Cutesy and sweet at first but genuinely touching at the end. It is a tad cliche tho' not gonna lie.

I second the mention of Moyashimon and Kashimashi in this thread, even if Kashimashi is more romance.

I also forgot to mention Shinryaku! Ikamusume. Surprisingly funny and surprisingly touching, given the absurdity of the plot. Basically, a squid girl appears. At its best, it kind of reminds me of Yotsuba, which is pretty high praise.

EDIT: If you end up liking Kashimashi, I would heartily recommend Aoi Hana, Sasameki Koto, Candy Boy (the opposite of what it sounds like, interestingly) and Maria-sama ga Miteru.
