I'm starting Fable 2 Again This time as one of those lovely mystical creatures known as 'females'

Do you play the opposite sex in a RPG on your second/third/millionth playthrough?

Careful when you hit Post, you've made triplets =X

Yeah, I may even play the opposite sex on my first playthrough. Just up to how I'm feeling at the time.

Yeah it's fun seeing the difference in the dialogue and the way the characters act towards you.

I played a female Shepherd in Mass Effect, just so I could violently reject that emo guy, order him off to his death, then have lesbian sex with the alien chick.

Mass Effect is about the only RPG in which gender makes any significant difference, mainly because it's the only RPG in which the protagonist is actually voice-acted.

So yeah, I played it again as a lady. She had a more convincing voice, and she emoted a bit more effectively, but it didn't really change the game that much.

With single player games, I tend to stick to my own gender, as I make a representation of myself. In multiplayer games (MMOs and tabletop alike), however, I tend to make female characters for the challenge and understanding that it brings. That, and it helps me understand female archetypes a lot more.

If playing a game by myself, I tend to stick to menfolk because, well, as a man, I think like a man. I did play female characters in Morrowind and Jade Empire, but that was because I struggled to find/create a male character who did not look like an epic loser to me (and I was irritated by Furious Ming's tattoos).

In Mass Effect, I played a female Shepard when my wife was making the decisions. The fact that Jennifer Hale did the voicework nearly tipped my own game.

Im with nimrandir I will usualy play a solo game or a first person game as a guy but if it requires a large Time commitment I will play female characters because I dont really like the idea of looking at a guys backside for any length of time.

Um.. no. I play it on my first playthrough. I often play as the wonderful (and sometimes not so wonderful) being known as female. I often feel I can immerse myself better as I can indulge in depth of character with more credibility, and enjoy the beauty as well, so why shouldn't I?

Funny, so did I.

I generally play through both genders if possible. The exceptions to that were KOTOR 1 and 2, because I didn't like any of the male character designs, and you spend enough time staring at their face when working through the conversation trees that got irritated enough to quit that playthrough. Actually, I didn't much care for most of the female face designs either, but at least none of them looked like Jedi Jesus.

It depends on the game, like in Mass effect you're actually forced to RP with youre speech choices, so if I'm forced to speak I'll play male, ie I always have male characters in Dark Heresy and D&D I just find it more comfortable to RP the same sex as me but in games like Oblivion and Fable 2 where the RP part of it is more or less just choosing where you'll go and the class you'll play I'll do female on the second go through.

It's OK RaRaLoco. We accept Gays in our Forums.

Just kidding.
Wanting a virtual character of a women to look at is pretty sad. Get a girlfriend if you want to look at a girl then teach her to play rockband. Worked for me.

I don't usually end up playing as a female character. It's not that I have anything against females being the primary character; I just find it easier to relate to a primary character of my gender. I feel bad for girl gamers, in this regard, as I imagine that a similar problem makes it less interesting for them to play games that only have a male protagonist (aka, most of them.)
