What are your thoughts on this? Personally, I think it's a big AMERICA! FUCK YEAH! (to certain humor extent) moment. Should, if more problems rise other countries do the same?

Any thoughts?

EDIT: Here is the link to the Daily Show episode, you can google search the story at any other news site.
It's about 5 minutes in.

Bizarre, I heard theres been more attacks on US freighters from other Somali pirates...makes me wonder how hard is it to keep a bunch of guys in a wooden fishing dinghy off a mass of steel like those super freighters?

Maybe posted guards and some weapons should become standard o.p. now.

The only way to effectively deal with pirates is to kill them. Anything else encourages further attacks.

What are you on about?
This is the first I have heard about America doing something about pirates.
Could you give us a link?

Yes, that's unquestionably the best way to deal with a problem, you get rid of it. /Sarcasm

And today the French took out a pirate mothership.

But if you want to believe this is just a case of America throwing its weight around go ahead.

Well, didn't the crewmates of the last pirates killed by those US Snipers proclaimed war on US waters or some shit.

So, either way they're just gonna' attack more and more. Unless... does anyone have a spare pony?

Couldn't watch the video since i'm at work but from what i read the US snipers took 3 pirates out with headshots, cause they held a captain hostage.
Only right thing to do in the situation.

Keep shooting pirates with hostages, cause if they just send them back to Somalia they'll be on the sea again in a few days, because Somalia doesn't have the rescources to prosecute them or do anything about them.

And you would deal with it by... paying millions in ransom money every few weeks? Letting Blackwater deal with it? Hoping they all decide to start a theme park instead of taking over ships and murdering the crews?

For all the bashing people do on France they were actually the first one to the party here. A couple months ago they chased down a band of pirates who were trying to escape inland with some ransom money and killed/captured most of them.

Let it serve as an example to others. Once it becomes clear that people can't get away with it anymore less people are going to start commandeering merchant ships.

How is that sarcasm? The best way to get rid of a problem is to eliminate the problem. No problem = no worries.
No, the best way to deal with a problem is not to get rid of it, the best way is to deal with it...

Don't know much about shipping and ships, do you? Trust me, it is NOT that easy. EVEN IF we could afford the manpower to arm every American Flag vessel with say... 16 Marines (4 standing 4 hour watches) there are over 10,000 American Flag vessels plying the Pacific ocean. 40,000 Marines cost a LOT of money...
That's 160,000 marines actually.

Agreed. The Navy handled this perfectly, they waited the terrorists out, trying to come to an agreement. When that fell through Saturday night, they sent the Seals after them.

And btw, those were some terrific shots. On the seas, where you are moving up and down constantly, and at night, with one of the terrorists holding an AK-47 to the captain's back.
