The World Ends With You is probably the weirdest DS game I have ever played, weird because I almost took it back to the store, and then turned around and loved it. The music was not my style, at all, but after a little while I was hooked on it in the best way. The combat is one of the most difficult combat styles I have ever seen in a game, where you try to control 2 characters, one on the top screen, other on the bottom, with completely different controls at the same time, and it frustrated me to no end... and then I got better at it, and found it very enjoyable, the game makes you work for your victories. Yahtzee was right though, the clothing styles are simply ridiculous.

I also love the Phoenix Wright games to death, but I don't think a single copy of any of the games exist in Michigan, so I had to play them on an emulator

Edit: Gah I completely forgot, all of the Mario RPGs on the DS are a blast, and Chrono Trigger is on the DS, which I like better than most of the old school Final Fantasy games put together (Have not played 4)
Edit 2: I also enjoyed Okamiden, it wasn't nearly as good as the first, but I still had a lot of fun with it, and Chibiterasu is simply adorable

My girlfriend owns a DS, not me, and I only ever bought one game for it, but boy, do I love it. And it's odd, because I don't even like the JRPG genre:

The world End's With You

Great game, really fun combat for the ds and the story is good. The music is mentionable also.

Nobody mentioned Suikoden Tierkreis yet? That game just doesn't get the love it deserves.

A game I enjoyed very much on the DS is The World Ends With You, a JRPG with a pretty unique combat system. And a godly soundtrack.
Seconded. You'll most likely hate it in the very beginning. Give it time. You'll end up absolutely loving it. :)

Also, I cite Dragon Quest IX as one of the best games on the system. Surprisingly, the Final Fantasy offerings on DS haven't been that impressive.

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin is my favorite DS game, a really well done TBS. A bit grim compared to the other Advance Wars games though.

Rhythm Heaven, The World Ends With You, Bowser's Inside Story, The Golden Sun games, (even though the first two were on GBA) any game with Pokemon stamped on it, any game with Final Fantasy stamped on it. Thats all I can remember from memory, haven't played my DS in quite a long time.

Does anyone have a DS game they really enjoyed? Preferably an RPG, but if something from a different genre impressed you feel free to suggest it. Any recommendation will be much appreciated.

I've barely played my DS to be honest (aside from Pokemon) but I whole heartedly LOVE Ninja Town.

Yes it's a tower defense, but the humor that it has is AMAZING! Plus, it's actually challenging and addictive :D

Oh yeah, I love the Advance Wars games. But if I'm honest, I think Advance Wars: Dual Strike is better.

If you can only ever play one DS game, make it The World Ends With You. One of the greatest RPGs ever made, easy.

Also make sure to play the Phoenix Wright series, because they're similarly incredible.

Get Elite Beat Agents for one of the most addictive and entertaining time-wasters you'll ever play.

Get Hotel Dusk: Room 215 for an awesome noir-style adventure game.

Get the Professor Layton games for some great puzzle games with intriguing mystery stories.

And seriously, The World Ends With You. Wow.

For RPGs, Dragon Quest IX is a classic JRPG, but the quest system is annoying and frustrating so I'd skip over most of those (they rely heavily on random chance).

Also, Radiant Historia is quite good if slightly unbalanced. It has a pretty neat battle system that relies on combo chains and grid positioning, and since it involves time travel and alternate histories, there are some interesting sidequests.

Oh and I'm assuming you've played Chrono Trigger. If you haven't, it's one of the best games of all time and one that everyone should play at least once if not for its historic significance.

If you can import it, look into Jump! Ultimate Stars. It's pretty fun even if you're aren't into animu and mangu. I'm not particularly, but it's a fun Smash Brothers style game for the DS that SHOULD be a little cheaper than when I got it.

Probably been said and is not rpg but is turn based-ADVANCE WARS. Dual Strike is really good, i have over 240 hours in it, it keeps track :(. Also Days of Ruin is pretty good but it tries to reboot the storyline, although neither storyline is any good. I recommend Dual Strike because it is traditional but Days of Ruin has some nice new units.

Advance Wars is great, my favorite handheld series.

Actually I'm surprised at how many recommendations this game got. I stopped playing near the start. The characters seemed cliche and thick as bricks. The combat system is completely superfluous since you can just let the computer take over the girl's controls and get basically the same result. Mostly I just thought the characters were irritating. The guy for being an arrogant tosspot and the girl for spouting crap about friendship all the time. It seems to be another of those ridiculous "learning the importance of friendship" stories. Is there some clever plot twist or unexpected narrative device later on? There are a few people saying they didn't like it initially but grew to love it later on.

Yeah, I think it gets better. It grew to be one of my favorite DS games/ games in general. The story gets more interesting, and there are multiple twists that occur throughout the game, its not just a story about friendship, as it seems to be during week one in the game, but most of the real heavy story related stuff doesn't really come in until the end of week 1.
