With a new Pokemon Generation on the horizon I was thinking what I would like to see added to the game to mix up the formulaic gameplay. We've already seen some stuff like 3d towns and that the 3 on 3 battles but I'd love to see:

Better representation of non-legendary non-starter Fire, Electric and Grass Pokemon. Seriously the lack of cool (and strong) Pokemon of these types is depressing. I don't want to have to get Magneton again, he's okay but He's been on my team for every Generation.

A new take on HMs, my Water pokemon needs some cool moves! I'm sick of using up slots for stuff like Whirlpool or any of the other boring useless in-battle abilities. And I refuse to have an HM Slave because it feels like a waste and really hurts the immersion. They even included Tropius, a sweet Grass type, but made him weak as hell so his only function was to be an HM slave, Game Freak please stop encouraging bad roleplaying!

Finally some sort of Trainer Bonus system, I dunno like different training styles that translate to stat bonuses to your pokemon. Maybe something to allow you to specialise in type, like be a Fire Trainer and not be too hampered throughout the game. This would break up the find-a-strong-pokemon-of-each-type, pwn every trainer, system. It could make the later game a bit more challenging rather than a game of rock paper scissors.

These are just a few things I'd like to see, either way I'm going to get and probably enjoy the games. What would you guys like to see added/removed from the pokemon series this instalment?

I love the idea of specializing in one element of Pokemon. I, personally, have always loved the Normal type, but dislike constantly having to catch other types for the sake of HMs.

Miltank can learn surf, you know!

Exactly, I'd also love to see more unique progression of stats that would make leveling more interesting after Your pokemon has fully evolved and learned all the moves it needs. This would make non-evoloving pokemon more interesting and really make getting to level 100 more fun.

What they're adding so far looks interesting.

What I would do is get some artists together and design some more interesting pokemon for this generation. The ones so far look terrible and just seem to be rehashes of ideas from early generations and this is coming from someone who generally thinks the pokemon have actually got better as they go.

I think that they should
A: allow you to start in Kanto and work your way to the newest place
B: allow your starter to be ANY 1st level non-legendary pokemon
C: make the leveling system ONLY for move-gaining, so that everybody's pokemon aren't super mega powerful by the end of Hoenn

I would make Grand Theft Pokemon! where you use your pokemon to terrorise the towns and kill other trainers and steal there pokemon!

Failing that a btter story would be nice, or some new battling mechanic or failing that have pickachu follow you round again.

They did the Pikachu thing in HeartGold and Soulsilver

I'm hoping for some better, and more varied fire-types.

They haven't added a good fire-type that wasn't a starter since Camerupt.

They did? i Realy should have gotten one of them. I had money issues when they came out.

More ideas- Have the option to be 'evil' and be able to be a gym leader or similar.

I actually like that, I'd like progression though but it could be focusing on making a pokemon stronger but it also gets slower to balance it out that could be cool cause it would be balanced but going against a maxed speed pokemon whatever detriment would be difficult so the time that person put in doesn't feel like a waste.. Maybe minor increase in overall stats to show some growth throughout the story.
You don't want to feel like you could have beaten the Elite 4 within 10 minutes.

Let pokémon have more than 4 moves, maybe have it so any pokémon capable of a HM can just use it in the world rather than gimp their combat for it (Don't know about anyone else, but I just gameshark a low level mew to hold HMs like a swiss army knife). Being able to visit the other regions and catch every pokémon in one game would be nice too.

I'm VERY glad that they've kept the 2D pokémon sprites tho, every generation I get this horrid feeling they'll be replaced by crap looking 3D models in battle.

And would it kill them to add a pure flying type? Flying/Normal bugs me for some reason.

This, maybe like 6 or 8 moves or separate TMs from HMs so HMs are like passive ability's that can only be used outside combat.

I'd get rid of the "Low HP" alarm first thing. It is, bar none, the absolute most annoying thing about the Pokemon series, in my opinion.

Secondly, I'd add the option to have your Pokemon learn HM moves passively. Like, if you want to teach your Machamp to use Strength in battle, you can, but if you'd rather teach it to move boulders outside of battle without taking up an attack slot, you can do that, too. It makes a whole lot more sense than the way the system works now.

And as long as we're dreaming, I'd take the whole thing, put it on Xbox Live Arcade/Playstation Network and finally give the series the multiplayer makeover it deserves, complete with leaderboards and the ability to take over as a Gym Leader once certain conditions are met.

That's been annoying me too. I always have a Gengar on my team, the Flying/Normal makes them immune to Ground AND Ghost attacks! Grrrrrrr! THIS MAKES ME FURIOUS WITH ANGER!

The passive HM idea is great, and I've actually always wanted to be able to somehow become a gym leader or member of the Elite Four. If that happened, then the characters themselves, appearance-wise, would have to be extremely customizeable, at least if you make it to that level. Can't have important people like that looking generic!

Wish there was a way to truly define what your trainer is like. Say for instance he/she's good or evil, that he/she is an expert in fire or water which then affects your pokemon's leveling curve and stats ultimately. Basically just overall customisation on the trainer.

I'd like to see the sprites be customisable in general like that new PS3 16 bit style dungeon crawler where you just build the sprite yourself.
But it's a Japanese game and in general their RPGs lack true Roleplaying in favor of, "Take this hip character and build up his stats around a story we have made for you", I don't mind it but I prefer western RPGs in that sense.

I think the story should be longer, and there should be more event battles with dteam whatever they are nowadays. More towns more gyms, just...more please.
