Corner Gas (A tv show made by the company who owns the website in the link) had something like this.
I looked everywhere but I can't find a video clip.
I just remember it was an episode called "An American in Saskatchewan"

If the pile of wood was piled in a way that it cast a shadow that looks like a person or something cool like that then yes I'd say art (like this heap of trash is http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_NpINLHeo8rM/Sx5QJwO1g3I/AAAAAAAAvnE/SPcnoART8jg/s400/6.jpg). But it was just placed there, in in a pile that is nearly identical to the pile of wood in the back yard of my old house. That's not art, that's

*sigh* yes its art. If one deems it to be art it's art.

Art does not mean good. Art can be a lazy reeking pile of shit. That doesn;t mean it's not art.

I don't know why people think art has to be good, or that by virtue of it being named art if you don't like it it's only because you "don't get it".

It's art. That's all.

This is not art lololololololol!
These 2 perfectly summed up my opinion of this thread. Just because It's not a painting or a video game or a sculpture of a symbol doesn't mean it's not art. I have no Idea why people think art=good.

I like how everyone is all like "I could do that".

Well you didn't and that's the diffrence. It's easy to say so after you've seen his work.

TL;DR: Story goes some guy hauls away some wood from an unmarked pile of wood. Turns out its an art sculpture called "Deadwood Sleep". Artist was paid $5000 dollars to build said sculpture.

Is this art?: I personally don't think so. I can pile wood together too. I see piles of wood in front of some homes occasionally but is it art? I guess its not art unless you call yourself an artist and start piling things together calling it art.

I know what I'll do!
1. Call self artist
2. Spit on canvas
3. Call it art
4. Profit
You figured out the third step, congratutlations, everybody's been having a lot of trouble with that one.

OT: No, I feel that all art requires some skill to create. This is why I feel games are art and throwing paint haphazardly on a canvas isn't.

(Incoming art-wanker spiel in 3... 2... 1..) I don't believe that art is an either-or proposition. I agree with Scott McCloud's definition of art as anything done that's not related to survival or reproduction. And yes, I know that 'art is subjective' is the rallying cry of the terrible artist, but come on now.

Are you calling the fine members of this forum hypocrites?

P.S. Bonus points for the OP having an avatar clearly influenced by Andy Warhol.
Why yes, yes I believe I am. I do it regularly as it goes. It's not everyone but it really highlights how self serving the arguments for 'games as art' are when our super-special definition of art is exposed as 'whatever is convenient for validating my lifestyle'.
Oh come on dude. It's a pile of wood.

That seems like way too broad a definition...

So killing people is art if you're not doing it for self-defense? Forget Van Gogh and Picasso - Hitler is definitely the greatest artist of all time in that case...

I can't believe our own money was wasted on a guy who piled a bunch of wood together.
I've seen the news story, and the artist is a friggin' nut case.

Yes, it's art. More specifically it's shitty, talentless art. It is in fact art though.

And games are pixellated murder simulators. Part of debating this topic is learning to see things from an objective angle.

Example: This is a pile of wood. What was the shadow like? was there detailing on a facing? I mean technically even the Venus DeMilo is a pile of rock.
No, seriously, this is literally a pile of wood.

You're looking for some hidden meaning that isn't there, but since he tells people it's there, they believe it is.

One of the world's oldest and most embarrassing scams. Convince people that something is brilliant and they just aren't "seeing it the right way". You know the story of the Emperor's New Clothes right?

NO, it's not art. I'm sorry, but just cause you're conveying a message that is supposedly deep and pholosophical with your pile of wood, it doesn't mean it's automatically considered art. A pile of logs is not art. Dadaism or not.

I personally see art as the creation of something new, evoking emotions or thought in the viewer. Simply putting a bunch of logs in a pile just doesn't count. There needs to be an act of creation involved.

Disclaimer: Only my opinion. If you think art can be anything, you're welcome to. I don't.
