At the moment my game of the year is Portal 2, but Arkham City and Mass Effect 3 haven't come out yet so it will probably change. It's crazy how many good games are coming out this year.

TES V:Skyrim might just do it but there is a lot of good games coming out this year and while Elder Scrolls games have always done well I think Mass Effect 3 will pip it too the post just by the merit of it being the end of the Shepard story arc and a little more player friendly.

But then there is always Deus Ex..... Dammit 2011! Why so many awesome games?

Well, considering the amount of Game of the Year awards there are, I would say that ever game on the list will at some point have a shiny GOTY special edition release at some point in the next 12-15 months.

Perhaps if you narrowed down the awards presenters.

LA Noire. Well I am hoping that it turns out to be another GTA IV not another RDR (such a fucking dissapointment). In reality I would guess it will fall somewhere in the middle.

My general assumption about sequels is good for the shareholders, bad for the consumers.
You mean you want it to be like RDR rather than GTA4. You want it to be an unexpected awesome rather than a built up let down.

(I know you didn't really mean that, and that we obviously have different opinions of both games)

But I agree, LA Noire

Well, GoTY nominations tend to be bought not earned so it's hard to say.

2011 was supposed to be a huge year for Blockbuster games, and EA in paticular has been flooding the market. It hasn't turned out that way though, and truthfully a lot of these blockbusters seem to be fizzling down to pretty run of the mill successes, if that (sales aside). "Dragon Age 2" was badly received, and despite the fanboyism I honestly do not think that "Portal 2" has had rating difficulties simply due to Day1 DLC, largely because even when it's inspire anger it hasn't lead to that kind of reaction.
Portal didn't have day 1 dlc; it had a day 1 hat shop. The only reason the score is below a 9 on metacritic is because /v/ bombed the score on day one.

Just setting the record straight.

OT: I imagine Portal 2 will be GOTY. It's probably going to be mine, anyway.
Actually that's incorrect. /v/ has been around a long time, and doesn't have that kind of power. This is a point a lot of people are missing. The only thing that is going to have a visible influance on ratings is a lot of dissatisfied customers. I understand a lot of people are in denial about this, but it's not really a point that can be argued. Yes, the rating went back up, but that could simply be a more successful attempt at damage control than what Bioware did. Any way it goes, your still dealing with a situation where the rating is less than perfect, and definatly not GoTY caliber.

It's fine by me if you like the game, and really I'm not hating on it (which a lot of people seem to think) I'm simply commenting on how so many people seem to be in denial about it, and being realistic in my "calls" on what is likely to get game of the year. I honestly do not think it's likely to be "Portal 2" even if a lot of people really like the game. But then again I don't think any of the games released so far this year have been blockbusters on the nessicary level, so it's not like I'm selectively picking on "Portal 2".
Including cosmetic hats is not grounds for dismissal as a GOTY contender. The only reason P2 has such low ratings on metacritic is because people freaked out over hats. That do nothing. That aren't necessary to enjoy the game. I'm not sure how I'm in denial about anything because I don't see a cosmetic hat shop as the end of the world. Pardon me for taking, "lol portal 2 too short = 0 / 10" "OHEMGEE DAY 1 "DLC" 0 / 10" reviews with a grain of salt. Which is what almost every negative review on metacritc was, last I checked.

Also, Portal 2 doesn't have much competition this year, IMO. I mean, Oblivion was fun, but the quality is a lot lower than Portal 1 and or 2. I doubt Skyrim will be much of a leap forward in quality, if Fallout is any indication. Mass Effect 3? People hate large numbers.

From that list, I'm hoping Mass Effect 3. Pre-emptively, my vote goes to ME3, Arkham City or Skyrim

Mass Effect 3 will probably be it for me.

Unless Human Revolution manages to be as good as, if not better, than the original Deus Ex.

If I were betting I'd pick Skyrim as well. It looks great and they've apparently listened to the negative comments about Oblivion based on some of the articles and interviews that I've read.

If I were wishing rather than betting, I'd choose Mass Effect 3. I hope it combines the quality of story of ME1 and the gameplay of ME2 and make them both even better for ME3, which would make me really happy. I'm sorry, ME2 is a good game but it's really just a short story waiting for you to collect shipmates and make those shipmates happy before the final battle.

It's going to be out of:

Uncharted 3
Mass Effect 3
Skyrim
Portal 2

I think though that by the end of the year, Portal 2 will have been out for too long, it'll have lost it's magic on reviewers and while I whole-heartedly believe it deserves it, I do think that Skyrim will take GOTY.

Uncharted 3 stands a chance if it has a damn good plot, but I think too many reviewers are of the childish opinion that hating Nathan Drake is cool even though he and his wisecracks are one of the major selling points of the game. That and the fantastically paced plots, amazing scenery and use of the PS3's hardware.

Mass Effect 3 will probably be a bit shorter than people are happy with, resulting in backlash and 9/10 reviews and this on top of Skyrim's release will pretty much take away any chance it has of being GOTY, no matter how amazing the game may actually be.

So yeah, I think Skyrim has it in the bag as long as it's enjoyable and without too many noticeable glitches and issues on release.

How are we supposed to judge games that haven't been released yet?

Anyway, so far I would say Portal 2.
It's like predicting which team would win a sports match, since most of these are sequels except for Minecraft which is a WIP and hasn't been finished yet, we already have knowledge of how they performed in the past so like a sports match we can guess how they'll do this time around. You can't of course say for sure but you can place your bets.

Ocarina of Time is clearly good enough to win GOTY twice, one in each decade, heck in 15 year it will probably win it again in the third remake

Portal 2, mainly because as awesome as Minecraft is, its not actually a game yet
