As far as i'm aware it won't be mandatory to still go online. I think whoever wrote the linked article has assumed that since earlier updates were required to go online this one will be too.

If it has been stated that it's optional, it must well be because all anouncements concerning firmware updates in the past have pretty much said that they were required. Besides the firmware updates are how they get the new features on the console in the first place. I could be wrong of course.

As for PS2 compatibility that was only available on the original 60GB consoles
It is, it's written on the official playstation Blog apparently.

PlayStation Network, play online games, and access media servers. Additionally, videos, games, and Blu-rays that require the new update will be rendered unplayable to users of other operating systems.

EDIT: Losing features every day? REALLY? 2 in 3 years? Or is there over a thousand I missed?

EDIT2: Also the SD card readers & 2 USB's. Again they were only on the 60's but I'd still like you to list the thousand I've missed

Yup I was wrong. I don't see it as a big deal though, it has been said that hardly anyone uses it which you also admitted to. Also before you respond check the edits to my first post

They took away backwards compatibility? What?
Back in 2007, and then Linux in 2010.
Apparently 3 years = Everyday.
I just wanted to put things into perspective for you since you're contradicting yourself.

Honestly I don't think anyone took advantage or cared what OS was on their PS3. I surely don't care.
But...the OP says they had Linux on their PS3, so obviously at least one person took advantage of it and cared what was on their PS3.

Did you even read the OP?
Oh my god you nitpick at everything. Obviously the OP cares, but I don't, and didn't know anyone did until him. Seriously dude you deconstruct everything, it's the internet, stop caring.
If you want to be rude and hypocrite about what you're saying then here a full list of things they pulled out of the PS3

Card Readers
2 USB ports
Backwards Compatibility
Choice to decide on a model that has Backwards Compatibility
Linux

Yes I think they are stripping out a lot of features and for a console that's a lot of things they removed.

It's a bit unfair that they took away a feature they put in for free?

Seriously? All I can say is cry moar, you said you barely used the feature and your still complaining?
Do you even read what's in the topic? Or what you post? Or know how rude you are? I said I don't care about the removal Linux but that they're stripping features off the PS3. So read that and honk honk find another topic to be rude to :)
Or maybe you could just stop being such a cry baby?

They took out Linux, something they put in for FREE as an update years ago, and you're getting all pissy about it, even though you never used it?

The features they have "stripped off everyday" aren't vital ones. You don't need to play Ps2 games on a PS3, you don't need 4 USB ports and you don't need Linux.

Do any of those features keep you from playing your PS3 games? No, so get over it. And try coming up with actual responses instead of flaming others.
Again, It's a discussion. I don't like that they're removing features, and if you don't care then that's fan-dabby-tastic for you because that's your right. However if you're not going to discuss anything then why are you here? I've flamed no one and have given geniune information and you're just blatently calling me an idiot for my opinion. I dislike they're removing features from PS3, if that's something you don't like then oh well it's my opinion.

So whatever man either take a step back and cool off or keep going and get yourself in trouble. Because I don't really care what you have to say because you're just text on a page to me. :)

I'll say it again, I meant the title as an exaggeration, it HAS lost a lot of features and that's sad to see ya know?

I use the readers a lot because I have a camera and such, I think it was on the 120GB model or whatever was above the 60 at some point...not sure.

And to state it again, I know linux isn't a big deal, it's just they've removed a lot of features and honestly I was just posting what I found and I thought maybe someone might find that this is big news to them. If it's not news to anyone and they don't care then just say so haha. Am I really upset? No, but it bugs me that they're removing stuff from the PS3.

The Backwards compatibility is what really made me mad because if my system breaks I have lost that option. So, again it's just more about a stack of features being lost rather than just linux.

In the long run, Linux is useless to me because I have a working PC, but I just hope they're out of things they're pruning off the system, because I liked that the PS3 DID truly do everything. Well, mine still does anyway.

Sure it may not have been too popular, but if it was already there, what the hell is the point in TAKING AWAY A FEATURE?

Wait, we can't play PS2 games on PS3 anymore? Why the hell not? Even though mine hasn't been used in two years I now consider it OFFICIALLY bricked.

It's impressive how many people that seem to be missing the point and acting incredibly hostile towards the OP. The point is not that he used these features or not, it's asking if Sony is justified in striping out these features for the great holy quest of game developers to weakly try to stop piracy. This update for the people who actually used Linux now forces them to instead of using their console for entertainment spend an evening completely fixing up their PS3 so it can actually be usable.
Even if you don't agree with how the OP feels about what Sony is doing or the importance of it all there are much more graceful and civil ways to express that.

No that is fine in the fat models. They just took away the ability to install Linux on the fat models.

Whew! Now I can go back to pretending I might start using it again in the distant future, that is if I can find it under the mounds of dust

Thank you, finally someone sees that I'm JUST reporting what I found and that I'm disappointed. I truly don't care about linux, but it's something that I found and I wanted people to know. If it's not important or if you think Linux was stupid to have their in the first place then say so don't light me on fire because of it.

I'm curious as to what the point in taking the feature away was. Did it impose some sort of security risk to them?
It's how Geohot bypassed the hypervisor to get into the game OS. Basically it is more protecting their (not really endangered) bottom line rather than security for users, since the exploit has to be executed with the end user's knowledge or consent.

Or maybe you could just stop being such a cry baby?
Or maybe you could stop being such a fangirl?

Seriously it's a valid point. When they changed the models they took away the card readers and the backwards compatability. Then the loss of 2 USB slots which actually is a pain in the rear if you're using them for anything. I've got a keyboard, charge cables and a few other things that I plug in, notably a card reader since they took that away. Losing the two slots was a pain in the rear.

They didn't put something in for free, it was part of the marketing on the console (look what ours can do that the others can't!) and it was a part of the purchased package. Imagine sending your 360 in for repair and them sending it back minus the two USB slots on the front. You'd think there was something wrong with them. And there is - Sony has a problem with keeping to its SKUs, flooding the market with variations and then hoping it increases sales. See the PSP for an example.

When the stripped down the newer models at least customers got a cheaper product out of it, with this whole Linux thing there is zero benefit to the people (like me.) who have original model PS3s.

As a PS3 owner this really irritates me.

There was even a few false promises early on in the PS3's shelf time after they removed the backwards compatibility, that they'd put it back in. Despite having a "team" "working on it" all those years ago, the feature never returned.

Linux functionality will be gone forever, too. No surprises there. I'm glad it's not something that I'd directly use. Still, it irks me that they keep lowering the value of the object that I paid good money for.

The PS3 really has turned out to be a disappointment. What a waste of money it has been so far... I mean, really, some of the old ads begin to look like false advertising by now.

While cheaper is good (600 dollars was an insane asking price) they should at least offer the option of the original 60GB model with backwards compatibility and such. Obviously charge more for it because it's just icing on the cake, but it's just something they SHOULD give the option for. I mean how many people would buy that option? A lot I figure since the PS2 has a lot of incredible games.
