In Fallout 3, I enjoy playing a female approximatly half the time (only finished one game, as I can never get past the %50 mark without wanting to start a new game) because with the "Black Widow" perk plus the fact that %90 of the characters in it are male, you reap combat and dialouge benifits galore. Plus she usually isn't too hard on the eyes (for a character made outta pixles anyhow). Until I made that punker girl who hated everyone and well... she was ugly as hell and had a devil picture as her Karma level representation.

I tend to play as a female character in RPG's on the second playthrough, just to see if there's any difference in the gameplay.

Funny, so did I.

I generally play through both genders if possible. The exceptions to that were KOTOR 1 and 2, because I didn't like any of the male character designs, and you spend enough time staring at their face when working through the conversation trees that got irritated enough to quit that playthrough. Actually, I didn't much care for most of the female face designs either, but at least none of them looked like Jedi Jesus.
Wait. So you didn't like Jedi Jesus?

I would only play as a female character if they were better than males at using the search button.

Im with nimrandir I will usualy play a solo game or a first person game as a guy but if it requires a large Time commitment I will play female characters because I dont really like the idea of looking at a guys backside for any length of time.
Can I ever see a discussion like this that doesn't involve the "backside" line? I've played my share of RPGs, both 1st and 3rd person, and rarely spend any time at all looking at my character's "backside". Yes, we get it. You need to justify yourself. Whatever.

As for myself, in single player games if there are varying dialog options for male or female, I'll usually play through once as a female just to see what they are, or if a particular gender gets a nifty bonus such as the infinite Jedi Robes from the Handmaiden in KoTOR2, then I'll play that gender.

In MMO or multiplayer games, I play guys, and am usually really weirded out when "Jillian of the Blue Meadow" sounds like my stepdad. In MMOs, dude's playing as chicks need a clearly displayed emblem as such. Not so I can judge them, but just so I can brace myself for the heaby jeabies.

Meh, I tend to play as the females in any genre. Not just RPGs.

I don't know, I just find it more interesting. Unless there's a romantic interest. Then it's kind of boring.

Yeah, I'll play as a girl sometimes, though I'm almost always a guy the first time through. The only exception is if I don't like the guy possibilities at all. Left 4 Dead is an example...while I don't own it and have only played the demo, Zoey is the only character who doesn't annoy the hell out of me, so I'd rather play as her and watch those other idiots die rather than watching her die.

Usualy, when I start a game, I'll make two profiles, one male, and one female. If I'm indecisive about something, I'll make several more. Whichever one I find myself playing the most is entirely random, unless one of them looks less like a spaz than the others. Or more, as the case may be.

In pretty much every game that allows the option, I have played both genders simply to see if there is a difference in the dialogue whatsoever. I also use to quite a large amount of roleplaying on various forums and find female characters generally more entertaining to play and far more challenging. It has certainly improved my abilities as a writer over the years.

I did this.
but for the most part I dont care which one I play with, I will usualy do a second playthrough with the other gender just to see the differences.

It's interesting, now that I think about it. If I choose to be a male character, I think of him as an avatar of myself. I try to make him look and act like me if I were in the game's various situations.

But if I choose female, I think of it as stepping into an entirely different character. I try to imagine how this person I don't know would think, feel, and act, instead of me.

I think I learned something about myself today.

I played as a female on my second playthrough of Fable 2, because in an interview I heard you could get pregnant. Sounded like fun. It didn't happen.
Also, skate 2 demo, playing as a girl doesn't change the cutscenes. They still refer to you as Him.

Yup yup.. so did I, though not for those reasons. I love Kaidan as he is a romantic, just like me.. but the chance to get it on with an Asari? Yeah.. sorry, not going to pass that up.

This was the only way of playing I knew when I was younger.. until I saw the light.

For most RPGs and MMOs i pick female and possibly a male character later on. Some dialog options in games are different as a female and i find it interesting. Being a male i generally know a majority of responses a male character would give or receive, so it is a little bit more fun to play a female. My girlfriend in the same situation as me often picks male characters so i guess it just spikes peoples interest to play a girl when you aren't one.
