After just having finished the superb Machinarium, I was wondering - what other point and click adventure games of this calibre are there on the market? It's such an awesome genre, I enjoyed playing through that clever, intimate experience far more than, for example, playing Red Dead Redemption (which is awesome, but it just feels less...personal?) What's your favourite point and click game, and why?

The browser games Nick Bounty and Brain Hotel. Mostly the Nick Bounty ones because they satirize the old detective type shows.

To be frank, the free flash point and clickers are the best.

The Submachine series are my favorite.
I am in absolute agreement with this here statement.

And Myst/Riven are also good, if you can FIGURE THEM OUT @_@;;;

The Longest Journey. A masterpiece classic of point and click adventure games, both parts are worth it for the world, story and pure enjoyment.

Myst counts as a point and click?

Then Myst too.
Myst is awesome.
I would assume so, seeing as you only control a little hand and you click to make it move? lol
Some of the Nancy Drew games aren't bad either (I've acquired a faint taste for them after havign to help my little sister with them) but the theme/setting/case has to draw me in first.

Monkey Island FTW!!

Ok obvious I know, but the first one was just so legendary and endearingly frustrating, I spent hours trying to figure out what to give the canibals to get the navigator head (which god of war 3 totally ripped off (no pun intended)) but it remained fun :D

Is the Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition worth getting on Steam? Around how long will it take me, and what's the difficulty like? I don't want a game I can breeze through in an hour, is all.

I've got to recommend my personal favourite, Broken Sword. There's a lot of great ones out there, many older but newer ones too.

Sam and max hit the road, its a funny and smart point and click, that has to much to offer.
from the fun mini-games to max's aggressive attitude. I just love it, its also a legend of the point and click world.

Oh, ah, I don't use steam (lol when I had monkey island it came on a floppy disk) but as for playing it through in an hour, i occasionally hammer my way through it for funsies and I Know all the puzzles off by heart, and it takes me the best part of five hours, so I'm not saying it's not worth getting, but there will be places where you will A. think intensely about an illogical solution to the logical puzzle before you B: rub everything in your inventory against everything else in the room untill something happens or C: break your keyboard in half over your knee.

And yes, it will take longer than an hour

The games I remember the most are the Broken Sword games. I loved those games when I was young.

Grim Fandango is great but it is sort of hard to get and play at the moment. Why do I like it you ask? Lots of good tricky puzzles, good music. It's funny, sad and has a really annoying part with a glitchy conveyor belt that I probably shouldn't mention if I want to paint it as some perfect game.

Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2 are very good. First has been remade recently and second is coming up. If you like Machinarium then I would recommend Loom and Beneath a Steel Sky. Loom is on steam and Beneath a Steel Sky can be gotten for free from various internety spider's web places.

Good Old Games [http://www.gog.com] have a perfectly legal version for free.

Day of the Tentacle or Longest Journey. These two are probably tied for me. But I was raised on point and click games, so I think there are a lot of them out there that are great to play.

Yeah, it's freeware now. Just providing a safe link where Escapist dudes and dudettes could get it if they so desired!

The Monkey Island series, Sam & Max Hit the Road, Grim Fandango, The Longest Journey and Day of the Tentacle.

I personally thought that the Discworld adventure games were pretty good too.
