Besides this, how often has anyone ever actually run afoul of this? I have never really seen such a situation. You only hear about them and they are usually because of one or two people who are trying to make themselves look good for whatever their political ends are, be it be the next superintendent or the next mayor. And this "war on Christmas" is almost non existent. Businesses just say "happy holidays" because it is easier than saying "merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah, and a very merry new years to you." Half the time people who think Christmas is being attacked they just don't realize the the X in Xmas comes from the greek word for messiah.

Also, OP doesn't cite a source, so this might not be political correctness at all (especially since Halloween is pretty much a secular holiday) so they could be banning "Halloween" for some silly health initiative like trying to keep candy out of school.

More like they can't accept the fact that Christmas hasn't been about Christ for quite a while. It's all about capitalism (good thing to, it's great for the economy and 'stuff' rocks). Not to mention the general annihilation of any religious symbol from public celebration. Hell, what we now know of as Christmas has so little to do with Christianity that it's pretty pointless to use the term at all...

Here in Australia we don't really get alot of that...*darts head from side to side*...mind you the PC was crazy around the time Kevin Rudd apologized (I agree that the stolen generation was a terrible thing but half of them didn't care, they then started demanding financial compensation, all for something that, despite its barbaric institution, was necessary for the indigenous population to survive in civilised Australia several generations ago). Personally I dislike it when taken to an extreme.

If you get rid of all Holidays... aren't you being prejudice to everyone except people who don't celebrate holidays? Isn't that in itself wrong too since your putting the preference of those who don't celebrate over those who do. Yet at the time celebrating anything is prejudiced against some other group that doesn't celebrate that. This comes down to a no-win situation. In the end, someone gets burned and its a matter of who you want to burn and who you want to not. Although I always thought "fall festival" was the lamest thinly veiled Halloween replacement ever.

Just because there's 2 parties in America doesn't mean that's all there is on the scale, and that that's all you could possibly be referring to when you mention the left or right wing.

Well of course the thread agrees, it's a silly instance. It is not an epidemic sweeping the nations that certain outlets would have you believe - I'm sure there's... something from the right that I would agree on, that doesn't make the thing I agree on left-wing.

There's even some rumour doing the rounds in America that Obama called a Christmas tree a Holiday tree (which some Republicans seem to be taking very seriously), despite it not even being true. The whole notion of "political correctness gone mad" is mad in itself, and taken far too seriously by people.

It's bad when Adults act so stupid and childish that as a child you are embarrassed to be of the same species. Though at that age I wouldn't have said species (I wasn't a very bright kid, which adds to the story).

I just realized, my sister's school had a "black-and-orange" day today, rather than a Halloween day. I remember one of my grade schools used to do that, but of course that was grade school, before all this politically correct stuff started cropping up. In high school, everyone wore costumes on Halloween or the day closest to it, even the teachers and the principal (he dressed up like a hooker one year...it was terrifying). Hell, even now at work, today was Halloween day. Everyone got to wear costumes, it was great. And I heard no one gripe about anything being polically incorrect at all, even in spite of all the witches, gypsies, demons, angels, and Al Bundys running around. Bah. Did anyone ever complain about this stuff before?

When I was little I learned my Aunt and Uncle didn't celebrate Christmas or Easter. I felt terrible for my cousins but left them to it, if I accidentally told them "Merry Christmas" they didn't mind, they just smiled and said it back because they knew we celebrated it. To each their own, right? What's happened to make it different?

Maybe I'll go back to my classic "Happy Generic Winter Holiday" greeting when December rolls around...

I believe the appropriate response to over-zealous PC introduced in places is to tell such people to "Go fuck yourself.", conveying both the refusal to go along with their terms and to emphasize the point with a lewd curse. Some people just need to be told the repression is BAD, and that that kind of idiocy will do more damage than good.
