Oh boy, a GOTY thread when it's only FOUR MONTHS INTO A YEAR. Hurp durp.

Also, Minecraft doesn't belong anywhere on that list. It's an alright game, but it's more of just Digital Lego than anything, lacking any structure. Sure, that's fun. But best game of the year? I think not.

Skyrim or BF3, easily my most desired this year....

But, that all depends on whether Diablo 3 and TOR come out this year...

Right now, out of all the games released in the UK thus far, I'd tip Portal 2 for the GotY. However, many more months of gaming lie ahead.

*frowns at all the 2's and 3's* *votes for Minecraft out of spite*

Like others, I'm surprised that you included some of these on your poll but not L.A. Noire.
To be honest I've never actually heard of it... I'm really surprised that's flown completely under my radar
1 - I am impressed that you follow up on comments this far into your thread. Kudos, good sir.

2 - You missed Deus Ex: Human Revolution as well.

3 - I'm really just more irritated that people are trying to ascribe how much they're GOING to love a game that they haven't played yet to the degree that they're willing to call "game of the year" on it before it's even released. Much as I have fun speculating on what the year's line-up of games is going to look like when it's done and on shelves, I just don't feel like this does anything for anybody other than increase the momentum of the hype train that we've all become rather cynical about.

4 - I change my vote to Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Well, GoTY nominations tend to be bought not earned so it's hard to say.

2011 was supposed to be a huge year for Blockbuster games, and EA in paticular has been flooding the market. It hasn't turned out that way though, and truthfully a lot of these blockbusters seem to be fizzling down to pretty run of the mill successes, if that (sales aside). "Dragon Age 2" was badly received, and despite the fanboyism I honestly do not think that "Portal 2" has had rating difficulties simply due to Day1 DLC, largely because even when it's inspire anger it hasn't lead to that kind of reaction.
Portal didn't have day 1 dlc; it had a day 1 hat shop. The only reason the score is below a 9 on metacritic is because /v/ bombed the score on day one.

Just setting the record straight.

OT: I imagine Portal 2 will be GOTY. It's probably going to be mine, anyway.
Actually that's incorrect. /v/ has been around a long time, and doesn't have that kind of power. This is a point a lot of people are missing. The only thing that is going to have a visible influance on ratings is a lot of dissatisfied customers. I understand a lot of people are in denial about this, but it's not really a point that can be argued. Yes, the rating went back up, but that could simply be a more successful attempt at damage control than what Bioware did. Any way it goes, your still dealing with a situation where the rating is less than perfect, and definatly not GoTY caliber.

It's fine by me if you like the game, and really I'm not hating on it (which a lot of people seem to think) I'm simply commenting on how so many people seem to be in denial about it, and being realistic in my "calls" on what is likely to get game of the year. I honestly do not think it's likely to be "Portal 2" even if a lot of people really like the game. But then again I don't think any of the games released so far this year have been blockbusters on the nessicary level, so it's not like I'm selectively picking on "Portal 2".

I'm HAVE to go with Skyrim. It's looking so damn good and, hell, if Oblivion can win GOTY with the shoddy game engine it was on, why the hell wouldn't Skyrim? It's TES V.5!

Like you said, this is really early to be asking, but so far, my favorite game of 2011 is undoubtedly Mortal Kombat. I honestly can not remember the last time I played something this violent... or fun.
It's also a whole lot more forgiving to me than other fighting games, including the original Mortal Kombat games. It's not so easy that it isn't a challenge, but easy enough so you're not bashing your head against your controller. One thing I've noticed is that it's a bit more balanced out than previous Mortal Kombat games. Sure, some characters are really overpowered, but as far as I see, the ones that are that way are meant to be.
I could go on about how fun it is, or how brutally amusing the fatalities and X ray moves are, but I'm going to point out one thing I really noticed: The character personalities.
I could never tell what the character's motives or personalities were in any of the MK games, save for the assumption that Scorpion was really angry all the time and that Johnny Cage was a douchebag, stuff like that. In this new Mortal Kombat, everyone seems like their own character with their own individual personalities which can be seen easily through their fighting stances and moves alone: Scorpion is the intense hate filled badass, Johnny Cage is the cocky showoff, Noob Saibot is the cold, heartless spectre, and Mileena looks like she's childishly enjoying everything too much.
Due to this, I've suddenly gained a few new favorite characters now that I can tell what they're like. I've never really cared for Kabal, but now that I can actually understand what his problem is, I like him a lot more.
Another reason this seems like it will be my game of the year is because there's not a lot of competition. I haven't gotten Portal 2 yet (shame on me), and Duke Nukem Forever comes out next month, but other than those two, there's not much I know of to compete with Mortal Kombat. There is that new Silent Hill coming out I guess, but it doesn't look very promising as of now. Maybe if they did what Mortal Kombat did (go back to it's roots and attempt to recreate what made the classics, like Silent Hill 2, so great), Silent Hill would rise again to it's former disturbing, rusty, blood stained glory.

Portal 2,simple yet obvious choice,I will say that battlefield 3 follows, but it depends after all,I remember the hype that MoH 2010 crated to find out that the single player was rubbish,in any case that was Danger close fault,so I still have some expectation for DICE.

I haven't played most of those, but Portal 2 came out, and it's more or less a statistic impossibility that any of those games will be better, so Portal 2.

Ok I know it's very early to be asking this but I was curious to what you guys/girls think... What game do you think will take the prize home for this year? Personally I'm thinking either Portal 2 or if it's released in time Minecraft. Mass Effect 3 and Uncharted 3 could potentially change my mind though.

Also making the poll I realized how many sequels are in the list... Is this good or bad for the industry?

EDIT: Sorry I forgot about Skyrim :S
look on the bright side, all of those games are completely different, some are RPG's, puzzle games, modern Military FPS's, TPS's, ECT.
