do you find in the new pokemon games you have to have one or two pokemon that you have just to use HMs. for example on soul silver i have a raticate for all the on land hms (rocksmash, strength, rockclimb, and cut) and a gyarados for all the water ones (surf, waterfall, and whirlpool) do you have to do this? and do you also think nintendo have gone overboard with the HMs? and by the way i didnt mention fly cuz usually iv always got a flying type with me.

It can be a bit annoying because they are often pretty bad in combat because you dont want to waste time leveling them up because they have such bad attacks

Ug.
I get HM's but they do get annoying.
I try to spread them among my pokemon evenly. but like Rock Smash.
It takes up an attack space and its really weak. So you know. Grrrr.
I am glad they made flash a TM though!

I hate HM's.

They completely break my Pokemon selection. All those attacks planned out for the enemy? Fuck that, I must leave space for waterfall.

I just have one or two HM slaves who learn all the HMs for me so my combatting Pokemon can focus just on fighting.

(This post was supposed to be in Yahtzee's review of FF13, I had too many tabs open and posted in the wrong one, I don't hate Pokemon, quite the opposite actually, as long as we're talking about the core gameboy versions (no spinoffs or shows or cards or crap like that) I love Pokemon)

In my ruby game, I can almost fit all 8 in a gyarados and a skarmory. flash is the wild card, but hey, I only really need it twice and after that, I can bury the stupid thing and forget about it.

I usually start with the water starter, so I use him for surf, and a random pokemon for the other waters. The land ones go on some random guy who, once I can fly everywhere, sits in the PC box for all eternity.

Whats with the amount of pokemon threads recently?

Anyway, I've always found that HM's weren't that bad as moved to use anyway, so its never really been annoying.

I have a Pokemon for most of them. I actually like fly, surf and strength. Other than that though I dump the rest on something useless.

I think the main character should learn the abilities like an RPG hero or something. He could cut down tress, push boulders, swim (you could still surf faster if they wanted) and climb rock walls. Give the Pokemon the stranger ones like Flying and Flash and whatnot.

They need to really get rid of them. Not being able to forget them adds insult to injury.
You CAN forget them, it's just needlessly complicated. You have to visit the move forgetter in the town he appears in.

But yeah, most of them are a waste of space. I'm glad they removed flash as an HM, now if they can just weed out the others. I really don't understand why they can't just be used as innate abilities. Most people would assume a water based creature would be able to swim right off the bat without a special move required.

My only problem with HM's is most of them are so damn situational. Rock samsh, strength, whirpool, etc. You needed waterfall for 1 part in G/S. What a waste.

i wish it was just an ability. example: why should you have an HM for Fly or Surf? Shouldn't a flying pokemon know how to fly? shouldn't a water pokemon know how to surf?

as for the other shitty ones, just take out the situations they're needed in. i realize they're to prevent players from getting to an area they shouldn't be in, but i don't know anyone who likes HMs.There is nothing good about them.

I usually keep a junk Pokemon somewhere in my box for the less useful HMs, like Strength, Rock Climb, Rock Smash, Defog, etc.

There are a couple of HMs I find genuinely useful, though; Fly and Surf. They're invaluable in the overworld, and their attack power is high enough that they're pretty useful in battle, too.

I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not, but Flash lost HM status.

Back to the matter at hand, yes I have one pokemon that I dump HM moves on.

They immediately added Defog though, which I hate. It has to be the most useless HM.

I can find hope for Rock Smash though. It does lower defense, which softens tanks up nicely for a good swift Cross Chop.

It's okay! The advances of today's technology allows us to have eight Pokemon rather than six, leavning more space for combat Pokemon!

DERP.

Ok, while it IS true that the game gets good about 20 hours in, it would be unreasonable to say in the least to expect anyone to play that long to get to the "good part" if they hate it, also, there is no excuse for it taking 20 hours to get good.

For the first 20 hours of my playthrough, all I wanted to do was go to a fucking town, but apparently that is too much to ask in a FREAKING RPG!

It was good by "all games" standards, but bad by "final fantasy" standards
I have a hunch, just a slight hunch, this is in the wrong thread.
