I've been looking for a new RPG for the PC and I noticed this on GoG. I've heard a lot of good things about this but because my PC was way out of date when it was originally released I missed most of the classics until KOTOR came out. Is this something that I should invest my money in or is there something else that will satisfy this particular itch?

Buy it.

I've gotten a bunch of games on GoG over the last few months since I got a cheap netbook for work. Most of them I'm finding nostalgia doesn't make up for the terrible gameplay... this one however, is awesome all around.

But it. This is a Bioware game before Bioware existed.
Planescape: Torment - 1999
Baldur's Gate - 1998 (the second game Bioware made)

In fact, Planescape was built on an engine Bioware created.

Anyway, yeah, I would definitely recommend the game. Just be sure you're playing it for the story and choices, because the actual gameplay just isn't fun. At least, it isn't to me, anyway.

If you can overlook the terribly outdated 2nd Edition rules, you'll get one of the most interesting and creative stories ever made for the PC platform. It is a treat for anyone who's serious about gaming.

Look behind you.
See that wall?
Chances are that parts of your brain are going to be covering it once you start playing.

If you are into playing old games get is ASAP... some people have issues playing older game because of how different they look graphically/sound wise.

Its a fantastic game but I couldnt replay it.. still wish I had it and the game box for my collection.

If you don't enjoy reading, don't buy it.
If you enjoy an excellent story, great characters, great everything, but it now. NOW!

Depends what kind of games you are into.
Torment is made on an old engine developed by Bioware, but they didn't make the actual game, so the connection is pretty shallow. The combat is a lot like Baldur's Gate I/II. The characters, setting and story is beyond amazing. There is a LOT of dialogue, and a lot of it is not "relevant", in that it does not necessarily advance the main plot. So yeah, if you don't like reading, and have zero interest in philosophy, mysticism and metaphysics, it may not be the game for you.

Brilliant game but only if you're really into roleplaying rather than just combat. The setting, cahracters, story and dialogue are fascinating but the combat is poor, thankfully meat of the game is in negotiating with people. I'd reccomend it.

I would want everyone to play it but do be warned this is an old old school RPG, 98% of the dialog is text only and the gameplay does not hold your hand.

But it is without a doubt one of the very best games in existence.

One of the best damn games I've played. Period. It's a game that despite its age does not date and has set the bar in quality so high, very few games since have come close to matching it.

Buy it. Buy it now!!!!

As everyone has already said, its one of the best RPG games of all times.

I've tried replaying the game a while ago and the resolution (640x480) was really bugging me. Everything else in the game still looks decent, even after 10 years.

Anyhow, check out the link below how to (graphically) improve the game with a few mods. I'm not sure if it works with the GOG-version, though. But I guess it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

It's the only CRPG that I've played that the Narrative choice you make really make a difference.

The early Black Isle infinity engine is a bit shit though so if you can get past the gamely it's basically a really really good 'choose your own adventure' book.

The setting is the best bit. I really wish that Bioware would license Planescape again.

A good build for a first time player is to stay a fighter (you start as one), but have high wisdom (16+), a reasonably high intelligence and a high CON. Dump stats are CHA and DEX. It will make the game's somewhat clunky combat easier to manage (you just wade in and smack things and regen health with high enough CON), your high wisdom will give lots of bonus xp, and your high intelligence and wisdom will open up most of the dialogue options and quests.

It's not a "power build" per se, simply a build that minimizes the clunkiness of combat while still lettting you experience most of the dialogue-based parts of the game. For more confident players, a mage with high wisdom and INT is very powerful at higher levels, and has the best potential for truly finding and experiencing everything the game has to offer. In general, the "mental stats", WIS, INT and, to a lesser extent, CHA determine how much of the game you "unlock" when you play it.

Also, don't ever ever lose the bronze sphere. You have to part with it at one point, but make sure you get it back. That's all I'll say not to spoil it, but it's an important plot item that you can lose, and it can potentially ruin the game if it's lost.
