So I'm guessing most people here have heard Yahtzee's opinion on Pokemon, but what about everybody else?
What are your likes/dislikes about the Pokemon fanchise?

I enjoy the games for a few primary reasons;
1) I've always preferred games that aren't grounded to our own universe, as it gives that chance to explore something new and sometimes completely different to what you already know. Games like Mass Effect can nail this point rather well, giving you an entire galaxy to explore (somewhat).

2) The franchise may not have moved much since, but that's not essentially a bad thing. And yet, it also manages to bring something else new to the table every generation; Gen 2 had colour, animated sprites, as well as introducing new types of pokemon (dark & steel). Gen 3 had full colour, introduced double battles (still my favourite kind of battles)... I could go on, but the bottom lines is, it tends to find that little spot between not a lot of change (Total War?), and too much change (Command & Conquer 4).

3)The series might not seem very challenging, but the games offer plenty of opportunities for the player make the challenge him/herself; a good early example is the 1st gym in Black & White, which always get the type advantage over your starter type, but there's a girl that will gladly give away a Pokemon to counter the gym. The challenge? Don't take it, use only your starter against the gym (a little easier than it sounds). Another good example is the infamous 'Nuzlocke Challenge' (look it up if you don't know it).

4) THE MUSIC. Whether it be travelling tunes or battle themes, there's always something that I'll like in the Poke-playlist, even N (the green-haired Zealot) and your 'rivals' (Charen & Bianca) have cool battle themes. ...at least in my view.

I love it because its a deep RPG that, despite having cartooney visuals, is pretty dark. I mean its about legalized dog fighting in a society that prizes victory above all else, even love. Dark if you look to deep, light if you don't.

Reason to like ? A fairly solid RPGs with a lot of depth and approachability, and it can be fun (sometimes)

Reason to dislike ? No improvements that are worth mentioning ever since Pokemon Silver/Gold.

Reason to like? you get to rasie to pokemon you think are cool, create your own team and battle battle battle. Lots of depth even if the common player doesn't notice. And since lots of my friends have it, it's easy to trade and battle.

Reason to dislike? No pokemon action RPG that plays just like the show. It would be nice if I could dodge attacks on my own.

I like it for the reasons stated above.

What I hate is that I don't think there is enough variation between the games released together (why have Black and White? Why not just one?) and the fact that once you beat it, you can't really battle other trainers again to level up the rest of your team.

Also, I admit that turn-based combat is kind of annoying...I should be able to do more than just pick a move and wait.

Reasons to like?
Simple, friendly game play for all ages to enjoy. You get to collect colourful firebreathing, bubblepissing monsters and watch them beat eachother around. and Nurse Joy.

Reasons to Dislike it eh?
I can think of about 242 reasons..
242 being the number of new pokemon that followed after the original gold and silver games. Sorry people but you're suckers if you actually think the insulting 'Mega Evolutions' and these over designed Bigsupercooldragonlike pokemon are better than the friendly and effective originals. I know Jynx was a mistake but Japan enjoy pulling those sort of stunts so I took it.

Not even the physical special split?

Reason to like, solid strategy RPG with a ton of replay value if you are in to competitive play

Reason to dislike, Breeding for a shiny with a perfect nature and IVs...

Reason to like-
Some of the Pokemon designs (say what you want but there are at least SOME good looking ones).

Reason to dislike-
Some of the Pokemon designs (E.g. the gear and the Ice cream Pokemon's).

Just as well you can still catch some of the originals in the new game then, eh?
And while Pokemon from Gen 3 and up may be over-designed, I'd still take a lot of Pokemon over Lickyitung, Ditto and Grimer.

Something I'm very greatful for.
Ditto and Likitung were obvious gap-fillers true, and Mr.Mime, that berk gave me a headache in the TV series!

I know its a protest and I'm aware my attitude sucks but I still make the effort to catch the original 150 in the newer games, even if I wasnt too fond of some of them before, but my heart and soul still lay with originals and I will die by it.

OP: you asked. So I don't want any of you peoples accusing me of trollin'.

It's a fantasyland, apparently some apocalyptic wasteland wherein children cockfight with giant monsters in an adult-free environment. The monsters look like cheap knockoffs/combinations of real world animals and monsters from other series. "You know what would be a great idea? If we made an animal that was half sheep, half dragon, that's what!"

Like Yu-Gi-Oh! and a whole slew of other children's anime programs, everything is arbitrary. I don't see any sort of theme or lesson or literary devices in the narrative, just an endless succession of sheep-dragon vs. striped dorkwad fights, broken up by the occasional appearance of those redheaded twins to say something dumb and then steal a pokeball.

Why are the animals contained in balls?

It's booooooooring. I'd rather watch the last season of Friends than sit through five minutes of dragon-sheep stats, goofy names and turn-based fighting.

And that's another thing. Turn-based? Should not this word be stricken forever from our vocabulary, and all which it describes be shunned as well? Rolling dice never got exciting when it was tranferred to a digital format.

I like:
The pokemon
The concept (Super powered creatures with the intelligence of an elementery schooler that are automatically friends with you.)
the combat (I hate turn based RPG's but pokemon mixes it up by allowing the use of elements to actually matter
consistency
music
the ability to play it anywhere

Thats as much as I can think of right now.
I love pokemon, I still find it odd that people refuse to play the new ones when they don't seem to get the concept of a sequel.

So this is fugly:

Compared to this:

(By the way, Scolipede is a hell of alot more awesome than Pinsir)

This is the problem, people claim new ones are over designed but refuse to specify which ones leading to hypocracy. The 1st generation has the same amount of ugly ones as for each other generation.

I still fail to see how pokemon are "Over Designed" EXCEPT for Emboar, that one was unneeded in design.

Like:

Pretty much everything about it. It's simple and accessable, while having TONS of hidden depth for those who wish to dive. It's cute and cartoony, but with plenty of ass-kicking designs in there to shake things up. Its a game about collecting, but you're never penalized for NOT collecting. Hell, the most recent outing, Black and White, managed to patch up one of my niggling gripes about the series, having a non-existant story. Sure, it's not Shakespear, but it's really not that bad.

Dislike:

People who say that the series hasn't changed in 15 years.

Okay, I'm cheating a bit here, but it's genuinely a bit annoying that I keep hearing this. Pokemon has evolved (pun not intended) ALOT since Red and Blue. Those of you who truely think that Pokemon is still exactly the same game, I'd like you to participate in a little experiment. Play Black/White for 5 hours or so. Then, play Red/Blue for 5 hours or so. You'll see the difference.

I like to equate Pokemon to Mario, some things stay the same, but only the things that don't need changing. "The battle system hasn't changed!" you might say. True, but changing the underlying fundamentals of Pokemon would be like making a Mario game where he can't jump. "But you're always beating 8 gyms, then an evil team, then the Pokemon League!" others might say. But just how many times has Mario stomped Bowser? "But Mario eventually went 3D!" others yell. Pokemon has added new attacks, abilities, split physical and special moves, added two new types, included held items, and added almost 500 new critters since the first games. The underlying mechanics may be the same, but the framework AROUND it has changed considerably since the old days.

So people, please stop saying that Pokemon is still the same game all these years later, it's just not true.

Decent music
I'm one of those 'mad' collector types

Dislike:
Shitty graphics - when other games of the same type have manged to pull off good stuff (DemiKids for example)
No plot worth mentioning - worse than a Bay film
No real battle improvement since the story (OMG NOW I SEE CLAW MARKS? Blow me Nindy)
Grindfest - Didn't USED to be a bad thing, but now, uck.
Crappier and crappier (looking) new pokemen.
Anime/Cartoon STILL around.
