Playstation Network: Reasons for hate?

As of a few hours ago, I picked up a PS3 for the first time. I remember reading a while ago that people seemed to have a strong distaste for the Playstation Network. I've always owned a 360 and loved features of XBL, but I am quite impressed with the Playstation Network...moreso than I thought I'd be after hearing all the negative talk about it. It appears to me to be more organized as well as more aesthetically pleasing.

Is this new? Did it really suck at some point in time?
And why still all the hate and claims that it "isn't as good as XBL?"

Not trying to pick a fight, just looking for something that I may be missing...

I wasn't aware there was hate for it. I prefer it infinitely over XBL since I don't have to pay to play online.

Because Xbox owners want to have 1up on PS3 owners.

Honestly I don't really see the point.

I don't think the complaints are about the PSN organization or being aesthetically pleasing or anything like that. The only real complaint I've heard about PSN is the performance. More instances of laggy games, slower downloads, etc. Which is completely understandable for a free service. But fanboys on both sides are always looking for things to snipe at, so of course someone will have complained about every aspect of every console at one point or another.

No.. not really, however in the PS2/Xbox era, where it all started, Honestly XBL was a better service as it really didnt require having to buy hardware, and there were more games that were able to actually use it. During the ps2 days, there really wasnt nearly the catalogue of games that would use the multiplayer aspect. I think that initial disparity is where any argument against PSN stems from, though in this day and age it only shows how behind the curve that argument is. If youve seen PSN within the last 2-4 years, you know its every bit as robust as XBL. But some people will base an opinion on how things were 5+ years ago and never bother to look at how it is now.

Who'd hate the Playstation Network for a good reason?

Well, if you ask me, Xbox live got a more structured way with the Internet game play. Dedicated servers, admins and the right to complain over the service comes with Xbox live.

I remember this one time, in Left 4 Dead 2, this admin joined the game and spawned like, 5, 15 tanks and erased gravity. You wouldn't think the Tanks could reach you, but once they jumped... You'd have to watch your feet, man.

I thought all the hate was for Playstation Home.
The crappy afterthought of a social networking scene that had aspirations of become a more evolved second life....

PSN is pretty damn good

Well thats not true. I've seen MW2 played on a PS3 and if there is a Host Migration it does the exact same as it does on my computer version of MW2, chooses a new host, sets up the game exactly where it left off and continues on its way. And with IWNet there is no dedicated severs at all.

I don't know the hate for PSN, I have both consoles and I like them exactly the same. People just have preferences from on to another I guess.

Actually in my experience, I've had a lot less lag on the PSN than through Live. And much bigger games too, I've had seamless 32 player matches on my PlayStation whereas I've never had a lag free 8 vs 8 game on Live.
I know this is partly to do with my own poor bandwidth but even my friend who has the best broadband we can currently get in the UK seems to get a lot of lag in bigger games on Live.

In my opinion, Live offers a better range of DLC compared to PSN. It simple has more games and other stuff that interest me.

There is also quite a big difference between regions. The PAL region seems to have the least content of all, especially when we're talking PS1 Classics.

I still like it, but I wish we had as much content as American and Japanese users have.

Believe it or not, this is actually one of those things that can tip my decision to either go for a PS3 or a 360. At the moment, I'm thinking the 360 looks pretty good for me. I mean, I play a lot of fighting games. Being able to play Tekken 6, Soulcalibur 4, not to mention get all these other DLCs available to me? Sold.

I like both tbh. XBL is alot easier to navigate then PN, but not by much. Both have their pro's and cons I guess.

I used XBL for quite some time before I got a PS3 and during that time I heard a lot of hate about PSN.

Looking back at that I really don't know why.

No it's not. It hasn't been for ages now. It's been 300 since last year.

You do realize that the 3 games you mentioned (along with their DLC) are also on the Ps3? Also, if you're a pad player then there's not much worse than the 360 controller.

Someone's still living in 2006.

On topic: While it "may" be true that Xbox live receives a better connection (which has never been confirmed to me by the by), it completely boggles my mind that many of my Xbox friends think Psn is terrible completely based on the fact that it's free. I personally think its pretty good.

You're gonna have to explain this to me. Is there something wrong with the 360 and the game ports? I mean, yeah, they have their unsightly controller, but then I would probably end up getting myself a stick anyway. Still, I'm all ears if there's something I should be aware of.

It's just a tiny bit peculiar that you're saying the 360 "wins" for having games that the Ps3 has also.

What he said, and the d-pad issues for the 360
