I played fallout 3 as a guy and as a girl... Being a girl is much better because of the black widow perk alone...
Males have an equivalent perk called "Lady Killer".

"If I'm gonna watch a jogging arse for hours on end, it's gonna be female."
In the fallout universe... take a good look around and see who the majority of people you need to persuade are...

It would be brilliant to see a pudgy girl in the kind of victoria's secret armor RPGs tend to saddle their female characters with.

Mooncalf'd Play Dat.
Try female Dwarves in World of Warcraft. I have two, a rogue and a hunter. I love the juxtaposition of a pudgy death-dealing killing machine. And there are a few pieces of armour that show off those meaty thighs to their best advantage. Such as it is.

being a sad old tabletop RPG player I always make a character backstory (even if one is provided - I just pretend that mine is the "real" story). So I play whichever sex is most appropriate to the story I'm making up in my head. This is also why i end up spending (wasting) so much time on the character creation screens getting them to match as closely as possible to the creation in my minds eye.

My warrior in WoW is a female dwarf. They look like they could actually hurt something with an axe. All of the other Alliance women are either whisper thin or a midget.

In Tony Hawks Underground I had a female character because the guy's voice was just too geeky sounding (not an RPG I know)
How is this any different than playing a game with a single (opposite) gendered protagonist to the player.

I play both genders but since I think of them more as characters or a friend (a stupid friend that needs protecting or hand holding) and not as myself the gender of the character doesn't matter. Either way they'll probably be evil on their first play through.

I kinda felt cheated, and such because i felt a little less bad ass.

...Susceptible to head-shots from morally grey vault-dwellers? That's how my female character felt. If you want to -seduce- them though, be my guest. :D

Could be worth a chuckle! Except that I've resisted WoW thus far and I'm not about to start now... I'll look them up on youtube anyhow. :)

Actually whenever I'm given the option to choose between male and female I always go for the female. The reason for this is that in the majority of games the main character is often a male so I like to balance things a little. I just LOVE my Fallout 3 female character; I have her dressed up with Vance's longcoat and I like to define her as a kick ass cyborg (robotics expert perk, computer genius perk, 100 on energy weapons, 100 on science, 100 on sneak and 100 on small guns).

In MMO's, I always play as females. Because if I'm going to be stareing at a character stabbing wolves for 5 hours, it may as well be something cute and worth watching.

I can't really visualise myself as a woman much without some strange questions being asked by family and friends so I tend to stick to Male Characters...Pixels dont turn Me on anyway

Play the DM over a game of D&D: You get to be both, sometimes have a conversation with yourself, and no-one thinks you are crazy. And yes, I did once roleplay (as DM) a man and a woman talking to each other, as well as the party.

But online, I tend to stick with males (I'm male). Mostly because it means less socialization is expected. The only problem is the games that have people playing sluts/whores/whatever, who think that they can use their being female and your being male to get some money from you.

Only one person can do that to me, and that's my brother (yes, he plays female characters: gives him an edge when he's bargaining, which he does a lot anyways).

I'm just going to be honest here: I always play a good male *first*, until I get bored or finish the game when I then go through as a good male again (I *hate* playing evil characters), and then I finish it off by playing as a hawt chick with a serious aversion to clothing.

That explains why my characters tend to be male; I feel incapable of thinking from a female perspective. I think my Morrowind experience suffered a little due to this dilemma, even though I never had to see poor Armonna Drem again after I left Seyda Neen.

After getting bored of playing a ugly ass australian in Saints Row 2 I went to a plastic surgeon and changed my character to a sexy little redhead. Then proceeded to buy her the skimpiest clothing around. But yeah, it just felt more right being utterly evil as a female.
I completely understand. Especially that last part.
Somehow, I'd agree; my second character on Fallout 3 is female, and is evil to the extent of slowly mrdering, enslaving and robbing her way through rivet city, after blowing up megaton, killing several tenpenny tower residents, turning in the escaped slaves and killing all the inhabitants of arefu and bigtown....
I'm getting slightly worried by my more psychotic side here....

I played a female Shepherd in Mass Effect, just so I could violently reject that emo guy, order him off to his death, then have lesbian sex with the alien chick.
Funny, so did I.

I generally play through both genders if possible. The exceptions to that were KOTOR 1 and 2, because I didn't like any of the male character designs, and you spend enough time staring at their face when working through the conversation trees that got irritated enough to quit that playthrough. Actually, I didn't much care for most of the female face designs either, but at least none of them looked like Jedi Jesus.
Wait. So you didn't like Jedi Jesus?
You didn't like the awsome hard as nails dude with the scar underhis eye? (i played as him every time i played a male character in either of those games)

more relavently i play a a guy first, making any descisions the same way i would in reality (assuming i knew how to use that gun lightsabre or sword the guy on the screen has), then play as a slut for laughs, if it wont let me then i make my female character evil as possible

Erm ... Hi, first time poster here :)

I don't usually end up playing as a female character. It's not that I have anything against females being the primary character; I just find it easier to relate to a primary character of my gender. I feel bad for girl gamers, in this regard, as I imagine that a similar problem makes it less interesting for them to play games that only have a male protagonist (aka, most of them.)
Well, I play as my own gender (female) any time I have the choice. But when I don't (such as Gears of War) it's not too bad. I don't get the same sense of attachment/immersion, but it's still fun. It's not like it's something I have an aversion to. They're just games, after all.

*grins* I agree! Female bodies just look better ;)

Yeah, I get really annoyed with pretty much every game having stick-figure as the only body size option. No wonder a lot of us girls have body image issues! That 'ideal' is shoved in our faces everywhere *sulks* I'd much prefer a bulkier character to play, and loved my WoW dwarf. I just really don't find skinny girls to be attractive *shrugs*
