible teacher from my high school was hired at my college. That left me with a face of utter desibelieve.

Lots of things in life are irrational. Women, for example. Doesn't mean they can't be improved be the addition of some l33t.

.99999999999... equals 1
1/3 = .33333333...
3 times .333333... = .9999999...
Therefore 1/3 times 3, which equals 1, equals .99999999...

To be more specific water crystallizes when it freezes and the structures created are less dense than the liquid which is why it floats.

Im sure there are more things than water that do that.
Water is not unique in this regard but this property of water (itself a result of the polar nature of the water molecule - that is, the molecule, thanks to the mass of the oxygen atom, has a positive "side" and a negative "side"), is fundamental to life existing on earth. Indeed, were it not for the fact that water is a polar molecule, life as we know it would not exist.

For your sake and mine, Sim, let's hope the frigging leet-speakers don't take this as anything more than a fun factoid. 'Cause I swear, if I hear about a Cult of Adams showing up with people chanting in leet, I am leaving the goddamn planet and never looking back.
