...Hold on. This is bothering me.

Fratricide ---> brother murder
(Frat = brother...well, I know 'frat' isn't the straight-up Latin derivative, but you get the idea.)

Patricide ---> father murder
(Pater = father)

Regicide ---> King murder
(Regis = king)

Deicide ---> God murder
(Deus = God)

Homicide ---> Man(or woman) murder
(Homo = man)

AND YET:

Suicide ---> Self murder
(but sui= pig)

???????

It should be autocide, shouldn't it? Because 'suicide' should mean 'pig murder'...Weird!

Any thoughts or corrections to my silly, silly ways?

Thats why I always thought grammar and spelling are irrelevant, because the english language do not follow most of its own rules.

Everything I know is a lieeeeeee, a lie I say!

OT: Sounds right, but, English isn't my first or preferred language, and I'm not so good with Latin either so, eh, what do I know....

You raise a valid point. But, after all, the English language never follows its own rules, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

Also, according to Wikipedia, it comes from the Latin term suicidium from sui caedere, which means to kill oneself.

I'm pretty sure sui means 'oneself' roughly. So, to kill oneself makes sense.

Also, Deicide seems to be based of deity rather than Deus, though they are basically the same thing.

What's that quote from Animal Farm, "They looked at the pigs and the people, and could see no difference"?

Yeah, no. Sui = of itself. Thus "Sui Generis" meaning "of its own kind" or "unique."

The Latin for for pig is "porcus," so "Pig Murder" would be "Porcicide."

And now you know.

Also, where the hell did you get "sui" as a word for "pig"?

Homo, means "the same" I believe.
Homosexual = being attracted to the same gender
Homonym = spelt the same with different meanings (I think)
Homophone = sounds the same but spelt differently

I spose it may have a different meaning in the context of Homo Sapiens, but I would assume homicide refers to killing another human being, ie. someone the same species as yourself.

Oh, both 'deicide' and 'deity' share 'deus' as their roots; that was never in question.

Actually, you're right! A friend of mine who picked up far more Latin than my humble self in High School cleared it up for me. I figure, then, I must have gotten the Latin and Greek mixed up again (it happenes more often than you'd think). 'Sui' is 'pig' in Greek, I believe; and 'sui' in Latin is a variation on his/her/it - self. XD

If you feel the need to correct peoples grammar or spelling then go where it?s appreciated, a library, language course, maybe even a dictionary society.

If you chose to do it on a gaming forum then, IMO you're a pompous twit who should know better.

So, no I couldn't care whether suicide should be something else.

I've heard of farmers calling for pigs by yelling "Su-eee" or something, don't have a clue where it comes from though.

"Homo" is the Latinate form of "Man", therefor Homocide is, literally, murder of (another) man. Man, in this case, meaning human.

Homosexuality is using "Homo" as a Greek word, meaning "The Same," which is why there's Homogenized milk, Homogeneous cultures, etc.
